MIL-STD-130L:

MIL-STD-130L is a most fundamental item identification marking standard by which marking requirements for different products may be developed during design action. The Department of Defense uses MIL-STD-130L being a standard norm primarily for acquisition of military material. Moreover, MIL-STD-130L is also made use of by other government agencies with regard to conduct similar activities. For a matter of fact, MIL-STD-130L standard is widely used in the non-government industries for developing company specific marking guidance because of their items. MIL-STD-130L is the hottest edition (revision L) incorporates and implements the DoD Unique Identification (UID) insurance coverage issued 29th July, 2003. The latest edition also applies to the area of machine-readable marking by offering an in-depth guidance as this technology standard is constantly on the develop beyond commonly known bar code protocols.

MIL-STD-130N:

MIL-STD-130N is the latest version of MIL-STD-130 (with version N) which was released on 17th Dec, 2007. The change will not affect the interpretation associated with different UID coding requirements which include labels, validation and proof. The new MIL-STD-130N normal defines Label as "An item marked along with the identification information of another item and affixed compared to that other item. A label may very well be of any similar and different material than that with the item to which it's affixed. " This essentially translates that a label (info plate, name plate, ID plate, etc) can now be made of some sort of metallic or non-metallic materials. Besides, the labels can be affixed to the diagnosed item by any proper means. According to that MIL-STD-130N, the UID will now be limited to 50 characters only.

The new UID standard MIL-STD-130N in addition has modified the definition of Validation the following: "Confirmation by examination together with provisions of objective evidence that particular requirements for a unique intended use have recently been fulfilled; that all requirements have been implemented correctly and completely and tend to be traceable to system requirements. "

Besides, the MIL-STD-130N defines Verification as follows: "Confirmation by examination, and provisions of objective evidence, that the item identification marking requirements specified within this standard and the associated contract have been fulfilled. "

These sections are extremely critical as they put the onus on the contractor to be able to prove that the UID labeling meets the needs of the Standard.
