Day One in Oslo

, , , ...

Well, today has been fun. After touching down in Torp (which has a lovely country-side atmosphere, despite the airport), I set off on the two hour journey to Oslo where I was greeted by Espen, Aleks and Robert. The weather in Norway is superb right now; the hot sun was a refreshing change from the rain that both Manchester and Liverpool had when I left.

The Opera Community guys and I headed across town and back to Opera HQ where I met a whole load of employees; some familiar faces from my last visit, some familiar faces from online and some totally new people. After walking around the offices a lot, meeting people, we sat out on the balcony for a round of 'Friday Drinks'.

Espen had invited everyone back to his for a BBQ, and so that's where we went next. Both I and Oleg have a whole load of pictures. I won't be able to upload mine for a while (I forgot my USB cable) - so any photos on this blog are courtesy of Robert and his mobile phone.

It's not long past midnight here in Oslo. After eating food off the BBQ and a night of Guitar Hero III on the 360, everyone has left for the night. Espen and I are just chilling out now; Stine has gone to bed.

I love it here, today has been excellent. Everyone is really friendly and welcoming and the city is beautiful.

September Stats Sampler 2008

SSS

A few months ago, someone on Opera Community (I can't remember who!) posted a blog post about their Hitslink stats. I figured I'd pay for a month's worth of full-on Hitslink stats goodness so I could be as cool as other Opera Community blog posters and do the same. So this is it. Welcome to my September Stats Sampler 2008 (SSS).

First I guess the logical step is to find the most popular search terms for my blog. These are words or key phrases that have been searched for and then my blog found and it's no surprise that the top keyword to find my blog is 'sexy' with 4.16% of total visitors finding coxy the sexiest mutha on the web! Damn right!

It does make me wonder what sort of people click though so many pages of search results as to find my blog from the keyword 'sexy' - I'm not in the first ten pages of results on any search engine - why bother?! Alas, people do, and this apparently makes me sexy - so let's move swiftly on.

SSS

Facebook Phishing / Hacking / Scams

SSS reveals that lots of Facebook users and social network enthusiasts are worried about their Facebook account being hacked, phished or falling victim to any scams. My blog gets a lot of visitors because of a blog post I wrote uncovering a Facebook Phishing page.

If people are worried about Facebook phishing scams you should ensure you're using a browser with built-in fraud protection, and always check the URL of the login page before hitting submit on those precious login details!

Xbox 360 Towel Trick / Gamertags / Windows Live Passport

Following hot on the heels of Facebook Phishing comes lots of eager gamers trying to find out how to solve problems with their Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles. Right now I could probably adopt my own advice as my second Xbox 360 has just flashed it's red ring of death and refused to be used.

For the addicted gamer, desperate to get their gameplay fix, The Towel Trick is a temporary DIY solution to this problem. The Towel Trick is a method of wrapping a bath towel around your console in an attempt to fix the unit and restore it's gameplay abilities. The idea surfaced on the web and has become a popular resolution method - however, if you are having problems with your 360, it's no way a permanent solution and I recommend getting a replacement console.

The second Xbox 360 related issue that people are searching for is the link between your Xbox Live Gamertag and Windows Live Passport. The problem is that once you've connected a Windows Live Passport to your 360, you cannot change it - which posed problems when Microsoft introduced the Messenger features to Xbox Live - and everyone realised the passport they had tied to their console was not the one they used for their Windows Live Messenger.

The latter of these two problems is described in a long-winded and probably ultimately confusing blog post by myself. If you want a solution; the only option at the time was to delete your gamertag and your Windows Live Passport and start over. This wasn't an ideal solution and so many people complained that Major Nelson posted on his blog that there would be a way around this in future - according to a blog comment, this issue has been resolved.

Virb 2

SSS shows that social networking is popular. You'd think that for people that spend so much time sitting in front of their computer, not interacting with people face-to-face, that socialising would be so high upon their agenda. But, along with Facebook's popularity, it seems most people are eagerly anticipating the release of Virb 2.

The original build of Virb established itself as a social network for those who have a little more style, class and finesse to be using MySpace - yet retains the same basic features that a social network requires to be social - plus added little extras, like VirbTunes which would track what music you're playing in a Last.fm style. The site comes off the back of PureVolume, which was the original project of the Virb team.

Virb 2 has been in development for possibly far too long. The staff have been working long and hard on it, and it's currently in private beta with a launch imminent. Unfortunately, I'm not part of the private beta and so know nothing about the new version; you can follow progress on the Virb Twitter profile.

SSS

Last.fm Mobile

Following on the trend of social networks, SSS reveals that there are lots of people who want to find Last.fm related stuff; mostly applications for scrobbling tracks from their mobile phone, or streaming tracks from Last.fm to their mobile phones.

