Search engine optimization for your blog can be many things and is not the easiest of things to learn. The search engines we use constantly place new demands on the blogger and constantly revise their old techniques. Today's new fangled wonder method is tomorrows faux pas to be shunned. The trick is to have your finger on the pulse and always be prepared to discard what you know and learn again.
The unfortunate truth is what works today will work well but, it may not work as well tomorrow and probably less well a year from now. As soon as you submit your site to a search engine, it will start to get ranked or rated on it's content on lots of things. A good way of finding out how to tweak your pages is by creating two identical pages and trying out different things on each page. For example you could have your Meta tags stating exactly what your site is about on one page but leave them blank on another.
It's rather obvious when you think about it but it's not always obvious what you have to do to achieve optimization, let alone good optimization. Try out things on your own blog like creating your two identical pages but have one that has the page title in the URL.
Then try exactly the same thing but with the title of the page in the URL and you'll soon see that the page title and URL are as important as the Meta tags and description of your page. The text on your page is without doubt the most important aspect of your optimization. Web crawlers run over your pages and analyze every bit of your text.
You can play about with lots of different styles and continually test your results until you can see which works best. Another way of getting ranked that is as old as the the search engines themselves is by having lots of back links. What this means is having other sites link in to yours. A long time ago you could join schemes that would mean you trade links with other blogs or sites in order to achieve this.
These are actually a good example of how things have changed when it comes to optimization. These days the search tools recognize that links are reciprocal, so if you have more links coming in than going out then this is good.
To say that back links are worthless would be a big mistake and one that nobody should make. The important thing to remember is that if a site links in to your blog about football and the linking site is a football site then it's a good link. If you have a hundred sites about football linking in to your blog and they in turn have lots of good links then this is very good.
When you try and sum everything up in a few words you are attempting the impossible and by the time you finish what you are saying it will probably be obsolete information. Your best bet is to speak to a professional that has their finger on the pulse. Any search engine optimization for your blog will be done to a much higher standard and in a much shorter space of time by them.
