Browser comparison page

[url]http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/compare/

I'll be blunt - this page is not convincing at all. That "browser 1" and "browser 2" thing is laughable. As a person familiar with browsers, I can tell that they refer to IE and Firefox, but how would the regular person see it? For all they know, you could be comparing Opera to some outdated browser (which isn't the case for at least Firefox).

So the only changes you propose to make the comparison more convincing is explicitly mentioning the competition?

Are you aware that in several countries it is illegal to mention competing products by name in your promotional material?

A third-party browser comparison site can very well name the browsers by virtue of being unaffiliated with any of the products being discussed. However Opera's own such pages are probably not allowed to, legally.

Did not know that....doesn't apply to anything I do but I find it interesting none the less.

I don't now the legal situation in Norway but in the EU it's perfectly legal (because of a EU directive explicitly allowing comparative advertising). But it's not really common over here. At least not in this corner of Europe.
People tend to feel that such advertising is somewhat rude - even a bit patronizing. You always risk to ruin your own reputation, when making use of comparative advertising.

Whether legal or not, that comparison page sucks. After the fuss the Opera community kicked up when the Mozilla foundation published their Firebird comparison, for Opera to do the same is unhelpful; comparisons are subjective, skewed and next to useless propaganda...

Luckily, they've removed that page for now...
