Secret Opera-only feature in Gmail

, ,

Did you know that Gmail has a feature that's only available to Opera users?

Because Opera is the only browser to support <input type="url">, it is the only browser that has URL autocomplete for the "Insert Link" feature in Gmail's rich text message composer.

So everyone gets the same code, but it only works in opera, right?

Yeah, except in IE because IE throws when you try to set <input>.type to an unknown value.

Too bad the rest of Gmail misbehaves in Opera... :frown:

What isn't working?

:yikes:

@dbloom: For example, have you noticed it takes a long time for drop down menus to appear, or that Opera becomes really sluggish when smileys are enabled in the compose window?

David Bloom 2. September 2009, 18:45

@AleksOD: I'm not sure if I count minor performance issues as "misbehaving". Also, the smiley performance issue doesn't seem to happen for me in Opera 10 on Windows or Linux.

interesting, I diden't notice that as I use my gmail account through the opera's mail software

Alexei 3. September 2009, 19:56

@dbloom: OK, how about when you are in rich ext editing mode, if you separate lines of text by pressing "enter" several times, those spaces won't show up in the resultant message that the receiver sees.

Why doesn't Google Chrome support this code?

This feature is in the draft.blogger.com, too.

David Bloom 4. September 2009, 02:14

@AleksOD: That's an Opera bug (and it was fixed in Opera 10)

Alexei 4. September 2009, 03:56

Oh, really?! Shweet! Thanks for letting me know

I've been really impressed with Firefox - and recently moved up to Firefox 3.7 which tests out faster than Opera. However, with Opera 10.10 the balance is restored. Firefox still has quite a few extra features (actually, not Firefox - but the add-ons which put Opera functions in there, like Firegestures) and for some browsing it is much better.

However, I've had absolutely no problems with websites and generally it feels just as quick as Firefox (maybe there's a difference, but it isn't too noticeable).

Happily now, I have a good webkit browser (Epiphany), Presto with Opera is like half way from Webkit to Gecko - and of course Gecko fuels my Firefox, Flock, Seamonkey and Prisms - so I could really never survive without those.

I think the 'bug' with drop down menu's is partly due to the call to download the menu's after you click them. I get this equally with Firefox.

Nice to see some Opera love from Gmail, David.

(Any idea when the Gmail Help pages may get updated to reflect that Opera is a supported browser...and not a snot-nosed orphan?) :eyes:

Artur "Jurgi" Jurgawka 12. September 2009, 11:45

BTW, are there still any problems with Google services in Opera? For me everything works fine since a long time, but I'm using only gmail and feedreader, and I have a little compare to other browsers with them.

I cannot agree with you more! Google support Trident, Gecko and Webkit. Why not Presto and standards?

I had a problem signing into gmail using Opera 10 browser, running on ubuntu jaunty. My password kept getting rejected.

But when I used firefox instead, I got into my gmail account with no problem at all.

Has anybody had the same experience?

Aadil 16. September 2009, 04:25

I'm using Opera 10 on Ubuntu Jaunty (netbook remix)
The only problem I've had is with regard to my network connection recently, but Gmail works fine otherwise. are you having problems with Turbo on or off? :left:.
(shouldn't this be in the forums?

Artur "Jurgi" Jurgawka 16. September 2009, 08:42

Turbo seems to be overloaded often. Especially, when posting comments/posts, etc. May be, that this affects webmails.
