Opera 10.6 going javaplugin2 all the way

Java Applet Host icon One of the cool new things coming in Opera 10.6 for Mac (Alpha 1 now available) is the switch to the all new out-of-process Java plug-in (javaplugin2). An out-of-process plug-in of course means a crash free Java environment! Yej! (At least an environment that does not crash your browser when Java runs into a little trouble.)

What this means is that you have to install Java for Mac OS 10.5 Update 7 or Java for Mac OS 10.6 Update 2 (both available through Software Update) in order to use Java with Opera. Java on OS 10.4 and in non-updated versions of Mac OS is no longer supported.

Opera 10.5x Beta 2 for Mac

Opera Software today released Opera 10.52 Beta 2 for Mac. —and we’re aiming to get to Final release in a very short time! But that is no excuse not to download and test as it is almost done.

It is looking really good and we are very exited about the great progress we have had for this release. We have a gorgeous new interface. It is just great. And with the all new Carakan script engine: we’re the fastest browser on the planet. It is just amazing. We think you are going to love it. Steve Jobs

Opera 10.50 Alpha for Mac

Today, the Opera Desktop Team released Opera 10.50 Beta for Windows and Alpha for Mac and Linux.

The big changes on Mac include:
  • New Features
  • Growl support (more info)
  • Almost fit for everyday use (not really, but you could)
  • Almost all keyboard shortcuts work again

There are still some big problems including:
  • No <video> support
  • Only Flash plug-in
  • No Java
  • No Mac sheet dialogs
