NIPA Round 3, Portraiture - 17 Nov 2009

Tonight we had the judging of NIPA round 3, portraiture.

Our judge for the evening was Hugh Russell from CBPPU.

Hugh gave a fair and detailed judging spending time to give important feedback on every print.

Hugh gave many valuable tips on how to light the subject and how to keep the background dark, out of focus and unobtrusive.

Congratulations to Vittorio who took the honours in the mono section, Brian Bennett in the colour and Paul Kavanagh in the PDI's.

Many thanks Hugh.

Portraiture, Jim Maginn - 3rd Nov 2009

Tonight we had Jim Maginn from The University of Ulster at the club.

Jim spoke about his passion for portraiture and in particular the decisive moment.

He began the evening with a look at some of his self portraits and continued by showing some of his own private family portraits.

Jim's message was clear, shoot what appeals to you and not what appeals to the judge. Record personal memories as they are irreplaceable.

See Jims work on his website at the following link Jim Maginn

Many thanks to Jim for a very interesting evening.

Thank also to Jim McKeever for arranging this.

Old Ballynahinch, Charlie Rutledge - 3rd Nov 2009

This evening due to popular demand we had Charlie Rutledge from Ballynahinch camera club back to give his presentation on Old Ballynahinch.

Charlie had been at the club last year judging the Irish Heritage competition and gave us a taster of the show to wet our appetites.

Charlie showed us some fantastic traditional slides which he had restored from glass plates. He finished with some digitally projected images which were of similar quality.

Many thanks Charlie.

Digital Workshop, Ernie Patterson - 27th Oct 2009

Ernie's first digital workshop of the season was on the 27th October.

We had just purchased a new digital projector, and Ernie concentrated his talk on issues relating the projection of our PDI's on competition nights.

After the break he calibrated the projector to his laptop. Even though the un-calibrated projector was significantly better the Morton Centres projector, after calibration the projected image was significantly better displaying a good range of tones in the mono images.

Thanks Ernie.

NIPA Round 2 Competition, Open - 20th October 2009

Round 2 - Open, Large Prints

Tuesday night was the second round of the NIPA inter-club competition. This round was open themed but entrants were allowed to make use o f images and mounts up to 50cm*40cm.

The larger permitted image size led to a number of excellent and inspiring prints to be entered.

Judging duties were performed by Newtownards own Leslie Armour . Leslies judging was excellent, with time given to each print and valuable feedback provided for all levels of photographer.

Leslie spent time talking about the importance of having good ranges of tone and texture within images. He also give good advice about the 3 chances a photographer gets to get the shot right - Capture, Post processing and mounting - reminding the club that a well mounted shot goes a long way towards helping an image really shine.

Practical Night - 13th Oct 2009

Tonight we had our first practical night of the year. We were fortunate to have a pretty model for the night. Christine sat for almost 2 hours and never complained once. She had several changes of clothes with her which made for some very interesting photos.

Thanks to Gordon for taking charge of the lights, using some lighting techniques which followed on from his talk in September.

Many thanks to Christine for helping us out.

Irish Heritage, Club Competition - 06th Oct 2009

The Irish Heritage Club Competition for the Roland Bainbridge memorial trophy, took place this evening. Our judge was John Belshaw from Shorts Camera Club.

John had 29 prints to judge, a great entry from the members. There was a mixture of colour and monochrome images which made his task even more difficult. He gave a fair, constructive comment on every print.

After tea John narrowed down his selection and awarded first place to Ray Arnold for his print titled "Riley's Place and Gasometers". The Roland Bainbridge memorial trophy was presented to Ray by our judge John Belshaw.

Congratulations Ray and many thanks John.

Lighting for Portraiture - 29th Sep 2009, Gordon Johnston

With one of this year's NIPA competitions, round 3 begin Portraiture, the committee thought it would be useful for the members to have some guidance on how to be creative with "Lighting for Portraiture".

We asked our own Gordon Johnston if he would give us talk on the subject.

We connected Gordon's camera to a laptop and projected the results of the shoot onto a screen via a digital projector so the members could see the subtle differences that changing the lights made.

Gordon started with one light, to simulate window light and used a reflector to fill in the shadows. He progressed to 2 and 3 lights but it was clear that the most simple and dramatic effect was achieved from one light.

Many thanks to Gordon and his model Kelly for what everyone thought was an interesting and informative evening.

Islands of the South Pacific - 22nd Sep 2009, David Boyd

Tonight we had our own David Boyd talk to us about the Islands of the South Pacific.

David was to give us this presentation last year but was unable to as he was out of the country.

We rescheduled him for this year and we were not disappointed. He showed us many wonderful slides of Mount Cook and Fiji. David spoke with passion and his knowledge on the subject was amazing. His talk was extremely interesting.

Many thanks David.
