The end of last year I decided to join the Shoot & Tell group. There are people in the group much more knowledgeable about photography than me, but they are very welcoming toward all. I have already learned a thing or two. My personal album that's part of this group is called A look at Ohio and here is its URL: http://my.opera.com/shootell/albums/show.dml?id=5722372
Here are my latest photos there.
- Gimp - runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux
- gThumb - only runs on Linux
- digiKam - originally on Linux, but it has since been ported to Windows and Mac
- Picnik - a web site for doing online photo editing (no registration required)
I've been wanting to photograph birds, but up till recently I was having limited success. Although my camera had 4X optical zoom, that just didn't allow me to zoom in enough to capture my subject. Here's one of my efforts.
But once a year we get our annual credit card kickback (our "reward" for using the credit card). Since we actually don't carry a balance or pay any finance charges on the card, this works out well for us. Last year Bob got a netbook with the kickback; this year he said I could choose something. So I decided to get a new digital camera with more zoom.
It's definitely harder to photograph birds than I realized. By the time I've located the bird and zoom in on it, it flies away. And though the extra telephoto power is great, now that I can really zoom in on the bird, I have noticed that any unsteadiness on my part is also amplified. Nonetheless, I have been having a lot of fun with the new camera. Here are a few of my favorite shots.
My husband and I shared our first SLR camera, a Canon T-50; it is a film-based camera. Although focusing was a manual operation, the camera automatically set the shutter speed and aperture value, so you didn't have to know a whole lot about photography to use it. All the photos in my Spain photo album were taken with it, and the negatives were used to make Kodak Photo CD's. (Interestingly, both my husband and I remember having taken the best shots )
