Last.fm Beta

Last.fm Beta

Yesterday, Last.fm announced that a new beta of their site is available, and so as a subscriber (because it's available to subscribers only) I was straight on there to check it out.

Some of the new features included 'Your Library' (the ability to drill down into your entire music profile to every last artist and track scrobbled), real time charts, an improved music player, podcasts, sharing options, activity feeds and a new design - and whilst it's a win situation on some parts, it's very much a lose situation on others.

The biggest problem for me (and other users) is the new design. I can understand that hauling over a major site in the way of design will be tough - because people don't like change, and a mass userbase will react badly to it (I'm sure Opera Community staff can vouch for that). But Last.fm have turned their music orientated site into yet another social network clone - and that's what's ruining it for me.

Browsing through the site, I see that some pages have improved. In the case of the artist page, information is easier to find and bands, artists, visitors and users alike will have a more familiar layout to navigate around (since it pretty much looks like a cross between a MySpace profile and a Facebook profile), but the same treatment to the profile page just makes Last.fm look like another generic boring social networking site - especially with the addition of the Facebook-like 'Activity Feed'.

I'm torn on this one, but I guess I'm just going to have to put up with whatever we're given - I've used Last.fm since the Audioscrobbler days, so it's not like I'll be joining iLike anytime soon.

If you're a Last.fm subscriber, head over to beta.last.fm now to make up your own mind. For those that aren't subscribers to Last.fm, you can get your own sneak peek at the new beta in this photo album on Opera Community.

goFASTER%3E%3E - Promo Shot

Boss-pop band goFASTER>> have released their new single "Flammable Leisurewear" on Alcopop records - what a perfect combination! It feels like I've achieved something, even though I had chuff all to do with this momentous occasion.

The release is a very special (limited to 500 copies) pressing of a 7" vinyl, the first 100 of which are graced by a hand-crafted tracksuit sleeve and a CD featuring a digital copy of the tracks. The artwork for the release is in the style of a matchbox, designed by Paul Rafferty of Hot Club de Paris, complete with coarse striking surface - so if one had a match, you could actually burn Flammable Leisurewear yourself whilst listening to the song.

If you're feeling so inclined, you can pick up a copy of the release direct from the Alcopop store.

In other goFASTER>> news; I was looking to see if the single "Flammable Leisurewear" was on Amazon the other day. It wasn't - but I did find an import copy of their Japanese album "Magazine Addictions" which they are sneaking overseas from 5th March (possibly months before a UK album). If you're eager to hear what a full goFASTER>> album may sound like, it might be worth investing in - I say 'invest' because it will set you back 20 GBP.

Buy:
Flammable Leisurewear (Alcopop Store)
Magazine Addictions (Amazon UK)

Streaming:

goFASTER>> – Girl With The Reputation
goFASTER>> – You Better Watch Out

Vote for Dick, Vote for Vikki

, , , ...

I hope you all have primarily noticed the new blog design. It was all part of Wednesday's blog post about moving onto better things; and I'll hope you'll agree that this theme is an improvement over the last one. Comments much appreciated.

I went out to The Retro Bar on Wednesday night. There were a few bands playing, and its a law that I have to be at every Pickled Dick gig in Manchester. Entry was 5 pounds and there were four bands playing; the first three of whom I got to see.

I was impressed by The Holy Parachute, who were first on and played some nice ska. Pickled Dick were up next, and they played some new songs that I'd never heard before, and they sounded ace. And Random Hand were really impressive - though sometimes went off on a screamy 'I can shout loud' tangent.

I took my camera along and grabbed some pictures. It's been absolutely ages since I've shot in proper gig conditions and most of them looked good on the back of the camera, but really crap when I transferred them across to the computer last night. I'll see what I can salvage soon and update this or an upcoming post with a picture or two. Expect them to be black and white.

Whilst I'm on the subject of Pickled Dick, they have entered a competition to be in the next Burnout video game. If you would be so kind as to vote for them, you may hear their song on your PS3 / Xbox 360 with the coming release. Non-MySpace account holders need not apply.

Finally, Vikki has asked of your opinion on the tattoo she wants to get next. It's of an interrobang; but should it be horizontal or vertical? You decide.

Seeing Red.

, , , ...

It seems that I've performed a re-skin of my blog. It's now red. So, if you're seeing blue bits still, you need to hit F5 a couple of times. I welcome all feedback; so long as you leave it in the comments section.

