Air Adam Podcast

, , , ...

"Playing in clubs is cool but restricts you to how many people you can get into the venue," tells Air Adam, who is more commonly known amongst Manchester folk for his DJing and also amongst Flickr members for his photography. "And of course, you need to keep it 'danceable' so there's a lot of stuff which is difficult/impossible to fit into a set."

Adam is talking about his debut podcast. Launched in June 2009 and set for a monthly release, the self-titled recording exposes his raw passion and interest for Hip-Hop and provides interesting and educational insight that can be appreciated by avid followers or newcomers to the genre.

"It's really a way for me to share and get into discussions on music. I grew up in the pre-internet era - at that time, there was little if any Hip-Hop on TV or commercial radio, and so for a kid with a limited budget wanting to learn about it there were three main sources of music and info; tape swapping, pirate radio and magazines."

Adam hopes that his podcast can use the internet as a platform to rekindle the personal essence of sharing music, the way exchanging a mix-tapes with a friend would - exposing the music he likes and that we'd like to hear - rather than have music imposed on us for commercial gain.

Keen to show that he's not to be pigeonholed, and helping the podcast reach a wider audience, Adam continues, "There'll be a mixture of Hip-Hop and music more generally, 'underground' and 'commercial', the somewhat known and the utterly forgotten, new and old, the conscious and the ignorant, and the straightforward and the slightly bizarre! I hope you'll find it interesting and entertaining."

The Air Adam Podcast is available on a free subscription via podcast.airadam.com and also through iTunes Music Store. Episode Two of the podcast was released today.

American Prince (2009)

, , , ...

In 1978, director Martin Scorsese turned his camera on his friend and roommate, Steven Prince, creating the documentary 'American Boy'. Prince was best known for his role as the gun salesman in 'Taxi Driver', but to many was a true-life raconteur, actor, ex-drug addict, and road manager for Neil Diamond.

To Scorsese, Steven's life was more fascinating than what any screenwriter could dream up, it had to be captured in celluloid, and 'American Boy' did just that and became somewhat of a cult documentary amongst notable directors and movie-types - so much so that Quentin Tarantino based a famous scene from 'Pulp Fiction' on a story Prince had told of during the recording.

Three decades later, filmmaker and producer of 'A Scanner Darkly', Tommy Pallotta draws out Steven Prince to recount his days since 'American Boy' and to compose the next chapter of his story under the guise of a new documentary 'American Prince'.

'American Prince' has been legally made available to download for free via mininova.org

Spotify Scrobbles

Spotify (Screenshot)

Hurrah! The best web news I've heard all day - possibly all week! Spotify, the media player that's basically one massive music library which allows you to stream any music on-demand for free, has just implemented Last.fm scrobbling.

As I said when I requested the feature, I'm a massive Last.fm fan and although really liked Spotify, couldn't see myself using it on a serious level until they did introduced scrobbling. And now they have, I'll stick to my work and be using Spotify a lot more often.

If you're a label or artist, I recommend that you get in touch with Spotify and see what the score is with getting your tracks on their service. For sure.

Tubelord - Photo by Stacey Hatfield

One of my favourite bands, Tubelord, have posted their EP 'Square' on the asktubelord.com blog for free download.

Around 600 copies of the EP were pressed and Tubelord only play 2 of the tracks in live shows nowadays. "Does that mean they've become Tubelord artefacts?" asks Joseph.

Track Listing:

  1. Propeller
  2. Ultra-Machine
  3. The Death of a Digital Alarm Clock
  4. Arm Watches Fingers

You can catch Tubelord at various UK venues from November 2008 through to January 2009; including Nastyfest in Leeds and Sŵn Festival in Cardiff. For more tour dates and other information, hit up their MySpace.

S - Puking and Crying (logo / artwork)

This weekend, Vikki and I went into Piccadilly Records where to have a browse through the musical treasures the store holds, and there was a sale section with many records for 2 GBP. Vikki decided it would be a good idea for us to each buy a CD by an artist that we've never heard of before - so we did.

Admittedly, I thought that 2 GBP was a steal for a CD, so I ended up buying a few different ones, each with interesting covers, but my favourite by far has to be S - Puking and Crying.

After doing a little research, I found that the artist is Jenn Ghetto, who goes under the monkier 'S' with 'Puking and Crying' as her second full-length record. Interestingly, Jenn Ghetto was the co-leader of the band Carissa’s Wierd, who split up in 2003, with members Mat Brooke and Ben Bridwell going on to form Band of Horses.

The tracks on 'Puking and Crying' are quite dark and intimate and I really like the whole record - my two favourite tracks being '5 Dollers' and '100x' - both of which I've uploaded to this post.

This has an up-close feel to it, a direct look into the songwriter and quite possibly could have been made distinctly for fans of Björk who need fewer theatrics, lovers of Belle and Sebastian longing for less posturing, and admirers of The Postal Service who aren’t afraid to get a little dirty.
