Ed Shultz who has an early prime time program on MSNBC is one of the very few on the liberal left side that has a successful talk radio program. He got into it with Ernest Istook who is now with the Heritage foundation over employers in relation to the health care bill. In this radio face off, Mr. Shultz responded in the way that has become practically the signature of the liberal left. He responded by denying the claims made to him without any evidence for back up. He had no facts and kept telling Mr. Istook he was wrong. Mr. Istook responded with facts which made Mr. Shultz look like he had been devoid of intelligence. See the transcript and get the audio of that talk radio program segment here.
As a critic from the loyal opposition, the only talk radio program on the liberal left side that has my ear on a regular basis is the local Philly urban talk radio station in the morning. Once and a while, I also try to catch Independent Lew Dobbs and Libertarian Neal Boortz who I have warmed up to a little bit. I listen mostly to right wing conservatives. But I listen less these days to the big conservative talkers like Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham and Sean Hannity. I listen mostly to conservative right wing talkers who have Internet based radio programs such as Rod Eccles, Willie Lawson, Kevin Jackson and Mad Irishman, Sheridan Folger. I also listen to local based talkers that can be heard through streaming like James T. Harris of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I am now trying to listen to a local based conservative talker Lisa Fritsch out of Austin, Texas when I can get a chance. I first learned about her when she appeared on Glenn Becks's TV program about black conservatives. Ms. Fritsch is on 10:00 a.m. central (for me thats 11:00 a.m.) Monday through Friday for only an hour. From what I have heard so far, she definitely deserves another hour of talk time. I am really enjoying my personal discoveries of conservative radio talkers.
Who likes the late afternoon and evening programs on MSNBC? The cable channel sees itself as the antithesis of Fox News. Of course Fox beats MSNBC unmercifully in the ratings. It appears that this primarily leftwing network may be hiring Ed Shultz who is considered to be the most successful liberal talker among rightwing dominated talk radio. Even in his success, Mr. Schultz is nowhere near Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or even Michael Savage in listeners.
As liberal as Philly is, one would think Ed Shultz would do well in the Philly radio market, but the city is dominated by talkers on the right side. I have never heard his radio program, but have seen him doing punditry on the cable news networks. MSNBC think they may have liberal gold mine in Schultz, but he will probably be more of the same or worse. Beside's left-wingers do not watch cable new and listen to talk radio like right-wingers. Read more about this from Brent Bozell and also read about how Rush Limbaugh's already high ratings are soaring into the stratosphere as a result of the White House attacks here.
WTNP is billed as intelligent conservative talk radio. The programming is aimed to be an alternative to the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, since there are conservatives who do not care for their approach and delivery and prefer to hear conservatism dispatched from such folks as Bill Bennett and Hugh Hewitt. I include conservative talkers of opposing dispositions to my listening when possible. I personally like Bill Bennett.
Here is an interview Bill Bennett did with Rep. Michelle Bachman, R-MN on the Economic Recovery and Middle Class Tax Relief Act of 2009. It is about 13 minutes. Rep Bachman is excellent. She confirms my belief that the so-called congressional bipartisanship is really Democraticship.
It is open season on Rush Limbaugh. The knives are out. The attack on Right wing radio is in full swing. The Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee has an online petition out against Rush for expressing hope of failure for Pres. Obama's socialistic policies. I have to listen to his radio program somehow today. I am quite sure he is reveling in all of this attention.
The Democrats are helping to prove that Rush is worth even more than his 400 million dollar contract.
I have been hearing and reading many pros and cons on the 14 billion auto bailout bill from conservative thinking people on TV, local and national radio talk show hosts and talk show callers, bloggers and blog commenters. Almost half were for the bailout. Can this country survive economically sticking to fiscal conservative principles? I know that at least since the times of the Franklin Roosevelt presidency, this has been a capitalist country with some socialism mixed in. But these socialistic government bailouts of big business failures could not possibly be the answer to our economic problems.
