Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (RC, 64-bit)

, , , ...

I just installed Windows 7 to my desktop at home. The first thing I did was download Opera 10, followed by Songbird. The default background is of a fish which is not too dissimilar to Maria Hammond's guppy.

The installation was soooo easy, and really quite painless. The operating system seems good so far - and fast. Let's see how it goes. Hopefully I can get Adobe Photoshop working in this far better than it was in Ubuntu - and then I can get on with making Luke Leighfield and Mike TV a website each.

Oh, and I've started using Ask UK again. All this talk of Microsoft's Bing made me want to try something different. Like I said, time for a change.

Halo 3 (Xbox 360)

, , , ...

Phwoar! I bought Halo 3 and have been playing it the past few days. It's good, really good. There's one feature that I love in particular; you can watch back your gameplay and save off HD-resolution screenshots of the game (the picture below is one of my in-game shots). It gives you a chance to see how the game really works; how the AI reacts to certain situations, what your team mates on the other side of the battlefield are doing and to watch those all-important kills that you score.

You can view my album, watch in MyOpera or subscribe via RSS to see all my latest screenshots.

Right now, I'm off to play some more Halo 3. Zing!

New Clothes & Redmond Calling.

, , , ...

Just a quick update today because I thought I'd share the products of today's shopping extravaganza with you - as an extension of a 'Woo! I have a job' celebration.

But, before I do, I thought I'd tell you of how I was quite happily sat there last night; toying away with my new Windows Mobile when I got a phone call... from Microsoft HQ in the USA. The next 15 minutes were spent talking to a pleasent fellow called Mel Sampat, who is the Program Manager for Windows Mobile.

The call came because I'd emailed Microsoft with some feedback on the product. It was good to hear in such a large company there is someone who reads all the emails, and is willing to get back to you to help solve problems or discuss feedback.

Anyway, onto clothes. In picture format:

Red & Dark Red Tee from Freespirit Camouflage Jacket from Freespirit del mar Goods tee from Republic Skull Hoodie from Republic Dungarees from Topman Dungarees from Topman

Most of all, I love the dungarees. I have always looked at dungarees and been tempted by them with the thought that they'd actually suit me - but never had the guts to try them on, let alone buy them. It just had to be done!

Let me know what you think of the clothes, and (like Microsoft) would most appreciate your feedback.

9 Days

, , , ...

Nine is the number of days it's been since I updated this blog. However, it seems like a lot more than that, for some reason. Really.

So, there's been stuff I've done and stuff I've don't. I will tell you briefly about as much as I can remember. It will include some photos and some stories.

Little Man Tate
Yesterday was exciting, costly and just great. I got into work and realised that Little Man Tate were playing later that day in Fopp Manchester. As it happened, it was the only day in weeks that I'd not brought my camera with me to work. So, at lunch, I hurried home and fetched my camera.

That's where the expensive part comes in; it's not cheap to catch the metrolink 4 times in a day, a bus and taxi to the house, and then to pay for dinner as well. I think in the end, I spent as much as I would if I were buying a ticket to watch the band play.

Anywho, I did get to watch the band play, and take photos. The band were brilliant, they are really good (music wise) and real friendly (person wise). They didn't mind me sticking around through the autograph signings and getting photos of people with the band. And then they'd invited a bunch of people to the pub afterwards - but I didn't go along. Wanted to get home instead.

Photos are up online at Flickr. Please check them out, and if you have an account, post a comment or note. Only a few of them are up on Opera Community; but I couldn't upload them all, the server monkey seemed to be asleep.

David Brent on Microsoft
We make some cool stuff in work sometimes. One of the videos we made for Microsoft has recently been leaked onto the wonderful world of the web; making various news sites across the net.

It starred Ricky Gervais as David Brent, his popular character from TV series 'The Office' and was made in conjunction with some other film agency for Microsoft as an internal Training Video. YouTube have pulled the video, apparently; but it's still on Google Video. There's the original edit, and then the out-takes.