Last.fm Build, a new section to Last.fm, showcases a whole range of third-party developer applications. There you will find a range of applications that will allow streaming and scrobbling to and from your Windows Mobile device, Blackberry, S60, iPhone and more. I personally used to use Pocket Scrobbler for Windows Mobile devices, but have moved onto Mobbler for my Nokia N95 8GB - the latest build of both apps supports scrobbling from the phone's media player, and also streaming Last.fm Radio to the phone.

Everything Else

Search Engines

The most popular search engine was Google, followed by Google UK, Google Canada, Google Turkey, Google India, Google France, Google Australia, Google Germany and then Yahoo!. Seven more Google countries later we reach Microsoft Live Search and then AOL, but not before another seven Google countries.

You Googlers should be ashamed of yourself! This just backs up my claims of Google knowing too much and being used too much. Granted, they are a bit good; but it would be awesome if people used other search engines like Yahoo!, Clusty or Ask too. I've been using Ask for the past few weeks; it looks good visually, but the results aren't always accurate. Clusty and Yahoo! are generally spot-on however, with Yahoo!'s results being pretty much identical to what you'd see on Google. Give it a try - change the way you search!

Countries

Slightly different to what you'd expect after looking at search engine usage, most visitors were from the USA (23.4%), closely followed by the United Kingdom (19.81%), with Egypt, Russia and India making up the top five. Norway (1.22%) came 14th and Lithuania (0.43%) came 36th.

Time

Whilst most people spent less than 1 minute on the site (84.49%), more people spent 5-10 minutes (1.94%) or 10-15 minutes (1.01%) reading my posts than those that spent 3 or 4 minutes (0.57%) on the site. The less than 1 minute is expected; but it is somewhat comforting to know that people will read my posts, even if they're not leaving comments.

Most Visited Blog Post

Thanks to EspenAO posting the story on the front page of Opera Community, my most popular blog post for the month of September 2008 was the 'Blog This' post, relating to the photo blogging feature on Flickr.

Number of Visitors

For the month of September, my blog received 3,880 unique visitors. With a total of 6,267 page views, this means that each visitor viewed 1.62 pages.

Browser Stats

I'm not entirely sure these browser stats are sampled uniquely from my blog; but possibly more a general overview of Opera Community. Regardless, Internet Explorer still takes hold of the browser market at 32.02%, but closely followed by Mozilla Firefox at 29.58%. Opera Web Browser comes in third place with 14.21%, followed by Opera Mini at 13.71% - a combined result of 27.92%, which still doesn't knock Firefox off the second spot.

Search Terms

Whilst I've already ran through the most popular search terms there were plenty of humorous or interesting queries. I'll close by running through a few of these:

  • love note, post-it, post-it love
My blog post 'Post-It Love Note' shows a cool little note that I found about a year ago.

Opera 9.6 Released (The Other Day)

, , , ...

Opera 9.6 Logo and Screenshot

If you're reading this you probably know me, and that I'm a big fan of Opera (the application, not the music). I ramble on all the time about how good Opera is as a company and how I think everyone should use their products - but nobody really listens to me. In fact, considering how much I talk about it, very few of my friends actually have bothered to take my advice... but those that have feel like they've benefited. Mostly.

The other day seen the release of Opera 9.6. Anyone who cares about such a release would've downloaded the latest version already from opera.com/download/ - but if you haven't, read on.

Here's some good reasons why you should download Opera - even if you don't care about web browsers or anything to do with your computer, I bet there's a convincing arguement listed below:

Coxy's Reasons to Download Opera

  • Better than Internet Explorer
If you access the internet using the blue 'e' icon you can be considered a bad, bad person. Internet Explorer is made by Microsoft and comes with your Windows computer - and it's this very reason that most virus/security risks are aimed at Internet Explorer. If you value your security (ie, bank details, passwords, etc) - get a better browser.
  • You're using / thinking about Firefox?
Mozilla Firefox is the browser that most Internet Explorer users are switching to. If you've heard of another web browser, it's probably Firefox. Whilst Firefox is undoubtably better than Internet Explorer, for most users to make the browser do what they want it to, they have to hunt down and install 'Add Ons' making Firefox slower and more cumbersome. Most of Firefox's popular plugins come built-in as standard with Opera. It's well known that most of Firefox's new features are existing features in Opera.
  • Speed Dial
Opening a new tab or window in Opera provides you with shortcuts to your favourite websites. If you're a socialite, you can be a mere click away from Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Flickr and your other favourite social networks - there'd be no need to type urls!
  • Opera Link
Connect your browser to your free Opera Link account and Opera will back-up and sync your bookmarks, speed dial, notes, personal toolbar, search engine preferences and typed history. When you log in at school, work, on any other computer or mobile phone, you have instant access to all your data - and any changes you make away from your computer will still be there when you get home. Get in sync, get a better browser.
  • Zoooooooooom!
Opera zooms pages like no other browser. Seriously. Where other browsers will only zoom the text on the page, Opera zooms everything with the touch of the plus or minus keys. Save your eyes, zoom when reading long articles or small type.
  • Login with Magic
The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Return becomes your friend! Pressing it (or the magic wand button) magically logs you into your favourite sites - or fills out long forms for you - so long as you've saved that information previous. Login to pretty much any site and hit 'Save' when prompted and you'll never have to remember your username and password again!
  • Find Anything!
Opera comes suited and booted with the latest search engines; Google, Yahoo!, Ask and more. You can also search your history by typing in the address bar. If you can't remember the name of that lolcats site you were visiting, but remember seeing the word 'kitten' on the page, type away and Opera will find it for you. No other browser searches every word on every page you've visited! What's more - you can add any search box on pretty much any web page into your browser by simply right-clicking on it. Another good reason to get a better browser.
  • Ultimate Protection
Opera comes with Fraud, Malware and Phishing protection built-in as standard. Every site you visit is checked against a list of known phishing or fraudulent site to ensure your computer's not going to get infected with any spyware or viruses and that you're not giving your bank details away to a fake website.

