Dare To Code

And the winners are...

The Dare to Code contest brought in some very interesting widgets from Universities across the world. We would like to thank all participants for their incredible work.

After much deliberation between the Opera jury, here are the final winners of the contest.

Gaurav Tak is the global, as well as the regional winner for Asia, for his outstanding effort of spreading the word about Opera Widgets in his campus and publishing several widgets during the contest. headbang

For his excellent efforts, his University will receive Opera's first ever Opera Widgets University Trophy! Gaurav will receive an award certificate signed by Opera's co-founder Jon S. von Tetzchner, Opera goodie bag, and a gift certificate to an online store worth USD 700! yes

Violeta Rosales is our regional winner for Americas. And Andrzej Jasonek is the regional winner for Europe! They will both receive award certificates signed by Jon S. von Tetzchner, goodie bags and gift certificates worth USD 200! bigsmile

Congratulations to all the winners! party

Update: Unfortunately there are no qualifying widgets from the continents of Africa and Australia and hence we are unable to select respective regional winners. We hope that in our next contest we get greater participation from these regions.

Jacktone, check out the last paragraph: "Unfortunately there are no qualifying widgets from the continents of Africa and Australia and hence we are unable to select respective regional winners. We hope that in our next contest we get greater participation from these regions." sad

Whitney NjiruWheatknee Wednesday, May 4, 2011 6:18:22 AM

@anna perhaps you can email the ones that participated but didn't qualify and tell them the flaws that they had, that led to them not qualifying. This may give them perspective and a checklist for future reference. Cherrio

Anna Brandtannageneva Wednesday, May 4, 2011 8:34:36 AM

@Whitney:

We rejected many widgets that went through our standard moderation process. During that process the widget authors were contacted with issues they should fix. This includes the authors of the two widgets that were submitted from the African region. The widget contest was open from December 2010 until end of March 2011. Under the contest rules if we did not receive a working widget by then it would not be a part of the contest evaluation.

We were very much looking forward to crowning a winner for Africa and hope that we'll be able to do so next time around!

chimasia okwemba jacktonechimasia Wednesday, May 4, 2011 2:05:52 PM

ok,hope next time we'l try our best to meet the standards. the results aren't pleasing for africa. .

Vaibhav Yadavvebs0205 Wednesday, May 4, 2011 5:20:38 PM

Congratulations!

Gaurav Takgauravtakswm Wednesday, May 4, 2011 5:27:51 PM

Thanks Vaibhav. We made it true with the support of Opera Team,Sagar Sir and Anna Ma'am.

Whitney NjiruWheatknee Thursday, May 5, 2011 3:17:18 AM

@ Anna
and the two widgets are? Because I can confirm three widgets that were finished in due time and all uploaded successfully.
Office gym by me, whitney
Radio widget by felix kimaru and
a clock by jacktone.
The latter two are my friends and I can confirm felix communication about the issue <which if I may say was out of his scope of control. It had to do with the radio stations servers having a lot of downtime> hence need for a bit of clarification about the widgets from Africa.
Cheers

Anna Brandtannageneva Thursday, May 5, 2011 7:28:12 AM

Whitney, I was not one of the moderators. If anybody feels that there widget was unduly treated they themselves should please get in touch with Sagar.

Whitney NjiruWheatknee Thursday, May 5, 2011 7:37:17 AM

Sagar who? There is more than one person with that name in the Opera Community.

Anna Brandtannageneva Thursday, May 5, 2011 7:52:54 AM

http://my.opera.com/sagar/about/
Send him a message on My Opera or send your email to me so that I can forward it.

Anna Brandtannageneva Thursday, May 5, 2011 8:04:27 AM

Whitney, we had a look at your widget just now to see why it was not counted as an entry to the competition and we now have some clarity.

The competition guidelines specifically requested that you mention Dare to Code in your widget description. You did not, which made it impossible for our moderators to detect that this was an entry to the competition.

For further questions about the moderation process, please refer to Sagar directly.

As for the creators of the other two widgets, we were in touch with them directly during the moderation process, but if there still any uncertainties as to why the widgets could not be approved, they are always welcome to recontact us for clarification.

Whitney NjiruWheatknee Thursday, May 5, 2011 9:49:34 AM

Oh bummer. knockout
Well that explains that.
Looking forward to the next round of widget competition.
hope you assist them and anyone else whose widget did not qualify.
It was fun while it lasted. <off to some j2me programming>
Hasta la vista
