We have to read china daily every week since we have our selective reading course. And the time our teacher went to Hong Kong, he brought us south china morning post. Now we have two newspapers to read, which are so different to each other. Here are some of my feelings after reading them.
I’ve read china daily for 2 months, to be honest; I don’t like it that much. It seems to be a little boring to me. I am not that kind of people who always want those ‘exciting’ news and use newspaper as my pastime. But china daily sometimes is just a little bit too boring to read. On its first page, what you always read is the leader of the government as you always watch on cctv1. And also in other pages, what you read is some kind of national news. It seems that they are more concern about the national affairs. But the coverage of the national news is not in depth as I expected. The news is just news, no research, and no background. I expected to read some reports made in depth and also in English. If I want to know what happened around the country, I could read other newspapers and get a lot more useful information.
Besides, china daily represents the attitude and the interests of the government, reading it is kind of like reading People’s daily, English edition. Maybe foreigners would like to read it, but as a Chinese who live in mainland, I expect more, not only the news on the surface. In a word, china daily is a bit boring to read, but as my homework, I will keep reading it, plus it helps me improve my reading speed a lot. That’s the thing I want to thank it.
Now come to south china morning post (as morning post in the coming text). This is the first time I read the newspaper, which is not edit in Mainland China. It’s interesting and new to me. First of all, I was impressed by the amount of pages. Holding this newspaper is like holding a magazine. The three sections have maybe sixty pages in total number, I didn’t really count it, however, it feels thick. Compare to china daily, which only have sixteen pages at a time. It’s very different.
And the content are much more interesting and substantial. I can get much information about the nation, the world, and Hong Kong itself. And many reports are in depth with research and background.
Also the morning post sees the world from a different angle. They have different point of view, which I could see from the editorials. The readership analysis tells that most of its readers are influential in Hong Kong and many of them are business designers and managers. They control the city. The target readership of the newspaper is middle and upper class. That’s why you could see Cartier, Armani and Mercedes-Benz ads on the newspaper.
To me, reading south china morning post is much more interesting than reading china daily. The morning post provides me a new angle; let me know the world of different point of view. I love to read newspapers and magazines all around the world.