Microsoft are holding an investigation into who leaked the video onto the web. I'm quite sure it wouldn't have been anyone from my work; but there will have been so many copies floating around over the past year. Employees of all three companies (mine, the film agency and Microsoft itself) would have passed it around the work place, friends, relatives. Not only that; people who have worked on the video would've left each company with a copy, and it made a nice addition to their portfolio - which could've been passed onto any number of people.

I'm not condoning the release / leak of the video (not that all this publicity is doing Microsoft any harm); I just don't find high hopes for Microsoft finding the culprit.

Whoever did release the video anyway, isn't very good at video encoding - it's rubbish quality! P:

Oh, and as I said, we do all sorts of cool stuff at work. If you're a rich person, or a company like Opera (nod nod, wink wink) and want some advertising / promotion / an event / branding / film and video / new media - navigate your way around our complicated website - then get in touch.

Until next time.

Re-launch

, , , ...

So, I'm back from Munkyfest. I have a whole load of photos that I need to upload, and when I do - I'll blog about the Munkyfest experience. But in short; it was amazing.

What I'm posting about today is Gamestyle.

You see, most of my time on the internet (and in life in general) used to be spent on a videogame website called Gamestyle. I was a fan, at first; visiting the forums, chatting with other members - and getting my videogame news and review fix.

And then, I joined the site. I helped them do a bunch of stuff. It became nearly a job in itself to help run and maintain the site. The site was doing well too - three writers moved on to become professional videogame industry writers - and we had loads and loads of visitors.

Then it got hacked. We lost a few visitors through this, but we got it back online. Then it got hacked again, and we brought it back again. Then it got hacked once more... and we decided to redesign it before we brought it back.

And... to cut the story short; I became lazy...

So, nearly a year later (!) Gamestyle is back online.

Now all we have ahead is a bright future and a long hard struggle to get people visiting and contributing to the site once more. This means this is the part of the post where I turn to you and ask you to visit the website.

If you are into videogames, please visit Gamestyle or sign up the forums. If you know anyone who's into videogames, please let them know of the website. If you have your own web pages; please link to Gamestyle.

We'd like to get Gamestyle as popular as it once was, and I'd like help in doing so.

Thank you.

Microsoft & Yahoo! have joined forces.

I couldn't have put it better myself than when Yahoo! said it:

It's a great day for the world of instant messaging. Working hand-in-hand with our friends at Windows Live™ (MSN) Messenger, we've connected our IM communities, making it even easier for you to stay in touch.

From [today], using the new Yahoo! Messenger, you can see when your Windows Live™ (MSN) Messenger contacts are online and send
them instant messages. Keep all your friends in one place and IM with them anytime!

What a brilliant time to switch to Yahoo! Messenger.

The Big Switch

If you ever needed a good reason to switch from Internet Explorer to a new web browser, tomorrow is as a good excuse as any.

To cut a long story short, a patent was filed which basically claimed control of any ActiveX content embedded within web pages. This resulted in Microsoft getting sued for Internet Explorer, and Microsoft lost the case.

Should your computer be set to AutoUpdate, you can't help but download the latest version of IE tomorrow which will disable all embedded content; flash, video, pdfs, etc. This becomes a problem for interactivity on the web, where now you'll have to manually activate such embedded content before it works if the code behind the website fails to comply with the new rules.

Originally posted by Michael Wallent, GM of the Microsoft Windows Client Platform:

We've been talking to customers and partners about this update since December 2005, and we're trying to get them ready for what will happen once the IE update goes out to everyone. The majority of companies have successfully modified their content to make sure that no additional clicks will be required but some people need more time.

During an official demo of the changes, one source said some advertising content served by Yahoo! was impacted. What's more, Microsoft's own Channel9 marketing site was also partially affected during the demo. So, whilst most major, big name sites will have accomodated the changes, there's going to be lots of sites that won't actually function correctly.

