The Vacation Bible School Ministry

, , , ...

I just completed a week of Vacation Bible School at my church. For the first time in recent years, I was home in time to be able to attend. VBS at my church is usually from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm for 1 week in July. Some churches have it in the morning form 9 to 12. Most churches whether they have it in the morning or evening will do it from 1 week to a month.

The ministry of VBS is one of the greatest opportunities Christians have for reaching those living in the surrounding church neighborhoods. Children generally are the primary targets, but many churches include a class for adults. It continues to be one of the most productive special events in terms of both finding and leading people to the Lord Jesus Christ. I have seen entire families come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior through VBS. Check out the VBS at your church or at a church in your neighborhood.

I read last year that some churches are no longer having VBS due to unavailability of teachers. I also think it is due to the ever growing cost of materials per pupil. At my former church in Philly, I was an assistant/co-director for many years of a two week program. I understand about the cost of VBS curriculum materials. Church budgets for VBS stay the same or even get smaller as the price for the material packets increase. We did have to charge a one time fee of $ 5.00 per family for children that used our van transportation. I have experienced by this time, parents jump at the opportunity to send their children somewhere secure and beneficial in the evenings, whether it is in the city like Philly or a suburban borough like Lansdale.

Some of the cost cutting measures taken by churches are its church members creating the theme and materials for the bible classes and crafts instead of buying the costly packets per pupil. One creative edible craft that was done at my church for the early elementary grades was a partially hollowed out cupcake, a round cookie, chocolate and peanut butter icing and colored coconut shavings assembled to create an empty tomb which signified the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.

Finally, because I was able to be at VBS this year, my Sunday school teacher asked me to assist in the class of early elementary children which numbered 16. The teacher became very sick. So from Wednesday on, I was teaching the class. Go here to my post last year on this subject to get to the link about VBS decline/importance. A Watchful Eye on Children's Internet Travels

, , , ...

A close eye is kept on my 13 year old twin nieces and my younger niece (who is with us on weekends) in their web surfing by myself and my sister (twins’ mother). My nieces know that I can get into the computer and find out what web sites they have visited. The twins love virtual game sites. One of my twin nieces found a virtual site that had her being a surgeon operating on a knee cap. They are into the virtual creations of Sims2. My sister allowed them to have certain Sims2 computer games, because not all of them are suitable for 13 year olds.

My younger niece loves to do what the twins do. She likes creating neighborhoods and households in the Sims2 virtual realities. But she is also still into websites such as Barbie, cartoon network and Disney. All my nieces have school friends that tell them about a newly discovered website to tryout. There is one I found out about and I am watching them to make sure they do not get on it.

It is called Ms Bimbo Website. It is an Internet game for girls ages 9 to 16. Ms Bimbo attracted 200,000 members in Britain. Young girls can get bimbo dollars to buy lingerie, nightclub outfits, diet pills and facelifts. Read more about it here. This is outrageous. Keep a close watch on your children’s Internet use.

Christmas Doings at Work

, , , ...

If you do not know, I work in a childcare center on the management side. This center along with the elementary school and middle school are under the direction of a Christian church in North Philly. This is a very exciting time of the year. This week the childcare has had a Christ centered Christmas program with recitations and songs from the preschool age children. They also received early Christmas gifts from Church. We did not give these gifts through a fake Santa. Nap time was a bit difficult for the children that day. They were so excited that they could not settle down.

The childcare and school staff had a Christmas party last week. The childcare staff is having a potluck Christmas luncheon today. And this evening the elementary and middle school will present their Christ centered Christmas program at the church. After that, the center and the school will be closed until December 26th. The 3 days next week will hopefully have a shrunken attendance of child care children, and school children of working parents who are in paid after care.

August Sunday Messages on the Family

, , , ...

My pastor is on vacation as are most senior church pastors. At many churches, the Sundays in the month of August are filled with guest preachers and/or the church’s assistant or associates pastors bringing the message. Many folks like me visit other churches. From a recent post, you know that I am responsible for getting my twin nieces to our church’s 101 class (new member’s class) which is continuing this month. In the past that class went on hiatus during this month.

For August at my church, a member who is a former church pastor and presently a missionary director at Crossworld Missions is bringing a series of messages on the family. Last week, he talked about there being 3 in a Christian marriage. You all know there is a husband and a wife, but you may be wondering who is the third person? The answer of course is Jesus Christ. One interesting tidbit is that he revealed that when he and his wife (married 37 years) were courting, they prayed before they went out on their dates. How many of you married Christians reading this post prayed like that while you and your spouse were dating?

Today the message was on raising children to obey God. There was a powerful video clip at the beginning of the message. It was about a mother putting “her foot down” to her teen age daughter’s lying, as her younger daughter observed while waiting to tell the mother something. When the mother was finished with the older daughter, the younger daughter told her that grandma was on the phone. The mother told the younger daughter to tell grandma that she was not there. There was an audible reaction from the church audience to the video clip. What kind of an example was that mother being in front of her daughters?

