Practical information when moving to Munich

Registering at the unemployment center as looking for a job - they will help you find a job regardless of whether or not you receive unemployment benefits from the government (NOTE: if you want to apply for social benefits you should do that first (see below) and ask at the Sozialbürgerhäuser how to apply as looking for a job). If you are not applying for social benefits and just want help finding a job:
  1. Go to the KVR to register as a resident in Germany (if you are from the European Union you will only need to bring your ID card) - since your there you can ask also for the paper in step (C)
  2. Go to the arbeitsamt and register as looking for a job. You will need:
  • The document you got on step (A)
  • Your CV
  • Reference Letters
  • Certificates / Diplomas
  • Your ID card
  • Fill out a paper they give you there

Apllying for a government sponsored german language course - the integration course lets you do the first 6 levels of german (until B3) for only 1€ a lesson:
C. Go to the KVR to get the Freizügigkeitsgesetz certificate (you only need your ID card if you belong to the European Union)
D. Go to the BAMF and deliver the paper (C) together with a paper they give you there, inside an envelope (you can also send everything by mail)

Apply for social benefits: Go to the Sozialbürgerhäuser - some notes:
  • Your are not entitled to unemployment benefit unless you were already receiving it in your country
  • If you live with someone their income will be considered when you apply for social benefits
  • To apply for unemployment II (minimum income) you need to be living in Germany for longer than 3 months

Health insurance:
  • Health insurance is necessary in Germany and not cheap (not less than 150€ a month). If you don't have medical insurance you have to pay all the medical expenses yourself even in public hospitals
  • The european health card is only valid for emergencies
  • Most drugs like the birth control pill require medical prescription in germany and the pharmacies won't sell you without one
  • If you are employed, your company pays half of your health insurance and the other half is taken off your salary
  • Unless you are receiving social benefits from the state or working, you have to do a health insurance on your own and pay privately with no help even if your are unemployed
  • If you don't have insurance you can go to some voluntary hospitals in Munich such as Café 104 and MMM

Note: In most places, like the KFR and the arbeitsamt they are nor allowed to speak english so it will help having someone with you who speaks german. For more information check the advice center closest to you

Personalize your keyboard

To add characters to your keyboard without changing its layout you can use Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator.
I built a very simple one. Using the portuguese keyboard layout i added the following german characters:
  • ä = ALT GR + A
  • ü = ALT GR + U
  • ß = ALT GR + S

pt-de2.klc - My source file. To use it, in the program click file - open source file - choose mine - you can make the changes you want or keep it the way it is - then click in project - test - test your carachters - click again in project - validate - check the log for errors - click in project - Build DLL and setup package - it will create a setup file for you to install - after instalation go to your regional computer preferences - change the keyboard to the new one.

You can also open an existing keyboard layout instead of mine, change it and save it with another name.

Although not very user friendly, you can check some character codes on this page, the site lets you choose by country characters and you just have to check the code for the key where that character is in that country's keyboard. Some characters codes are also in the program's help files.

Alterar os programas de arranque no Windows 7

1) Click the Windows "Start" button and type "msconfig" in the search text box. This opens the System Configuration console.

2) Click the "Startup" tab. This gives you a view of all the programs installed as startup options on your computer.

3) Check boxes of the applications you want to start when you boot the computer. For programs you no longer want to start, clear the check box.

As entregas pela Internet da declaração de IRS de trabalho dependente terminam a 30/04/2011.

Preenche o quadro 9 do anexo H => 0,5% do imposto que pagas vai para uma instituição de solidariedade social em vez de ir para o Estado. 500883823 é o número da Unicef. Podes ver os outros números aqui

Deduções (isto é, custos que podes abater para não teres que pagar tanto IRS ou para o Estado te devolver parte do IRS que já pagaste ao longo do ano quando recebeste os salários) preenchem-se no quadro 7 do anexo H (nota: se são de entidades portuguesas não é preciso preencher as colunas país nem nº fiscal da UE)
  • entregas para PPRs - código 701
  • despesas educação e reabilitação - código 706
  • seguros de vida - código 707 ou 729
  • fundos de pensões - código 711
  • donativos - códigos 715 a 728, 734 e 735
  • seguros de saúde - código 730
  • prestação da casa - códigos 731 e 732
  • entregas para o Regime Público de Capitalização ("PPR" do Estado) - código 733
  • reabilitação de imóveis - código 736
  • encargos com lares - código 737
  • energias renováveis/eficiência energética/veículos não poluentes - códigos 738 a 740


Despesas de saúde e educação (quadro 8 do anexo H):
  • código 801 - despesas saúde isentas de IVA ou sujeitas à taxa reduzida de 6%
  • código 802 - despesas saúde sujeitas a IVA à taxa normal com receita médica
  • código 803 - despesas educação e formação profissional

