LE CHAT DE LA VEILLE FEMME

Je vis un jour, sous une porte cochère, une bonne femme qu’entourait un cercle de badauds. Elle était assise par terre contre la muraille; elle avait sur ses genoux le corps pantelant d’un chat et elle sanglotait.

On me raconta le drame. Le matou était tombé du troisième étage, sain et sauf, parait-il, mais un peu étourdi de la culbute; un mauvais gamin en avait profité pour le saisir et le jeter sous les rous d’une voiture qui passait.

La bonne femme pleurait toujours, autour d’elle, les uns riaient, les autres essayait de la consoler; enfin levant vers un des assistants sa figure ridée, toute ruisselante de larmes:

“Je sais bien que ce n’était qu’un chat, dit-elle, mais c’était ma petite-fille qui l’avait élevé; elle est morte aussi: à qui pourrai-je désormais parler d’elle?”

THE CAT OF THE OLD WOMAN

One day, I saw an old woman who was being surrounded by a circle of onlookers. She was sitting on the ground, against the wall and on her knees, there was a corp of a dying cat and she was sobbing.

I was told the drama. The cat falled out from the third floor, but it had still been being strong and safe, it just seemed to be shocked a little. But a bad streetboy came, he took the cat as a toy and threw it on the road where there was a car passed on it.

The old woman was always crying, people around her, who laughed, who tried to console. Finally, she raised her wrinkled face toward one of them, spoke with the whining voice and tears trickled down:

“I know that he’s just a cat but that was my daughter who brought him up and
she was died too. From now on, who can I talk about her with?”

IL GATTO DELLA VECCHIA DONNA

Io vedo un giorno, sotto una portaguarda, c’era una buona donna, circondava un circlo di indagatori. Singhiozzava, siedeva per terra, contro al muro, aveva un gatto morente sui ginocchi.

Mi ha racontato il dramma. Il gatto è caduto dal terzo piano, ma era stato forte e al sicuro, si sembrava solo di essere scioccato un po’. Pero un cattivo ragazzino era arrivato, l‘aveva preso e l’era butato sulla strada di una macchina che passava.

La buona donna piangeva sempre, la gente intorno a lei, chi rideva, chi proveva a consolarla. Finalmente, si era alzato verso a uno di loro sa figura rugosa, tutto scorrente di lacrime:

“Io so che era solo un gatto, ma mia figlia l’aveva allevato e lei è morta pure. D’ora in poi, potrò parlare di lei con chi?”

CON MÈO CỦA BÀ LÃO GIÀ

Một lần tôi trông thấy một bà lão tốt bụng ngồi dưới một cánh cổng, bao quanh là một đám đông những kẻ hiếu kì. Bà cụ ngồi bệt dưới đất, lưng dựa vào tường, thổn thức khóc. Trên đầu gối bà cụ là một con mèo đang nằm thoi thóp.

Nguời ta kể cho tôi nghe câu chuyện của bà lão. Con mèo đực của bà tuy rơi từ trên tầng ba xuống, song vẫn khoẻ mạnh và lành lặn, nó chỉ hơi choáng do bị ngã lộn nhào, nhưng một thằng bé du đãng xuất hiện đã tóm lấy nó để nghịch và quẳng nó xuống đường đúng lúc có một chiếc xe ô tô đi ngang qua.

Bà lão khóc cả ngày, xung quanh bà, kẻ cười, người cố gắng an ủi. Cuối cùng, bà lão mếu máo ngước gương mặt nhăn nheo của mình về một trong số họ, nước mắt đầm đìa:

“Tôi biết rằng nó chỉ là một con mèo thôi, nhưng con gái tôi đã nuôi nó lớn, con bé cũng đã bỏ tôi mà đi trước rồi: Từ giờ trở đi tôi biết kể chuyện về con bé với ai bây giờ?”
