    Texas County Courthouses

I don't know what started the collection except that I really, really like old buildings.
Symbols of prosperity and progress for an ever-growing state, Texas courthouses were once seen by locals as a proud icon of their county's development. These structures helped to lure settlers and merchants from abroad in hopes of expanding the county's population, economy and influence. In many ways each county considered itself its own country, as counties competed for people as well as a "claim to fame." To meet the rapid growth of some counties, numerous Texas courthouses played many roles, serving not only as a place to settle legal issues but as dancehalls, churches, meeting places and schools.

Gonzales is the most historic town in Texas. It was the very center of the Texas revolution in 1835-1836 and 40 years later it became a financial center as men made their fortunes in cotton and cattle. Lavish lifestyles resulted in large homes and buildings that have been preserved for over 100 years. To date over 80 historic properties have been documented.

Columbus is a city in Colorado County, Texas, 74 miles west of Houston, on the Colorado River. In 1890, 2,199 people lived in Columbus, Texas; in 1900, 1,824 residents existed. The population was 3,916 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Colorado County
This is where we got a personal history lesson from the County Judge who refused to let us go until we had visited the new ceiling in the courtroom. Seems that it had fallen after years of rust in the lath from roof leaks. It has been restored to immaculate condition.
    Thanks, Al!

We like to stop and look around all the state parks we pass and try to stay off the main highways when we can.
    This one looked interesting.
They discovered dinosaur tracks in the river bed but now that they are uncovered, they are starting to wear away.
The trackway dates to the Cretaceous period 113 million years ago and was an important clue for paleontological theories about how and where dinosaurs walked.
