Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (RC, 64-bit)

, , , , ,

I just installed Windows 7 to my desktop at home. The first thing I did was download Opera 10, followed by Songbird. The default background is of a fish which is not too dissimilar to Maria Hammond's guppy.

The installation was soooo easy, and really quite painless. The operating system seems good so far - and fast. Let's see how it goes. Hopefully I can get Adobe Photoshop working in this far better than it was in Ubuntu - and then I can get on with making Luke Leighfield and Mike TV a website each.

Oh, and I've started using Ask UK again. All this talk of Microsoft's Bing made me want to try something different. Like I said, time for a change.

I did a quick search for this last night but didn't immediately see anything about it. Is Windows 7 using WinFS or did MS scrap it? And if 7 doesn't use WinFS, what file system *does* it use?

Charles SchlossChas4 Thursday, June 4, 2009 3:43:30 AM

hows a beta on an RC?

Matt Coxcoxy Thursday, June 4, 2009 7:41:49 AM

BAMAToNE Both the HDs were formatted NTFS - if that's what you mean. If it's not what you mean, I have no idea what you're on about. bigsmile

Chas4 Good. I'm impressed by both Opera 10 and Windows 7. I haven't really used Vista for more than 5 mins but have heard lots of bad things about it, so pretty pleased that I got to miss that OS and am on 7 now.

sorinste-ven Thursday, June 4, 2009 5:20:41 PM

i need a new computer for it, so, it will wait (my home comp)
MS works a lot for the computer manufacturers, it seems

CharlieBAMAToNE Friday, June 5, 2009 4:19:22 AM

NTFS - that's what I was asking. smile

Andrew Nguyenandrewnguyen Friday, June 5, 2009 1:25:45 PM

Hm, W7 is still using NTFS? sherlock Well, I guess I'll be having Jkdefrag installed still, routine defragging. p

But, as good as I've heard Windows 7 is, I probably won't mind.

Charles SchlossChas4 Friday, June 5, 2009 2:08:02 PM

Vista does have Windows Defrag auto defrag the system (It is on a schedule)

beautifulthing Friday, June 5, 2009 8:01:59 PM

coxy try cuil.com
or stick with ask.com
i like both engines

Win 7 already? In that beta state - you seem to have quite a lot of time. wink
I would've to upgrade my PC for Win7 and will stick to Linux therefore.

Charles SchlossChas4 Friday, June 5, 2009 8:06:40 PM

beautiful_thing Windows 7 is in the RC state and the browser Opera 10 is in the beta 1 state

Agreed. bigsmile

Windows 7 is set to be released in the Netherlands on October 22nd.

Matt Coxcoxy Friday, June 5, 2009 10:26:47 PM

beautiful_thing I tried Cuil when it was first released and wasn't very impressed. I tend to switch what I'm using quite often; usually between Yahoo! Search, Clusty and Ask.

Clusty is really good and brings back some pretty good results - I like it. But Ask has a fresher, cleaner look.

beautifulthing Sunday, June 7, 2009 5:05:01 PM

Coxy

I tried clusty

Fast loading and with some interesting results.

I also use www.ixquick.com

since they don’t store my IP
and former searches and so on (just like www.cuil.com

Chas4 and Southern Cross,

I’m aware that MS states that Win7 is in RC state. But since I had to reboot my Win XP
computer because the mouse driver died (it’s MS driver, so it should work)
before I could post this I’m not so sure whether XP is in a final state. Never
tried VISTA and on my own PC I use Linux. On
Win, I ever so often have problems with programmes that won’t update. I have
several software zombies on my system which are still up and running but can’t
be deleted / removed / uninstalled. And why is this? Just because my company
tries to keep the system up-to-date and installs all recommended updates….

Charles SchlossChas4 Sunday, June 7, 2009 5:19:52 PM

beautiful_thing does your company know that some malware can track every thing you do on your computer? They do have driver updates under Custom on the Windows Update page

beautifulthing Sunday, June 7, 2009 5:29:03 PM

Chas4,

I hope so. We use HP's radia to install all stuff for Windows. The IT guys even try to make a first site installation on a very small number of PC before the rest of us get the update.

Outcome of this: Every other week outlook will not receive any mails at all. I can send but not receive. I LOVE bigsmile these days. Uninterrupted work for hours. The IT guys are now looking for a remedy for month now. I know, that I'm not the only one....

The prices where announced/leaked not long ago. It actually seems like upgrading from Vista won't be that expensive!

Ubuntunerd ☠ubuntunerd1 Monday, June 8, 2009 6:05:33 PM

I love the GUI but thats about it smile

Matt Coxcoxy Tuesday, June 9, 2009 9:51:07 AM

Aleksander Hurrah! I don't have Vista though. sad I might just buy a new PC by then; I found out my computer only has 1GB of RAM. Need moar (and am going to use it as an excuse to buy a whole new computer instead of just upgrade my RAMzing)

ubuntunerd1 With a username like that, I'm surprised you even like the GUI. p

CharlieBAMAToNE Tuesday, June 9, 2009 6:23:15 PM

Refresh my memory... When you buy an "upgrade," all that means is you have to supply the install disc of the previous OS, right? Then the new OS will allow you wipe a partition and install from scratch? Like it won't force you to do a real "upgrade" install?

Ubuntunerd ☠ubuntunerd1 Wednesday, June 10, 2009 12:11:49 AM

I have like The GUI since vista in fact I own a couple of windows pc's but of course Linux is my thing.

check out this post I made about making Ubuntu look like windows7, I made it just because I love the windows7 GUI:

You need to have a genuine version of Windows Vista I think. Either by having a registered copy or by running the Windows Genuine tool or what it's called..

sorinste-ven Sunday, June 14, 2009 3:06:35 AM

yes, the new win os will erase everything (on a win partition)
It happened to me, always, no matter if the os was genuine or not !

Danny Bluestonemesibot Friday, June 19, 2009 9:08:37 PM

Is it good/fast with design software and games?

Matt Coxcoxy Sunday, June 21, 2009 9:38:31 PM

I haven't tried the OS with any games; but it seems to struggle running a load of apps at once (especially when Photoshop is open). I think this has more to do with my measly 1GB of RAM as opposed to anything else, though.

bigeyes bigeyes bigeyes @Chas4 do you believe them ?

Charles SchlossChas4 Monday, June 22, 2009 5:14:30 AM

not sure but it would be funny if it worked as I think Microsoft worked on performance in WIndows 7 unlike Vista