Elsewhere, and amid going to work and back each day; I've managed to get a few more 'Sketchy Stuff' stickers around the place. Clicking on that link will take you to the set of photos on Opera Community. The images down the right will take you to flickr.

Right now, I have to tell you about all the post I had today - and most of it was in parcel form. Or a 'packet' as the new Royal Mail post guidelines would have you believe.

Parcel Number 1
A book that I'd found in Waterstones and was tempted to buy. Only, in store it was £14.99 and I didn't want it that much. So, I went online and managed to order it from Green Metropolis... for £3.75, free delivery. Bargain!

Parcel Number 2
As I was browsing the online bookstore, I realised I could probably get another book that I've wanted to read for a similar price. I did a search on books about Bill Oddie, and then Rolf Harris. I bought this for £3.75 too - but delivery was £1.50 because it's a hardback. Still, BARGAIN!

Parcel Number 3
This wasn't as big as the other two, and I wasn't quite expecting it so soon - so it was a surprise to see Encyclopedia's new single arrive on my doorstep. It's there in all it's mini-cd-single glory. Twice. You can buy it twice from Alcopop too.

Parcel Number 4
Now, this was a nice surprise. I'd totally forgotten about these until I slid them out of the envelope. The site that everyone seems to be blogging about at the minute, Moo (they love printing, so I hear), sent me my 10 free MiniCard prints.

They are really nicely presented 'business cards', if you will. The idea is that you pick a load of your flickr photos and they print them for you. I only upload lo-res 640x480 JPGs, so was surprised that these came out at such a good quality. I'll deffinately be paying for some more.

Parcel Number 5
Last but not least was the parcel I was expecting to receive when I was told I had post. This was from Jhon out of Pickled Dick. He sent me a bunch of the latest run of I <3 Dick stickers. They're lovely. Thank you Jhon.

So, maybe getting to see the sort of things I get delivered to me wasn't as exciting as I'd imagined when I started writing this post - but hey, I managed to update my blog.

Until next time.

That'll Do.

Yeah, so as you may be able to see; I've redesigned by blog. I was getting bored of the theme that was there, and decided that I needed a new theme. So, redid it. I hope you all like it. Please leave feedback in the comments section to this post.

Meanwhile, check out what I bought from Toys-R-US!!

Update: Thanks to all the people that have commented on the new look so far. It's appreciated. I just uploaded photos of some other 'stuff' that I did today:

Happy Days!

, , , ...

Well, the past few days have been cool. My folks are away in America, and have been for the past two weeks - so I've had the house to myself. Well, I say myself; my girlfriend has been staying over quite a bit. But its been good.

In terms of work, design and stuff; I've found my inspiration again, I guess. We've got a pitch in for Someone & Someone (a potential client) and I've been designing an interface for an application which will aid them in creating and showcasing custom presentations to their clients and employees. But, because I'm enjoying working on it, its enthused me to plough on with other site's I've got to do; such as Gamestyle and Encyclopedia's new site.

The design work that I'm doing for Someone & Someone has to be done by later today - so its not like it's going to drag out and I'm to get bored of it. Plus, it should hopefully get me a little more time this afternoon to complete Gamestyle and code Encyclopedia's site.

Fridays at work come to a close at 4pm where we go upstairs and have a few bevvies and some food, until we finish an hour earlier than normal, at 5pm, instead of 6pm. When that time comes, I'll be meeting Vikki in town and then we're going to see BBC Blast.

BBC Blast is a one-day festival that's been put on by the BBC in Manchester's Albert Square. It's a free, unticketed event and there's a handful of local upcoming bands on stage from 5.45pm until late. I'm taking my camera and may post some shots online afterwards; but then it might be no good at all, and not work sticking around at.

A gig that was worth going to recently was Pickled Dick (now on Wikipedia!) at the Manchester Academy 3. If you regularly check out my photo albums, you'd have seen the photos already. If not, click here. It's a shame really, because not too many people were there - the whole of town was empty, not just the venue - but it was still a good performance.

I took the band presents which consisted of; a rubber chicken and a plastic chicken full of jelly beans for Jhon, a nickel-cadium battery, a snickers and a magazine with a policeman saying 'you're nicked' on the cover for Nick, and a fake turd, toilet paper and mini microphone for Domb. At first they all looked really confused by their presents - but it didn't take long before they started playing with them. I think the rubber chicken ended up eating the turd, drinking Nick's beer and throwing up.

Anyway, with all that excitement put to one side, I need to get back to work. If I take shots of the concert tonight, I'll post them this weekend.

Until then...

Mmm, Beta.
