DOG!

This Saturday I picked up two rolls of film up from Advanced Photo in Manchester; one was a black & white film that had been in my camera since June 08 and the second was an expired roll of cheap colour stuff that I used to rattle off a load of Tellison / Tubelord shots. One of the first things I did when I got home was post the black & white shots to Flickr.

You can see all the shots that I've uploaded from the black & white film by clicking the link below. Gig photos to follow shortly.

Tellison / Tubelord / The Maple State / Scholars

Tellison are, without doubt, one of the best live bands around - I've just returned home from seeing them play Manchester's Roadhouse. Support was from Tubelord, The Maple State - who are each excellent - and Scholars, who I missed play.

It's the last tour for Ben, who plays in Tellison as part of the live line-up - but this just means that there's some exciting new stuff in the pipeline from Encyclopedia, which can only be a good thing!

I shot a whole roll of film and have no idea what I was doing with the flash / retro 60s manual camera combination. Hopefully I'll be able to post some pics next weekend.

Today is my Summer

, , , ...

I'm out in the garden, in the (really hot!) sun with Vikki and Hannah. Opera Mini ftw! My mum and dad are back from Ireland for the week, so they're milling around too.

Later on tonight, Luke Leighfield is playing my hometown with Tim and Sam's Tim and Sam Band with Tim and Sam, so we'll probably trott along to that.

Today is my summer.

Tea Time Tango Too!!

Sad Shields and Vile Vile Creatures logos

Around this time last year, I posted about Tea Time Tango!! - an event at Manchester's Castle Hotel featuring Vile Vile Creatures, Party Wierdo and Fake Tan. I went along and it was fun, they even had their own indoor waterfall.

This year, Tea Time Tango!! returns to mark the start of a UK tour for Sad Shields and Vile Vile Creatures and I urge anyone in the vicinity of Manchester to attend.

Details are sketchy, but it will most likely kick off at 4pm in the Castle Hotel. Entrance is free, but you can donate money to the bands or buy their merchendise on the day if you're so inclinded. RSVP on Upcoming or Last.fm

If you can't make it to Manchester, check out the MySpace of either Vile Vile Creatures or Sad Shields for all the latest UK tour info, door times and entry fees. Be sure to make it along to one of the dates for your fill of noise.

3:55am; I Think We Should Go Home

coxy (left) and Gerry McLaughlin (right) of Channel M

The other night I went to see a few bands play at Night & Day Cafe - playing that night were Sky Larkin, Elle S'Appelle and headlining, Hot Club de Paris - it was hosted by Channel M (a local television station for Manchester). It's been a while since I've seen Hot Club de Paris, and they've recently returned from Chicago where they recorded the follow-up to their debut album 'Drop It Till It Pops'.

So far as the bands go, I can't say I'm a fan of Sky Larkin. I've heard the name banded about for a long while, but I've just never taken any notice of them. I don't think I'd been missing out on much. Elle S'Appelle were good, as usual, but sounded a bit more 'noisy' than previous gigs. And Hot Club were... good... but I was slightly disappointed that they rushed through their older material. It was nice to hear the new songs, though.

The whole night was filmed by Channel M and will be broadcast over the next week, shortly appearing on their website after that, no doubt. In the meantime, you can watch this video of Elle S'Appelle on Channel M.

After the gig, Mark, Holly and Neil departed and Vikki dragged Hannah back to our house where we stayed up far too late and watched Ghost World. Well, Hannah and Vikki did. I fell asleep. Zzz.

Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon

Sunday night I went to see Kings of Leon play live at Manchester Central (previously known as the G-MEX) for the third time since 2003. I was on the guestlist (+1) for the event because I was set to review it for Entertainment Manchester.

In short; it was absolutely amazing. I don't think I've enjoyed a gig so much in a long while - and I've never stopped playing their albums since I've come home. Be sure to catch my full review, which is set to appear on the site. I don't know if I'm happy with my writing, but practice makes perfect. Right?

If you haven't heard of Kings of Leon before now, you must've been living under a rock. Either way, I'm going to toss some free music downloads in your direction for you to enjoy. However, to support the cause, they're not MP3s and are actually OGG files. I suggest you find out how to play OGG files (iTunes users click here), because the quality of these files is simply superb.

You can pick up Kings of Leon material for fairly cheap nowadays, so don't shy of buying stuff if you like what you hear.

Downloads:
Kings of Leon - Spiral Staircase (OGG format, hosted on senduit.com | Mirror 1, Mirror 2)
Kings of Leon - Pistol of Fire (OGG format, hosted on senduit.com | Mirror 1, Mirror 2)
Kings of Leon - Charmer (OGG format, hosted on senduit.com | Mirror 1, Mirror 2)

A Reminder.

, , , ...

