www.maggot.tvAfter 22 years of working on commercial films of every type and size of budget, hair care, cars, biscuits, alcohol, cigarettes, all sorts and hearing every kind of crap creative pitch, as well as some good ones, the thing that struck me was that even though commercials are considered the rolls royce of the film making business, when you actually look under the bonnet its full of crap parts and dodgey scripts with designers who very rarely agree on how the thing should look, each and every person knows what's better, from the catering person to jo bloggs.
On any given day many commercial film makers wish they were working on something thats more worthy, a better idea, a better budget, a better location in short we always think we can do better than what we are doing right now.
If only there was a decent Budget.
Me included.
I don't find it easy to laugh at myself and the obsessions that drive me.
I spend my days thinking of images that will never be seen, writing words to explain these images that are rejected or not understood, I have made complete feature films in my head that will never see the light of day let alone distribution.
I watch other peoples work and wish I had thought of that and at the same time know I will not be able to make it now as its been done.
A little bit on Director's, we are the men and women with the vision of what ever it is that needs to be made.
We take a commercial concept and visualize/realize it, make it real, make it different, make it award winning
make it cheaply.... make the compromise, and possibly make it up as we go along.
Then we take the praise and quiet often the flak.
"The producers" well they usually make the money.
Anyway I have decided to make some changes.
My new approach is "if there is no budget there are no limitations".
Its beg and borrow to get it done.
Amazingly it seems to be working.
After years of complaining about the budget, its absolutly amazing what you can make for no budget or at least very little, you still have to pay for the food......
