EU drive for major telecom reform

The European Commission has given a strong signal that it is about to break down national barriers in the telecom sector and boost competition.

This, after signals of anger from the 'GSM Association' that European Commission's suggestions of cutting costs for consumers making calls on trips abroad. Telecoms companies say they need the extra revenues to subsidise other services - for example to keep national calling costs down - or to give customers free phones. That the move would distort/stifle competition between operators.

Ha-Ha. Roaming charges are preposterous. With the 'wrong' kind of subscription I can pay 40 cents per roaming SMS, 80 cents per minute when answering (rounded to 60 seconds), 340 cents per minute when dialing home (rounded to 60 seconds): RO Vodafone while in Serbia

In the case of multinational corporations, I can have the advantage of feeling 'at home' while roaming, e.g. paying just extra 120 cents for every call while connected to Vodafone Albania.

Of course it's also expensive when you want to call or message internationally. Naturally.