I am hearing all kinds of fatalist ending scenerios from pro bailout people due to the final vote in the Senate going against the bailout bill after the House passed it. Go here to see how the final vote went down.
I have been posting comments on the blog of the morning radio personality at the Philly urban talk show on a average of twice a week. This week I posted one comment and will be posting another to a new blog entry. The comment I posted earlier this week was to a blog post on "Rev. Jeremiah Wright's Comments Making the News Again." I addressed the blogger's "That what Elizabeth Hasselbeck's gets" attitude to Rev Wright's dumb or dizzy broad remark.
Rev Wright is highly revered among the listening audience, especially with the morning radio host and those who are active on his site's chatboard. Rev Wrights's half hour program of sermon/messages are carried on this radio station early week day mornings. I also took issue with Rev Wright's Black theological stand and his GD America remark.
Guess what? It appears my post was not approved. It has not appeared on that blog. I will be emailing the host as to what happen to my comment.
Listen to Ken Blackwell a former Secretary of State in Ohio and currently Vice Chairman of the Republican National Committee's Platform Committee being interviewed by radio talk show host Laura Ingraham (who was dumped in Philly for Mike Gallagher) a couple of weeks ago dealing with voter fraud, ACORN and more.
Read more from Mr. Blackwell’s columns on possible voter fraud here. Something tells me if Sen. Obama comes up the winner, Sen. McCain will challenge it big time. I think Radio talker Joe Madison was right when he said to the effect on Lou Dobbs that we will not have an officially declared presidential winner for weeks. Hey, it may take longer than it did in 2000.
Note: I do not think all homeless folks should be disqualified from voting. If they are in a homeless shelter, they have residency. In childcare through the years, there were children at the centers I worked in who lived in shelters. Their mothers or fathers had just secured minimum wage jobs and were trying to get back on their feet.
Even in liberal Philly with three talk radio programs, two are strongly pro right-wing conservative with mostly syndicated hosts such as Bill Bennett, Mike Gallagher (Laura Ingraham dumped for him), Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and even (delayed) late night/early morning Bill O’Reilly and Michael Savage. One of the stations also includes a few local talkers who also mostly right-wing.
Now I do have to stop here and say that Michael Smerconish, who is a MSNBC pundit and a local early morning talker in Philly on one of the two right-wing stations, has just astounded his local listeners with his endorsement of Sen. Obama. Mr. Smerconish was very pro Bush in 2004. He could not take John Kerry seriously. Of course, Mr. Smerconish is catching you know what for his Obama endorsement.
The third station is an urban radio talker, which does not do that well in the Philly area radio ratings. The urban stations whether music or talk hardly ever do, except for one FM music station. The urban talk radio hosts mostly agree with left-wing ideals and are pro Obama. One of the hosts has a blog and his posts are for Sen. Obama and against Sen. McCain and Republicans in general. Putting it mildly, he strongly dislikes Gov. Palin. The talk show host/blogger loves Keith Olbermann and the rest of the folks at MSNBC.
Now the congressional Democrats are looking to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, which will have a profound change in talk radio. The Dems want to diminish the success of conservative talkers. All talk radio stations would have to provide balance in their programming. One of the stations in Philly has a liberal left-wing talker for 2 hours in the evening during the week. If the Fairness Doctrine is successfully brought back, the evening liberal left-winger will not be enough of a balance. They will have to get rid of Limbaugh or Hannity and maybe Smerconish or Beck to be replaced with liberal left-wing biased talkers.
The urban talker who only has right-wingers on the early morning program every other Monday, would really have to replace several of its programs to give a proper balance. People already of the general listening audience that also communicate in the chatroom go off the deep end when urban conservative or moderate right-wing folks get their chance to talk every other Monday.
This post was about radio, but the likes of cable’s Fox News and MSNBC and other TV newsers would also have to change.