So, the solution? Well, as I stated at the start of the post; what better reason to change to a new web browser.

What If's And Maybes

Taking a look at the latest ins-and-outs and ups-and-downs of recent days...

Film And Cinema
Today I seen the trailer for X-Men 3. For those that are interested, you can click here and watch it at Apple Trailers. Personally, I was quite impressed with what I was watching. I wasn't expecting to be a fan of the X-Men series, since I originally gave it a miss when it was out at the cinema, but ever since I bought 1 & 2 on DVD - I've been eagerly awaiting for the third.

Okay, it's probably quite a cheesey film, and the acting isn't the best ever - but then... the storyline is brilliant. The whole concept behind the film intreques me, because I can't help but wonder what it would be like if the storyline were true (to some extent). Regardless, you can count on me being in the cinema for when X-Men 3 (aka X3) is launched!

Video Games
Spending a long day at work, I was looking forward to returning home to find some brand new Nintendo DS games sat on the doorstep - one of which was set to be Mario Kart DS. I was particularly looking forward to receiving this because its the first online game for the DS and I've set up a Wi-Fi connection ready to play online...

...only when I got home, there's a note saying that there's two parcels at the Post Office. And so, that means there's going to be no DS games tonight, but rather I'll have to go out tomorrow and get them before work. Tonight I'll be watching a DVD instead. Or, playing on the Dreamcast.

That's right! I have been up in the loft this past weekend and fetched down my SEGA Dreamcast. This was my primary games console of choice whilst everyone was playing on their Sony Playstations' (upgrading to their PS2s) and Nintendo 64s'. It has some brilliant games on it, and I've a feeling I'm going to play it more than my Microsoft Xbox.

You won't see me playing on the Xbox 360 - because I sold that during the weekend for £500 - two hundred and twenty pounds more than what I paid for it. A good profit, I'm sure you'll agree.

Music
On the music front, I've had no luck this week with a band called Bromhead's Jacket. These guys were meant to have a single out on Monday called 'What Ifs & Maybes' and can I find it? No. There is a website online where I could buy it - but it's nearly £4 online - whereas if I can pick it up in the shops, it would be £1.99.

What's more, to add insult to injury; they were playing Monday night at Club NME in Manchester. Only, I didn't realise it was on so late... so, when I trotted along to the gig at 7.30pm (on my own, might I add) - I found out that the first bands weren't going to be on until 9.30pm, and there were three bands playing, with the night on a whole ending at 2am. Sorry lads, but I'm not hanging around that long - it's a Monday night FFS.

However, what I did manage to pick up is the new single by a band called Milk Kan. It's a good song - a bit cheesey, but good cheese. I love it.

The Rest
There's not much else happening in the life of Matt Cox - or at least not much that needs explaining in detail. So here's a few other things to whet your appertite until the next post.

The first person I met off the net was Vikki Lea Clarkson. She's a lovely girl and as I was on my way home from work, she was going to a concert at the MEN Arena - and we met in the train station. Yesterday her boyfriend split up with her, so I called her to cheer her up. It was cool to speak to her on the phone, because I usually only speak to her on the web. Plus, I forgot she has a funny accent.

For those geeky people amongst us, I made a Yahoo Toolbar for Opera Web Browser. I call it the Yahoobar. At the minute, its not quite complete - I need some advice from some Opera staff, really, to finish it off. And when its there, I'll release it to the general public. In the mean time, you can take a look at toolbar in its current state by clicking here. Leave some comments.

I'm getting really annoyed with myself for being such a pussy when it comes to women. See, there's the girl in HMV in town who I think is absolutely stunning, and aside from looking scared of me, has a cute personality too. I've mentioned her on here before, but I still haven't asked her out or anything - and probably should. Even if it comes to nothing... at least I'd have asked. I'll keep you updated.

Mmm. Ben & Jerry's ice cream is sooo nice. I have a tub of Phish Food in the freezer right now. I think I might eat it.