Birthday's of the 21st variety rarely pass without some sort of celebration or 'shin-dig' – yet for my own I've elected to delight and entertain the masses by putting on a live music show – of which I invite you to attend.

The 29th April will see some Scousers and some random Southerners make their way to Font Bar, Manchester, followed by crowds from all across the globe (true fact; we have members of one of Holland's hottest rock band's The Heaven's Devils and super cool geeks from Norway in the way of Opera Web Browser attending and sponsoring the event).

Bands performing will be known under the following names:

MR KAMIKAZE AND HIS MECHANICAL ANIMALS (myspace) has been formed from the smoking remains of other reputable bands such as Blame It On Edd, Pickled Dick and The JB Conspiracy. With influences such as Gang of Four, They Might Be Giants and Weezer, this is one band not to be missed as they perform one of their first (well, their second, actually) live gig ever!

ENCYCLOPEDIA (myspace) hail from Yeovil and are two very sweet and lovely boys who (if you could only but imagine such a thing) sound a bit like you're listening to Thin Lizzy whilst playing Nintendo – they have a very unique indie pop electronic rock vibe going on, to coin many genres. If that's not tempting you to pop-on-by, may I also reiterate that they're two lovely boys who are so good looking they might turn you gay.

goFASTER>> (myspace) are the Scousers that I mentioned before, and also Hot Club de Paris' best buddies and name-dropping flavour of the month. They generally sing witty retorts about their life experiences; shit jobs, daytime television and STDs. I nearly forgot to mention, they sound awesome too.

Entrance to the venue will be FREE and the usual array of drinks will be on offer at Font; which usually amounts to 'two for one' on Peroni, Cocktails for two pounds and a variety of other bargains.

Hope to see you there.

This event is listed on Upcoming.org, Last.fm and Facebook.

So, most of tonight was spent putting Ubuntu back on my machine. If you remember, my Hard Drive failed towards the end of last week and I lost my Operating Systems - rendering me partially operational. I am back in the swing of things and fully operational again, I'm sure you'll be pleased to know. It is nice to have a clean installation on my machine again - sometimes its good to start over. You learn from past mistakes and learn how to organise things better.

The first thing I did after installing Ubuntu on my machine was to install Opera. I'm now using as my default web browser, RSS reader, Email client and for IRC. Because I had a few quibbles with how Opera handled certain things, I previously used Evolution for email, Liferea for RSS and X-Chat for IRC - but that was until Ramunas shared a few of his own tips and tricks. Props to Vikki for buying me a new hard drive... even it was a selfish act; she just wanted to play Oblivion.

Anyway, geekiness aside, I've got a job prospects to mention.

So, Monday evening I went to Flame Digital for an interview, or a 'chat' as they seem to be referred to in the web design industry. I wasn't too sure of what to expect, but it was quite the pleasant experience; the company is a nice size and the office is a nice space. The overall atmosphere and vibe was a lot better than the other companies I've seen so far, and they seem like a fairly competent team.

Between the nerves and the questions about the salary, the usual questions were batted too-and-throw and I think it all went quite well. I may have chatted on a bit too much, but that can be put down to my nerves too. My options now are to sit back and wait; this is the part I hate most. I know I'm up to the task, and would like to work for this company - the ball's in their court now.

In the meantime, I've found a few things to occupy my time; punk-pop rockers Pickled Dick have asked me to head up their Street Team. I love these guys, and when I was at their Manchester gig the other night, Jhon asked me if I could help them out. Since then I've given their street team a face-lift (it's such a chore to style MySpace profiles!) and am well up for helping them spread the word.

I've also a gig scheduled for next Thursday. Hot Club de Paris are playing on a ferry 'cross the Mersey, supported by goFASTER>> and SSS. It's all being filmed for Channel 4, will be broadcast as part of their 'Secret Gigs' schedule and it's the first time I've ever been to a gig on a boat. I'm quite looking forward to it. I'll take my camera and see what pictures I can grab - but I don't suppose it'll be much, what with an official film crew being there to capture it themselves.

Before I sign off for the day, I'd just like to tell those that are subscribing to this feed via Feedburner (and please do), you'll start seeing links from my Ma.gnolia account. Hopefully this will result in being a good thing, as opposed to bad. Let me know what you think though, because the change is easily reversible.

Better.

, , , ...

Well, after the shambles that was me feeling sick, I am now feeling much better. I think we all learnt from the situation; but I'm not quite sure what. Maybe that "feeling better" or "moving onto better things" is the theme for today.

Tonight will see my move off my ass, out of my house and into town to see the one and only Pickled Dick play Manchester's Retro Bar (upcoming) with a bunch of other thugs and lugs (Grown at Home, Random Hand... if they ring any bells?) If anyone reading my blog happens to be in the area, or wants to make the effort to be in the area; come say hello.