  • nota 1: sendo um fundo de acções, tem uma volatilidade elevada. Em termos simplistas, um nível de volatilidade elevado a 1 ano significa que no último ano a rendibilidade diária variou muito acima e abaixo da rendibilidade média diária. Isto é, embora em média o fundo tenha subido por exemplo 0,03% ao dia, houve dias em que poderá ter subido por exemplo 5% e dias em que terá caído 5%.
  • nota 2: sendo um fundo sectorial o risco de perda é superior ao de um fundo de acções diversificado uma vez que além do risco de mercado, tem também o risco especifico do sector. Isto é, em termos simplistas, num fundo de acções diversificado (que segue, por exemplo, o Eurostoxx 50) existe o risco de perda associado às quedas do mercado accionista como um todo. Um fundo sectorial, não só está sujeito às notícias que afectam o mercado accionista como um todo, mas também às noticiais que afectam o sector em causa. Assim, é possível que num dado dia, por exemplo, o sector tecnológico caia 5% e o mercado accionista feche positivo em 2% porque as subidas nos restantes sectores compensaram essa queda. Parvest European Convertible Bond – mínimo de subscrição = 121€ - fundo de obrigações convertíveis
  • Uma obrigação é uma espécie de empréstimo que fazemos a uma empresa. Exemplo de investimento em 100 obrigações (com Valor nominal de 1€) cotada a 98% com um cupão de 2% e maturidade em Dezembro de 2015: eu empresto 98€ (98%*100*1€) à empresa e ela todos os anos vai-me pagar 2€ (2%*100*1€) e daqui a 5 anos vai-me pagar 100€ (100%*100*1€)+ 2€ (cupão desse ano).
  • Uma obrigação convertível é uma obrigação que tem o "bónus" de me deixar trocá-la por acções da empresa. Assim, quando o mercado accionista sobe, este "bónus" torna-se cada vez mais valioso, e o valor da obrigação convertível sobe. As obrigações convertíveis permitem assim beneficiar das subidas do mercado accionista com ganhos limitados (uma vez que a empresa também tem o direito de converter as obrigações se o preço das acções subir demasiado) mas também com perdas limitadas (uma vez que, se a empresa não falir, na maturidade a obrigação vai pagar 100% mais o cupão desse ano).

Eat, Prey, Love - Elizabeth Gilbert

É baseado na história da autora. Gostei tanto deste livro que vou partilhar algumas das minhas frases preferidas.

Nova Iorque

Quando a história começa Liz vive em Nova Iorque, está casada e começa a sentir-se a sufocar e impotente:
  • "The only thing more unthinkable than leaving was staying, the only thing more impossible than staying was leaving. I didn’t want to destroy anything or anybody. I just wanted to slip quietly out the back door, without causing any fuss or consequences, and then not stop running until I reached Greenland.”
  • “Go back to bed’, said the omniscient interior voice, because you don’t need to know the final answer right now, at three o’clock in the morning on the Thursday in November. (...) ‘Go back to bed’, beacause the only thing you need to do for now is get some rest and take good care of yourself until you do know the answer.”

Decide então divorciar-se, o que acaba por ser um processo difícil:
  • "My guilt at having left him forbade me from thinking I should be allowed to keep even a dime of the money I'd made in the last decade. (...) essential to me that we not battle. So this was my position I would neither defend myself from him, nor would I fight him. For the longest time, against the counsel of all who cared about me, I resisted even consulting a lawyer, because I considered even that to be an act of war."
  • Uma amiga diz-lhe para fazer uma lista mental de todas as pessoas que assinariam uma petição imaginária para que tudo se resolvesse. " The names spilled from me (...) and I became filled with a grand sense of protection, surrounded by the collective goodwill of so many mighty souls. The list finally wound down, and my anxiety wound down with it."

Entretanto apaixona-se (por David), o que também acaba por correr mal:
  • "In desperate love, we always invent the characters of our partners, demanding they be what we need of them, and then feeling devastated when they refuse to perform the role we created in the first place. But, oh, we had such a great time together during those early months when he was still my romantic hero and I was still his living dream. It was excitement and compatibility like Iíd never imagined. A sua cabeça está cheia, a mil à hora, sente-se em baixo:
  • "That's the thing about human life - there's no control group, no way to ever know how any of us would have turned out if any variables had been changed."
  • "(...)offering me all the certainties I have always wished another person would say to me when I was troubled. This is what I find myself writing to myself on the page:"I’m here. I love you. I don’t care if you need to stay up crying all night long, I will stay with you. There’s nothing you can ever do to lose my love. Sendo escritora consegue que lhe paguem em adiantado para escrever um livro (este livro). Ela decide fazer uma viagem de um ano: 4 meses em Itália (comer), 4 meses na Índia (orar) e 4 meses na Indonésia (amar).

Itália (comer)

Em Itália Liz decide viver os prazeres da vida (maioritariamente comer p):
  • "My shaky sense of direction and geography means I have explored six continents in my life with only the vaguest idea of where I am at any given time."
  • "People asked me before I left for Italy, " Do you have friends in Rome?" and I would just shake my head no, thinking to myself, But I will."
  • "What would you like to do today, Liz? What would give you pleasure at this moment?"
  • "Podemos mudar de mulher (...), emprego, nacionalidade e até de religião, mas nunca podemos mudar de clube"
  • "But is it such a bad thing to live like this for just a little while? Just for a few months of one's life, is it so awful to(...)nap in a garden, in a patch of sunlight, in the middle of the day, right next to your favorite fountain? And then to do it again the next day"
  • "You were given life; it is your duty (and also your entitlement as a human being) to find something beautiful within life, no matter how slight."

