Moving In The Right Direction

Difference of Opinion

, , , , ,

I was home yesterday because the Christian school/child care center that I work for was closed due to snow and icy rain. When I am home I listen to talk radio as I do at work. A family member asked who is that talking on the radio. It was Rush Limbo. I do listen to him for no more than forty minutes to an hour. I can not take him anymore than that. I did agree with what he was talking about during the time I was listening to him. The family member did not. Mr. Limbo was giving his views on the cost of taxation for entitlements with emphasis on welfare. The family member felt we should have welfare to help those in need. The family member went in to a short history of rising taxation as it affected a deceased relative. I told her welfare was a good portion of that rising taxation. I also told her about the time Walter Williams was subbing for Mr. Limbo and he talked about entitlements as thievery. My family member thought that was outrageous. She expressed that the Bible tells us to take care of the poor. Which is correct, but I told her the Bible does not tell the government to take care of the poor. It tells us as individuals to do that. It can be done through charity and/or through our local churches.

I leave with a few (from several) Bible verses dealing with helping the poor. Please note that they speak to individuals and not to government (Caesar).

Prov. 21:13
"He who shuts his ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in his own
time of need."
[/blockquote]Prov. 22:9
"He who has a generous eye will be blessed, For he gives of his bread to the
poor."
[/blockquote]I Timothy 6:17-19
"Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust
in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all in uncertain
riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them
do riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let
them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share,
storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may
lay hold on eternal life."
[/blockquote]
