Opera 10 and the Microsoft Silverlight plugin

, , , , ,

Just in case anyone is wondering...

If you don't know, SilverLight is the Microsoft answer to Flash.
If there's some website that has videos or other content that you want to see but they chose to use SilverLight, not all hope is lost.

Just go to the download page for the SilverLight plugin. If you are using Opera, it will tell you that "This browser is not supported blah blah blah...".

Ignore that bullshit and just download it. Then close Opera and install it.
Be sure to remove any pre-existing version first, or it won't work.

After the installation takes place, reopen Opera and go to the plugins page. You should see the SilverLight plugin already enabled. Congratulations, and welcome to the fantastic world of SilverLight content. :-|

I upgraded my silverlight install per the instructions on the download page. I then went to verfiy the install, following the link to the Silverlight homepage.

The control activated, but when I try to click on one of the case studies Opera crashes. Reports submitted.

I would say it it is not fully cross browser as there are other browser who are 100% left out due to Microsoft :cough: marketing strategies :cough:

The plug in it self was updated a few days ago and Opera did not fail it is Microsoft who epicly fail at browser support, so it can't even compete with Flash Player (major difference in the supported browsers between the two (silverlight only supports about 3)

Bill writes: This makes no sense. I'm testing with the France 2 on-demand news Web TV. On a desktop an install of Silverlight works happily with Opera and Win7 and gets Fr2. On a laptop also running Opera and win7 (VERY recent install) I get a message from Fr2 telling me to install Silverlight, which is ALREADY installed. If I uninstall and try a fresh install it incurably hangs on its first screen. I've had to grit my teeth and use Internet Explorer, which gets Fr2 OK. If I try Fr2 again in Opera I just get the same message. I HATE Exploder and Gates!! Any ideas?