The biblical scriptures were from Genesis 6 and Hebrews 11:7. The example of Noah was emphasized. Noah obeyed God, and when he told his sons to join him on the ark because God said so, they did not question their father; they obeyed. Statistics for families where given. If both father and mother are examples of obedience to the Lord, 75% of children from that kind of a family will grow up to continually follow the Lord. If it is only the father, 55% will continue to follow the Lord. If it is only the mother, than it is down to 15% that will continue in adulthood to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. The adult example of Noah for the home, in children’s ministry, and on a child related job is paramount.

By the way the church in the photo is my church.

Do You Need Him That Bad?

, , , ...

What is it with single mothers who need to have a man in their lives so bad that they will settle for any despicable low life degenerate? Is it the intimate companionship thing, or is it the need for added financial support? It is probably both. They eagerly bring these horrible men into their lives at the expense of their children. I have just read a news item about a 3 year old little girl being horribly disfigured by her mother’s boyfriend. The damages to this child could not be fully repaired. The photo is of the boyfriend and the mother being arraigned. They were ordered to be held without bail. If you can stomach it, you can read all about it here.

There have been so many news stories reported about children being injured or killed by the mother’s boyfriend or new husband. The boyfriend in this disfigurement pleaded not guilty. I sure would like to know how he and the mother are explaining the child’s mutilating injuries. There is no way that was an accident.

Single mothers be very careful of who you bring into your children’s lives

Ministry of Vacation Bible School

, , , ...

Churches offering Vacation Bible Schools are declining. There has been about a 15% drop. The main reason given is the lack of teachers. VBS is still offered at Southern Baptists, mainline congregations, churches with large adult populations, and black congregations. This summer outreach ministry could be offered from a week to a month. It could be offered during the day or in the evening. You can read it here.

VBS has always been considered a very important outreach at the churches I have attended. I was the assistant director of VBS at my former church for many years. The parents in the church neighborhood sent their children to the two week mid July Bible School, which was held in the evening from 6-8:30 PM. The children were taught bible lessons and music, made crafts, and given snacks. Most of these children came from families that did not attend church. Usually by that time in July, parents love the idea of sending their children somewhere safe and constructive for a few hours in the evening. Some children made decisions to accept Christ as Savior. This attracted their parents to attend church. We had several families over the years attend the church as a result of VBS. While in church attendance, the parents came to see their need for Jesus Christ to save them from their sins. Thus you can see why VBS is an important ministry.

I can identify with the lack of teachers reason, because currently I cannot participate in my current church’s VBS due to my job. My work day ends when my church’s VBS begins at 6:00 PM; and that is if all the children at the center are picked up on time. Check out the VBS at your church or one in your neighborhood if you are not working into the evening. Most Vacation Bible Schools do have an adult class too.

Christian Release Time

, , ,

I just returned from the Saturday portion of my church’s mission conference. One female missionary who ministers to Philadelphia children whose families do not go to church, spoke about “Christian release time”. This is when children (with parental consent) are allowed to leave the school for a designated time during the day for Bible activities. This gets a hearty welcome from teachers in the schools that she encounters. The teachers love any assistance in getting children to improve on their behavior.

Behavior problems run rampant in the Philadelphia public schools. Well if you have been reading this blog, you already know about the two Philly high school youths (one was an academic achiever) that scuffled with a teacher over a confiscated iPod which resulted in a broken neck for the teacher. With all the efforts to keep the Lord out of public schools, when there are serious behavior problems He is welcomed with open arms.

It is no secret that the majority of Philadelphia public school students are Black. I have said that Blacks have strayed away from the Lord, and it is evidenced in our families, but the Lord is at work answering prayer. Who would have ever thought during a time when schools are being protested and sued over the mere mention of God in a class or at a school ceremony that “Christian release time” is strongly welcomed! These children are learning about Jesus as He influences their lives and those around them (parents, classmates) for His pleasure and to do His good will. The Lord is working

There is a song that says it right and starts of with:

Jesus is the answer for the world today

Awful Temper

, , ,

Alec Baldwin just screwed up big time. I had Fox and Friends on my TV, and they have been playing his very nasty cell phone message tirade to his 11(or 12) year old daughter all throughout the 3 hour program. I listen to it at Yahoo. It is all over the world. If he wanted an increased roll in custody of his daughter, or even more parental visits, he blew it big time. Telling his daughter he did not care how old she was, or that she was just a child, and calling the mother and his precious daughter despicable names is going to have a great impression on the judge.

Kim Basinger, his daughter’s mother and his ex-wife has some blame to share in this tirade also. It is reported that she is in violation to the agreement of visitation and phone calls where Mr. Baldwin is concerned. It appears that she keeps her daughter from being available on the court scheduled dates. She has to be feeling awful right now. Maybe Ms Basinger wanted him to get upset to prove to the judge how wacked out Mr. Baldwin can get by playing his angry voicemails, but I sure she did not want the voice-mail availability of any of the voicemails to the entire world.

Mr. Baldwin has to feel awful, because there is no way he can excuse or explain this away. He is trying somewhat by putting the blame on those involved in making it available to the media. Mr. Baldwin should take blame for his awful temper. For damage control, he could get himself some counseling. His daughter probably does not want to be anywhere near him right now. I hope they can resolve their problems, because that is her one and only father. Again I am so thankful for the father and mother I was given.

Right now Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger and their daughter have loss big time.
