NIPA Round 1 Competition, Open - 15th September 2009

Tuesday night was the first round of the 2009/2010 NIPA competition. The theme of the round was "Open". It was also the first time that projected digital images (PDI) made an appearance as an official round.

The club was well represented by advanced photographers in all three rounds, though sadly novice users were not as prolific. The club presented 16 mono images for judgement and 27 digital images, the count of the colour images was missed in the excitement of the judging!

Taking the judging duties was Bob Given from the Ballynahinch club. Bob approached all three rounds openly, providng excellent critique and tips for improvement on each photograph as well as providing some general insight into things to try. Heis feedback was honest and fair.

Bob commented he was with us as part of a prisoner exchange with us sending Vittorio to judge a later round for them. Hopefully Vittorio will give as good a performance!

Chairman's Welcome - Sep 2009

I would like to welcome all members back to the CPA for our new year starting in September. I would like to thank the Committee for putting together what we hope members find an interesting programme and those involved in arranging the printing and distribution of it. I am sure your cameras have been exercised more than mine and I look forward to seeing the results in the monthly competitions.

So inspired by the programme talks and challenged by the competitions I look forward to seeing you all, existing and new members, on Tuesday nights at Morton Community Centre.

The opening night is September 1st and after a welcome back, we shall familiarize all members particularly the new faces with the programme, competitions, lectures, practical nights and outings (see below). This will be followed by the usual refreshments and socialising. The programme proper will start in earnest the following Tuesday. It may be a short night. You may have time to take some photographs afterwards so it may be an idea to bring your camera.

W. J. Jefferson
Chairman CPA.

Club Outing - Killyleagh Regatta, Sat 25th July

As predicted the outing to Portaferry/Killyleagh was a great success.

5 club members as well as Peter Knott from City of Belfast CC and Jonathan Clarke from Shorts CC enjoyed one of the hottest and brightest days we've had for several weeks.

We hired a boat to get close to the action of the Killyleagh Regatta and the photographic opportunities were amazing thanks to the skilful piloting of Dessy Rodgers the captain.

We spent 3 hours on Strangford Lough during which Dessy manoeuvred his boat so we got shots of the yachts from every perceivable angle. Many thanks Dessy.

We finish the day with a very nice cup of tea and cake at Brian's caravan. Thanks Angela.

May 19th - Club Competitions, Outings & Practical Nights

Tonight was the judging of the annual competitions for the best shot taken on a practical night for the Agnew trophy donated to the club by John Agnew and the best shot taken on a club outing for the Moucka shield donated to the club by Ladislav Moucka.

Our judge for this evening was our own John Hill.

John decided to involve the members by getting everyone to score the prints from 1 to 5, just to see how they compared to his scoring.

It was a successful idea with lots of interaction between the members.

John select a print of Stormont by Vittorio Silvestri for his best among the club outing shots.

For the best print taken on the practical nights John selected another one of Vittorio's prints.

Congratulations to Vittorio and many thanks to John Hill for the judging.

May 12th - Print Battle, CPA vs City of Belfast

This evening we had our annual print battle with the City of Belfast camera club.

It was our turn to host the event and welcome all the members from the City of Belfast CC who come along.

We agreed that to allow for a little bit of member interaction that we would display one print at a time, the only rule being that it had to be colour against colour or monochrome against monochrome.

Our judge for this evening was Peter Wilkin from Ballynahinch camera club. He agreed to the format of judging.

Peter managed to comment on 48 prints in the time we had, 24 from each club, approx 12 colour & 12 B&W.

Only 2 points separated the clubs after the first 12 had been judged.

At the end of the night the final score was as follows:

CPA 177 & City of Belfast 162.

Many thanks to Peter for his hard work and to the members of the City of Belfast CC for coming along to the CPA.

We look forward to a rematch next year.

April 28th - My ARPS Panel Award, Hugh Rooney

This evening we had Hugh Rooney ARPS from Bangor and North Down CC at the club.

Hugh presented his ARPS panel to the members and commented on each of the 15 prints in turn explaining what he was trying to portray.

This was a full monochrome panel of exceptional quality.

Hugh took questions from members giving full comprehensive answers.

After tea Hugh talked about the many different types of papers and inks he has had the experience of working with. He passed around several prints printed on different types of paper for us to compare.

Many thanks to Hugh for such an enjoyable evening.

Thanks to Brian Bennett for supplying the images for this Blog.

April 7th - Club Competition, Flora and Fauna

Tonight we had our annual Flora & Fauna completion.

Our judge for the evening was Brian McKenna.

Brian had the unenviable task of judging 42 prints, a fantastic entry which we should be proud of.

As always Brian gave his comments on all the prints, explaining how the prints could be improved whenever he thought possible.

He narrowed down his choice to a final 20 prints and after tea he named his top five prints.

Congratulations once again to Brian Bennett, who took the honours with a terrific shot of a robin.

Many Thanks to Brian McKenna.
