The Outcome of the Spotlighted Races

, , , ...

The election outcomes of the 2 gubernatorial races and the one congressional race in upstate New York take center stage today. The conservative Republican party leadership is very happy with the gubernatorial victories in Virgnia and New Jersey. National Democrat leaders are saying the elections were local and do not speak to the Obama administration/policies.

Even though third party conservative candidate Doug Hoffman lost his congressional bid, conservative Republicans feel they have served notice on moderate rhino styled Republicans. Mr. Hoffman's second place showing was within respectable range for a third party candidate. Personally I am trying to go with the conservative Republicans' take on the outcome of this particular race, but it is a little hard.

Political third parties usually get in the way and Mr. Hoffman's lost gave the Democrats their first victory since the Civil War for that 23rd congressional district. Democrats love this Republican infighting that results in a victory for the Donkey Party. I feel the true blame goes to the local Republican leaders that gave the candidacy to extreme moderate i.e. downright leftist Deidre Scozzafava who eventually dropped out and threw her support to the Democrat victor Bill Owens. What were those Republican leader folks thinking?

The Bob McDonnell gubernatorial victory in Virginia was a given. He had a double digit lead in the polls. The voters returned Virginia back into the hands of the Republicans with Mr. McDonnell and voting in Republicans for other state offices. In New Jersey, it was continually being reported that Gov. Jon Corzine and Chris Christie were at a dead heat.

Pres. Obama coming in to campaign in the final days was reported to have helped Gov. Corzine according to polls a day before the election. That did not happen. Democrats say that Mr. Christie's victory over Gov. Corzine has no bearing on Pres. Obama and Democrat leadership. But Pres. Obama went to Jersey to stump for the Gov. Look what happened! It looks like his campaigning gave Chris Christie the bump he needed to get elected New Jersey's next governor.

The gubernatorial wins give Republicans increased hope for 2010 and give strong indication that they are not a dead party as many in my neck of the woods believe.