I'm unsure of taking my camera. I haven't taken photos at a gig in ages. I guess the last one I did was the Virgin in-store by Little Man Tate. I was kinda hoping that I would meet Pickled Dick earlier on, before the gig, and I could've taken a few promo shots around Manchester for them. But then, they're not psychic and I didn't ask them about it.

On the wonderful world of the web I've also today stopped using Yahoo! MyWeb bookmarking service in favour of the ever flourishing Ma.gnolia bookmarking service who offer a few interesting features over MyWeb and looks prettier. Moving between the services means a change in RSS feed, and you can all subscribe to my picks of the internet if you see fit. Plus, if anyone has an account at Ma.gnolia, let me know and I'll add you as a friend.

(vikki always tells me that when i speak about the intenet, it makes for a boring blog post. that wasn't so painful now, was it?)

Job hunting isn't quite going as well as I'd hoped; and we've come to the conclusion that I'm setting my sights too high. I'm used to seeing all these fab web-based companies that don't seem to exist within the walls of Manchester (or England, if you don't count Last.fm), and that I should focus on some crapper company and help make them better.

I wouldn't mind going into a smaller company if I was confident in that they'd trust my judgement. There seems to be a lot of quite mediocre companies out there that seem to maybe know how to code and create a website, for example, but then have no clue what to do in terms of selling themselves to the client or indeed winning good jobs / clients. Or of course the other way around; companies that are full of poncey designers who think that making a website look good and talking the talk is all that's needed in making a good website / end product.

Yesterday I came across REFORM Creative; they have a nice looking site and some nice work in their portfolio. But, as the more savvy amongst you may discover, their website is a bit shit and they don't exploit the field of web design. However, I wasn't too sure of this, so dropped them an email.

I didn't disclose too much information, and it sounds like they thought I was a potential client. They mentioned that they can design for web / new media based material, but their primarily print based. They will then out-source the coding side of things when it comes to producing a project. I've seen one or two pieces of their print-based work in the flesh (without actually knowing it was by them) and was quite impressed.

I wonder whether hiring someone like myself would be advantageous to them? I mean, I could design and create a whole range of new media / web based material for their clients. Okay, I don't quite know Flash or aren't a programmer; but I can do websites and other new media-based work... and I'm sure that with what I know alone they could keep not only more of the work 'in-house' instead of out-sourcing, but actually take on more / pitch for more web work.

Anyway, I'm going to get ready to go out.

9 Days

, , , ...

Nine is the number of days it's been since I updated this blog. However, it seems like a lot more than that, for some reason. Really.

So, there's been stuff I've done and stuff I've don't. I will tell you briefly about as much as I can remember. It will include some photos and some stories.

Little Man Tate
Yesterday was exciting, costly and just great. I got into work and realised that Little Man Tate were playing later that day in Fopp Manchester. As it happened, it was the only day in weeks that I'd not brought my camera with me to work. So, at lunch, I hurried home and fetched my camera.

That's where the expensive part comes in; it's not cheap to catch the metrolink 4 times in a day, a bus and taxi to the house, and then to pay for dinner as well. I think in the end, I spent as much as I would if I were buying a ticket to watch the band play.

Anywho, I did get to watch the band play, and take photos. The band were brilliant, they are really good (music wise) and real friendly (person wise). They didn't mind me sticking around through the autograph signings and getting photos of people with the band. And then they'd invited a bunch of people to the pub afterwards - but I didn't go along. Wanted to get home instead.

Photos are up online at Flickr. Please check them out, and if you have an account, post a comment or note. Only a few of them are up on Opera Community; but I couldn't upload them all, the server monkey seemed to be asleep.

David Brent on Microsoft
We make some cool stuff in work sometimes. One of the videos we made for Microsoft has recently been leaked onto the wonderful world of the web; making various news sites across the net.

It starred Ricky Gervais as David Brent, his popular character from TV series 'The Office' and was made in conjunction with some other film agency for Microsoft as an internal Training Video. YouTube have pulled the video, apparently; but it's still on Google Video. There's the original edit, and then the out-takes.

Microsoft are holding an investigation into who leaked the video onto the web. I'm quite sure it wouldn't have been anyone from my work; but there will have been so many copies floating around over the past year. Employees of all three companies (mine, the film agency and Microsoft itself) would have passed it around the work place, friends, relatives. Not only that; people who have worked on the video would've left each company with a copy, and it made a nice addition to their portfolio - which could've been passed onto any number of people.

I'm not condoning the release / leak of the video (not that all this publicity is doing Microsoft any harm); I just don't find high hopes for Microsoft finding the culprit.

Whoever did release the video anyway, isn't very good at video encoding - it's rubbish quality! P:

Oh, and as I said, we do all sorts of cool stuff at work. If you're a rich person, or a company like Opera (nod nod, wink wink) and want some advertising / promotion / an event / branding / film and video / new media - navigate your way around our complicated website - then get in touch.

Until next time.