E começa a sentir-se mais feliz:
  • “Dal centro della mia vita venne una grande fontana… (From the center of my life, there came a great fountain…)”
  • "Somewhere in me I am able to recognise that this is not my melancholy; this is the city’s own indigenous melancholy, and I am healthy enough these days to be able to feel the difference between me and it."

Índia (orar)

Eu não sou uma pessoa religiosa mas esta parte da viagem teve mais a ver com a autora se descobrir a ela própria e sentir-se em paz consigo mesmo.

Num ashram na Índia:
  • "You are, after all, what you think. Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions. The other problem with all this swinging through the vines of thought is that you are never where you are. You are always digging in the past or poking into the future, but rarely do you rest in the moment. It’s something like the habit of my dear friend Susan, who - whenever she sees a beautiful place - exclaims in near panic, ‘It’s so beautiful here! I want to come back here someday!’ and it takes all of my persuasive powers to try to convince her that she is already here.”

  • "'a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life (...) Há muito mais coisas. Identifiquei-me muito com este livro. Mais tarde se tiver paciência, partilho mais frases de que gostei neste livro, que realmente são muitas smile

Carros - Conversa entre um contribuinte e o Estado

Contribuinte - Gostava de comprar um carro.
Estado - Muito bem. Faça o favor de escolher.
Contribuinte - Já escolhi. Tenho que pagar alguma coisa?
Estado - Sim. Imposto sobre Automóveis (ISV) e Imposto sobre o Valor
Acrescentado (IVA)
Contribuinte - Ah... Só isso.
Estado - ... e uma "coisinha" para o pôr a circular. O selo.
Contribuinte - Ah!..
Estado - ... e mais uma coisinha na gasolina necessária para que o carro
efectivamente circule. O ISP.
Contribuinte - Mas... sem gasolina eu não circulo.
Estado - Eu sei.
Contribuinte - ... Mas eu já pago para circular...
Estado - Claro!..
Contribuinte - Então... vai cobrar-me pelo valor da gasolina?
Estado - Também. Mas isso é o IVA. O ISP é outra coisa diferente.
Contribuinte - Diferente?!
Estado - Muito. O ISP é porque a gasolina existe.
Contribuinte - ... Porque existe?!
Estado - Há muitos milhões de anos os dinossauros e o carvão fizeram
petróleo. E você paga.
Contribuinte - ... Só isso?
Estado - Só. Mas não julgue que pode deixar o carro assim como quer.
Contribuinte - Como assim?!
Estado - Tem que pagar para o estacionar.
Contribuinte - ... Para o estacionar?
Estado - Exacto.
Contribuinte - Portanto, pago para andar e pago para estar parado?
Estado - Não. Se quiser mesmo andar com o carro precisa de pagar seguro.
Contribuinte - Então pago para circular, pago para conseguir circular
e pago por estar parado.
Estado - Sim. Nós não estamos aqui para enganar ninguém. O carro é novo?
Contribuinte - Novo?
Estado - É que se não for novo tem que pagar para vermos se ele está
em condições de andar por aí.
Contribuinte - Pago para você ver se pode cobrar?
Estado - Claro. Acha que isso é de borla? Só há mais uma coisinha...
Contribuinte - ...Mais uma coisinha?
Estado - Para circular em auto-estradas
Contribuinte - Mas... mas eu já pago imposto de circulação.
Estado - Pois. Mas esta é uma circulação diferente.
Contribuinte - ... Diferente?
Estado - Sim. Muito diferente. É só para quem quiser.
Contribuinte - Só mais isso?
Estado - Sim. Só mais isso.
Contribuinte - E acabou?
Estado - Sim. Depois de pagar os 25 euros, acabou.
Contribuinte - Quais 25 euros?!
Estado - Os 25 euros que custa pagar para andar nas auto-estradas.
Contribuinte - Mas não disse que as auto-estradas eram só para quem quisesse?
Estado - Sim. Mas todos pagam os 25 euros.
Contribuinte - Quais 25 euros?
Estado - Os 25 euros é quanto custa o chip.
Contribuinte - ... Custa o quê?
Estado - Pagar o chip. Para poder pagar.
Contribuinte - Não perc...
Estado - Sim. Pagar custa 25 euros.
Contribuinte - Pagar custa 25 euros?
Estado - Sim. Paga 25 euros para pagar.
Contribuinte - Mas eu não vou circular nas auto-estradas.
Estado - Imagine que um dia quer...tem que pagar.
Contribuinte - Tenho que pagar para pagar porque um dia posso querer?
Estado - Exactamente. Você paga para pagar o que um dia pode querer.
Contribuinte - E se eu não quiser?
Estado - Paga multa.
