Osama Bin Laden is dead!

Osama Bin Laden is confirmed dead, killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan.

I believe we have his body too. President Obama will be going on national television to deliver a speech addressing the issue soon.

10 years after 9/11 when over 3,000 people died, and countless more lives lost in the "War on Terror."

No matter how you feel about this news, there is no denying the fact that Osama Bin Laden's actions (and the actions of those who follow him) have greatly impacted the way we live in this world.

Good news, if perhaps only symbolic.
Has he had any real power or influence lately? How many wild-eyed madmen will rush to martyr themselves in order to avenge his death?
Let us all pray that his seventy-two virgins are all dismembered and eviscerated victims of his outrages.

Why Bin Laden's Death No Longer Really Matters
But where killing or capturing Bin Laden might once have been imagined to be a decisive turning point in a struggle between the U.S. and its challengers in the Muslim world, today, the death of America's erstwhile nemesis is little more than an historical footnote -- a settling of accounts for a spree of ugly crimes and the elimination of a symbol of global jihadist nihilism, perhaps, offering justice and closure for the victims of 9/11 and other atrocities. But it does little to alter the challenges facing the U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan or any other major country in the Muslim world. That's because much to his chagrin, Bin Laden and his movement have achieved only marginal relevance to power struggles throughout the Muslim world.

I figure this needs quoting in this topic, although my definition of self-defense is probably slightly more liberal and inclusive than PZ's.

I'm an extremist in this debate, I will freely confess. I hold an absolute view that no killing is ever justified, that individuals have the necessity to defend themselves against assailants, but that even that does not grant moral approval to snuffing out the life of another. Don't even try to pull out a scale and toss a copy of the Koran on one side and the life of a single human being on the other — the comparison is obscene. Do not try to tell me that some people are 'moderates' when they tolerate or even support and applaud war and death and murder for any cause, whether it is oil, or getting even, or defending the honor of wood pulp and ink.

No, Hitler was the disease itself. Without him, I seriously doubt that National Socialism would have taken its course and taken over the way it did. Bin Laden was one wacked out terrorist among many. He wasn't the first and he won't be the last.

That's oversimplification on a grand scale. Enough to be a tad misleading. But you have a point, sort of. Hitler wasn't the symptom of a disease, but a manifestation of it. Subtle difference. OBL too. The real difference between the two is that the former disease, the Nazi party, needed a figurehead of a certain quality at its central core in order to survive. Whereas Al Qaeda doesn't.

It's kind of hard to imagine a Nazi party without Hitler. He wasn't merely a figurehead, he was its life force. Let's say Hitler had been killed in 1928 or so. Counterfactuals are dangerous, but honestly I don't see Germany taking the same course. It's easy to imagine radical terrorists without an Osama, since they existed before he came on the scene.

I don't give a damn about American claims.
One thing I know for sure. Two things, I should say.
One - No action will prevent the terrorist Bin Laden from entering to History as the master chief of the most audacious attack in mankind history. His attack is already a mandatory study at any military academy in the world. Unlike any American action.
Two - Reality is far way from what appears to be. I wonder what happens if another terrorist message appears with Bin Laden reading the news about his own death and, as an erudite person, saying: "The news of my death were somehow exaggerated..."

So you are implying that 1) American military actions are not studied in military academies worldwide because they choose to focus on terrorist activities instead (because planning and executing sneak attacks on civilian populations with proper funding and support is hard?) and 2) That Osama Bin Laden is watching this news on T.V from his hotel room in Bora Bora. right
