Unsafe School

The Stetson Middle School in Philadelphia is managed by Edison School Inc. which manages public school and charter schools in school districts around the United States. Stetson is a public neighborhood school that has had one of the worst reputations in the city. Edison took over the school to eradicate the bad rep and turn it into a school of excellence. An 11 year old male student was raped by another male student in Stetson. The parents of the 11 years old are suing. Edison says they are not responsible for the safety of the children. That does not sound right to me. How about you? Read all about it here and see the Edison Inc. website here.
The BET Awards

I watched the BET Awards (Black Entertainment Television) with some in between channel switching to Fox News. I have finally become like my mother. I hardly knew any of the performers. Just about all of the so called music was awful. Lyrics had to be bleeped out. On one song was bleeped almost every other word. The males dressed in defiance to the Bill Cosby like critics and wore those low saggy baggy pants.

I did enjoy 3 Moments of the awards. The first was when Dr. Marvin Sapp sang his gospel hit, Never Could Have Made It. D.L. Hughley obvious did not have a clue about Dr. Sapp, because he introduced him as Warren Sapp. He did apologize and begged Dr. Sapp’s forgiveness.

The second enjoyable moment for me was a tribute to Al Green. I always loved Let’s Stay Together. Listening to good singers like Jill Scott sing his old hits, brought me back to the early 70s when I was in college completing final projects and papers. During my sophomore year, I remember being up all night at the semester's end, typing on my portable manual typewriter. There were no computers back then (who remembers that way of completing a college paper?). The Washington D. C. radio station I listened to that night and morning played Al Green over and over again.

The third was the tribute to Quincy Jones. His music career has been so versatile. It was not, but should have been noted that he was the producer behind Leslie Gore’s first hit, It’s My Party back around 1963. There were hardly if any black producers of white singer's recordings back then. Mr. Jones has worked with a variety of music artist. Of course they highlighted his work with Michael Jackson’s early 1980’s Thriller. I love it when the BET Awards pay tribute to musical artists that have been around for a while. That is when I will hear favorite old songs. I wish there were more John Legends and Jill Scott's performances. For the most part, this awards show is too hip hop and rap ridden.

Update

Late last week, I did a blog post on the CBS3 Mess in Philadelphia. I indicated that it did not look good for news anchor, Larry Mendte. I was right. He was dismissed from his $700.000.00 a year anchor position. The dismissal was based on the television station’s internal investigation. The FBI have not completed their investigation of allegedly hacking into his former (dismissed last January) co-anchor’s computer account and reading her yahoo emails; thus, he has not been legally charged.

It is alleged that Mr. Mendte leaked personal information from the emails to the media. When his co-anchor, Alycia Lane was gone, he worked solo, which appears to be what he wanted all along, but as I have always heard, “God don’t like ugly”. He does not let ugly behavior go unpunished. Mr. Mendte alleged actions have caused him to lose big time. Ah co-workers! I hope you are not working with someone who is sneaking around doing things to bring you down. I hope you are not the co-worker who is doing sneaky despicable things to bring someone else down. Stop. Do not ignore what happened to Larry Mendte.
