In 1978, director Martin Scorsese turned his camera on his friend and roommate, Steven Prince, creating the documentary 'American Boy'. Prince was best known for his role as the gun salesman in 'Taxi Driver', but to many was a true-life raconteur, actor, ex-drug addict, and road manager for Neil Diamond.
To Scorsese, Steven's life was more fascinating than what any screenwriter could dream up, it had to be captured in celluloid, and 'American Boy' did just that and became somewhat of a cult documentary amongst notable directors and movie-types - so much so that Quentin Tarantino based a famous scene from 'Pulp Fiction' on a story Prince had told of during the recording.
Three decades later, filmmaker and producer of 'A Scanner Darkly', Tommy Pallotta draws out Steven Prince to recount his days since 'American Boy' and to compose the next chapter of his story under the guise of a new documentary 'American Prince'.

Check out this amazing post-war (1948) NHS propaganda video on the dangers of sneezing. Very apt in these trying times of Swine Flu.
This video was on the NHS website, but The Internet Archive is a wonderful place - where the video is available for download.
All this swine flu media hype is silly. I won't believe it until I catch the virus myself. Let's just hope Madagascar closes it's port sometime soon.

Absolutely ages ago I bought some black and white Ilford film; the speed was 3200 and I couldn't wait to use it. The plan was to shoot Vile Vile Creatures - but we never got around to it. So, I took the camera to Worcester and used the film after Christmas, through to the end of January.
I shot this on a Diana+ where there's only 3 exposure settings - cloudy, partly cloudy and sunny - and so I'd set this to the longest one and started shooting.
The shot above is my friend Emily Walker on the train. I love the way the things passing the window have turned out, but wish the whole shot was a bit lighter. Photoshopping shows way too much grain.

On Friday night I watched The Boy In the Striped Pyjamas; it was a film that had a limited cinema release - and I think I missed my chance to see it - so downloaded it after seeing the trailer.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas shows the developing friendship between two boys when a family move to a new area of Germany during the second World War, after the father of the family is assigned to run a Nazi-Germany Concentration Camp.
Knowing this was the story, and that the film had a limited release, I was expecting it to be in German with English subtitles - so was quite surprised to find that all the actors were British English and spoke with middle-class British accents. Once you get over this though, you'll find yourself watching a good heart-wrenching film that's well made.
If you get the chance, I recommend you go and see the film. Failing that, download the movie via bittorrent at The Pirate Bay or buy it on DVD.

Today at lunchtime I walked across town in the rain and got a film back from Advanced Photo. I had enough time to upload a few shots, so have done. You can see the photos on my Flickr account.
There's some random shots of Salford Quays, some shots from the FOUND! Magazine tour and a cool shot of my friend Hannah from Sunday - not amazing shots, but I was dying to get rid of this film and load my Konica Auto S2 with a black and white film - so glad to get these processed.

This just looks like the most amazing film ever - why haven't I seen anything about this before now? Why haven't any of my friends told me about this before now?!

Last night Vikki and I watched The Darjeeling Limited. I enjoyed it, it was fun - I couldn't quite tell you what it was all about... it was all a bit random, but very watchable. We laughed.

Tonight Vikki and I watched Felon - where a family man loses everything when he accidentally kills a burglar who broke into his home. I enjoyed it, it was tense - the story was captivating. We cried, nearly.

The other night I watched a film that I'd downloaded a while ago, The Proposition. The thing that attracted me to this film was that the screenplay was written by Nick Cave, and my interest in the film increased even more when I seen that it had a 7.5 rating on IMDb.
I'd hate to write a full movie review on my blog, or even give away any plot (hence why I'm reluctant to even write / copy a synopsis) but the movie is good and I recommend that you either buy it, or download it.
