About me
Dr. Dale E. Bazan is Assistant Professor of Practice in Music Education at University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Originally from Winnipeg, Canada he completed his Bachelors of Music and Bachelors of Education at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Canada), his Masters of Music in Instrumental Music Education at the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls, IA) and Ph.D. in Music Education at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH).Dr. Bazan's research interests include adolescent learning, instrumental music education practices, student-directed instruction, creativity, popular music, music technology, and the social psychology of music. He has presented his research at many conferences including those of the American Educational Research Association, Iowa Music Educators Association, Ohio Music Educators Association, Alberta Band Association, Ontario Music Educators Association, Nebraska Music Educators Association, and The National Association for Music Education (MENC). His research has been published in the peer-reviewed research journals Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education and Visions of Research in Music Education. Other writing has been published in Canadian Winds and Triad: The Journal of the Ohio Music Education Association. He also has a chapter in the edited book Advances in Music Education Research Vol 3. His most recent studies have been on beginning band instrument selection, musical tastes of adolescents, assessment and self-regulation in band programs, and student-directed instruction in middle school band rehearsals and after-school rock bands. In addition to his writing and presenting, he served as editorial assistant for Contributions to Music Education from 2004-2007, currently serves on the review boards of Middle Grades Research Journal and Urban Education, and is the Research Chair for Nebraska Music Educators Association.
Dr. Bazan taught grades 5-12 band in Alberta (Canada), Iowa, and Ohio for 10 years and has been a guest conductor and clinician for both concert and jazz bands across Canada, Nebraska, Iowa, and Ohio. He served on the Alberta and Canadian Band Association Board of Directors, including a term as Vice President of the Alberta Band Association before relocating to the United States. As Vice President and Jazz Chair he initiated and organized the inaugural Alberta High School Honor Jazz Band. During this time he was also hired as Assistant Band Director of the Grande Prairie Marching Band which toured Australia and New Zealand and qualified for the World Marching Championship in Potsdam, Germany (WAMSB). His high school bands also received numerous awards including first place in Iowa High School Music Association sanctioned parades and invitations to the World Marching Championship in Milan, Italy (WAMSB).