To be honest, I could go on - but I'll stop now. There are so many good reasons to give Opera a try; even if you're happy with Firefox or just don't give a crap about web browsers - at the end of the day it'll ensure you're safe from nasty things on the web, or that you're browsing that little bit faster.

If one person came up to me after reading this and said "I read you blog, I downloaded Opera.", I'd be happy for the rest of the day!

Download and installation is free, quick and easy. Opera works on Windows, Mac and Linux... your mobile, your Nintendo Wii, your Nintendo DS and a handful of other devices. Just click the button:

The Dark Knight

, , , ...

As other people are leaving Opera Community, some are returning. After a long time of not posting anything personal here, and more than a month of not posting anything music-related here, I'm coming back for more Opera Community action. I tried setting up my own eggblog, I moved to Pownce and nothing could replace this blogging service. So, I'm back.

Anyways, on Thursday, Vikki and I went to see previews of The Dark Knight on IMAX and it was absolutely amazing! Seriously - go see it at the cinema, in IMAX - it's worth it.

The Old Romantic Killer Band

, , , ...

photo of coxy holding the single on cd and 7 inch vinyl

I need to blog more. I need to post more photos too. And buying music is always good. So let's combine the lot into one concise little blog post. So, here's a picture of me, taken by me, holding some music. I'm also blogging using Flock, as you'll see at the bottom of this blog post (because I've let it invade my posts with links) - but I'm still using Opera at work. Flock is more of a social thing.

In my hands are the latest thing to drop through my letterbox this morn; it's the new release from The Old Romantic Killer Band called 'You Don't Know How To Love'. I'm pretty sure it was released on Monday and I snatched a copy up for myself from Piccadilly Records. It's available as a CD and on 7" vinyl - they sell the thing on Amazon too, but it's more expensive there.

Check out the band's MySpace and see if you like them, and if you do, spend £1.99 on the single. It'll be worth it.

I did notice on the back of the single it says that someone called Ross Hall is playing drums, whereas their MySpace lists the drummer as being 'Greg'. I've always known the drummer to be 'Bunse' - so there's something going on here. There's been no official word, but I think Bunse has left / been kicked from the band, which can't be a good thing. I'm trying to find out, but the band are over at SXSW Festival right now, so I'll update folk who are interested in the comments.

Day 03: Opera HQ

, , ,

The third day of the holiday and the first Monday was set to be a good one; we were due a trip to Opera HQ and were being given a tour by Espen. No doubt this was also the day that Opera Community members want to hear most about, but probably the day that I took the least pictures (I have none from inside the offices).

It was good to be there though. On arrival Vikki and I were taken round the place and explored people's offices, meeting a whole bunch of people who work there (some familiar, some new faces). We were then taken through to a separate room where Bent showed us some cool new secret stuff in Opera Mini and we talked about how the application could be improved.

After that, we were taken through to the infamous Opera Canteen where dish of the day appeared to be Jacket Potato. I never imagined that the food in the canteen was free - what a great benefit of working for the company - I wish I got free dinners at work.

At dinner I got to give nicomen some postcards that we'd talked about the past week on IRC. He said they could act as a bribe (jokingly, of course), leading to a faster implementation of bug #473 AutoSave.

After tucking into some food, Espen took us to meet the Opera Community team. As expected, we got around to discussing #473, but that wasn't quite my intention of visiting. It was good to meet the people who build the community and see the faces behind the site that I use.

From there, Vikki and I each had our photos taken and got some Opera Employee cards made. This meant we were technically no longer walking around on our guest passes and were officially unpaid Opera employees for all of the next half an hour. Yay!

Thomas Ford then gave us a quick day-early run-through of the Kestral Alpha and then Espen set us free to explore the rest of Oslo.

Day 03: Cemetery Day 03: Cemetery

Exploring the rest of Oslo comprised of taking a walk through a local cemetery on the way home, walking around the shops at Oslo City (urgh, busy shopping centre) and then getting some food later that night at the Hard Rock Cafe (mmm, good food).

I'm now two days behind on blogging, but you'll still find pictures on my Flickr account.
