American Prince (2009)

, , , ...

In 1978, director Martin Scorsese turned his camera on his friend and roommate, Steven Prince, creating the documentary 'American Boy'. Prince was best known for his role as the gun salesman in 'Taxi Driver', but to many was a true-life raconteur, actor, ex-drug addict, and road manager for Neil Diamond.

To Scorsese, Steven's life was more fascinating than what any screenwriter could dream up, it had to be captured in celluloid, and 'American Boy' did just that and became somewhat of a cult documentary amongst notable directors and movie-types - so much so that Quentin Tarantino based a famous scene from 'Pulp Fiction' on a story Prince had told of during the recording.

Three decades later, filmmaker and producer of 'A Scanner Darkly', Tommy Pallotta draws out Steven Prince to recount his days since 'American Boy' and to compose the next chapter of his story under the guise of a new documentary 'American Prince'.

Die Antwoord (2009)

Ever since Emily Walker introduced me to MaxNormal.TV, I've played his album to death - I love it - the CHOMMIE toys that Max Normal and Yo-Landi Visser make are awesome too.

2009 has seen Max Normal transform into 'Ninja' and together with Yo-Landi, snor-rap superstar Jack Parow and DJ Hi-Tek become the collective Die Antwoord.

All you need to do to be one of the first to check them out is download the MP3s (.torrent) - a $ampler of their forthcoming rap-rave megamix album $o$.

Track Listing:
01. Doos Dronk (3:40)
02. Enter the Ninja (5:07)
03. Rich Bitch (3:35)
04. Very Fancy (2:55)
05. Wat Pomp? (4:08)

Edit: If the torrent has no seeds email me and I'll get the files to you one way or another.

So, with a little help from this guide, I just installed the latest version of Vuze onto Ubuntu. I've used Vuze (or Azureus as it was previously known) for years; I'd just not needed it since reinstalling the OS on my PC.

If anyone uses this and wants to add me as a friend, feel free.

The Proposition (2005)

The other night I watched a film that I'd downloaded a while ago, The Proposition. The thing that attracted me to this film was that the screenplay was written by Nick Cave, and my interest in the film increased even more when I seen that it had a 7.5 rating on IMDb.

I'd hate to write a full movie review on my blog, or even give away any plot (hence why I'm reluctant to even write / copy a synopsis) but the movie is good and I recommend that you either buy it, or download it.

Does It Offend You, Yeah?

I noticed the other day that the past few weeks have carried a hearty number of major releases in the music industry world. Well, maybe not *major* releases, but plenty of releases from bands that I wanted to check out. So, I jumped on Amazon.co.uk to check the New & Upcoming Releases and then headed over to my good old friend The Pirate Bay for some downloading action.

All-in-all I downloaded about eight albums, one of which was a particularly wise move. You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into [yarr!] by Does It Offend You, Yeah? caught my eye the other day whilst wondering around Zavvi. It's a band that I've not particularly taken much notice of (in terms of checking out their material), but have seen them 'doing the rounds' over the past year or so.

With no idea what to expect, I stumbled upon a world of trashy electronic dance-punk mixed with what could sound like your favourite indie band, and it's not a bad thing in the slightest. With this release, Does It Offend You, Yeah? manage to blur that barrier between good music that you should be listening to and mainstream appeal. The album is awash with tracks that were pleasing to my ears and that I'm really loving at the minute - so much so that I took a trip back to Zavvi and bought a physical copy of the album.

I suggest you get a copy of the album, turn your speakers / headphones up loud and enjoy.

Little People - Mickey Mouse Operation

Back when the internet was younger and broadband wasn't widely available (I'm talking 1999/2000), I was downloading music from the likes of Napster on my 56k modem - this was when Napster was good - I had all this music at my fingertips and it was completely free! Granted, it could have taken over half an hour to download one track, but this was still amazing, albeit illegal.

However, there were also legal places to download free music from. One of my favourites to visit was peoplesound.com which encouraged upcoming artists to upload their tracks and build a music profile of their own - kind of like MySpace or PureVolume - and this is where I found an artist called Little People.

I remember downloading the three or four 'instrumental hip-hop' tracks that were available and they resided on my hard drive until I re-discovered them about six years later. Similar artists include DJ Shadow, Blockhead, Koushik and RJD2. I did some research into the artist and it turns out they were Manchester-based and that they were soon due to release an album - 'Mickey Mouse Operation' - which I then bought from Piccadilly Records.

Now, since these guys aren't that widely known, I figured I'd make the whole album available on my blog, but via bittorrent - so get your clients ready (or just use Opera). If you like what you hear, you can purchase the album from Amazon / Amazon Marketplace from just £4.98 (6.88 EUR).

Downloads:
Little People - Start Shootin' (sample track, hosted on zShare)
Little People - Mickey Mouse Operation (full album, torrent, hosted on The Pirate Bay)

NOTE: Keep the torrent alive by seeding after your download is complete. Recommended ratio of 2, kthxbye.

Detroit Rock City

, , , ...

Tonight I watched Detroit Rock City for the first time (in full, at least). I'd seen part of the film before in high school when the year above me were watching it in their class, and I went in to watch it too. That's going back to the year 1999 or possibly 2000 - I didn't get to see the whole film though.

Since then, I'd only seen it in the shops once - but when I actually went back to the store with money to buy it, it was gone! I never really shopped online at the time, so never thought to look for the DVD on Amazon - until the other night... after I'd downloaded the torrent (magnet).

It's very much a teen movie where the story centers around a group of kids who idolise KISS (the band) and tells of their journey to see them live in Detroit. IMDB's rating for the movie is above-average (five makes for an average movie, right?) but rates it as not a being great, but I really like it; the movie carries a certain charm.

I've put the film on my Amazon Wishlist and if I don't end up getting it for Christmas, I'll no doubt buy it in the new year - because it's not likely to make its' way to HD DVD anytime soon (yes, I'd love this film in HD).
