HOW-TO: PSPcasting on your Mac

Luckily, Mac users have an excellent existing tool to automagically download a slew of videoblog media files at once: ANT. ANT is a video RSS aggregator and player rolled into one, so you can subscribe to feeds with video enclosures, download a whole batch of video at once and watch the entire playlist in the built-in player. We’ll use ANT to automatically restock our supply of short video clips, and PSPWare to automate converting the clips to the PSP-friendly MP4 format and transferring them to our portable.

Ready for your close-up? Here come the vlogs

One approach is to create a videocentric version of the RSS tool that lets readers “subscribe” to multiple text blogs and view them in one place. A video version would essentially let viewers create playlists of vlogs, ideally all in the same digital media player with easy transitions between each. One of the most advanced efforts thus far is called Ant, available now for the Mac and with a Windows version soon to arrive.

Podcasting: the 21st century soapbox

Jay Dedman, who works at a Manhattan community television station, organized the first conference on video blogging last month in New York City. He also helped develop an application similar to iPodder called ANT (antisnottv.org) for video.

Dedman says that as the technology for video becomes easier to manage, there is an increasing number of creative uses for video on the Internet, such as "Vspan," which is the experimental video blog of Boston city councilman John Tobin.

"We might see the day when I don't vote for you unless you have a video blog," said Dedman. "I want you to put yourself out there and let me comment. There's a real demand out there and a need for completely unmediated information."

What personal broadcasting will look like in months, let alone years into the future, is impossible to predict given the rapid pace that these Internet technologies develop and morph. Henke, though, hopes blogging and personal broadcasting continue to grow and to engage more people.

"TV has taught us to be passive consumers. We sit in front of the TV and eat. Blogging and podcasting are about being an active citizen," he said. "It's about keeping check on the mainstream media and thinking critically about what citizenship, freedom and democracy mean. It forces you to really dig into what's around you."

I wanted to mention some great new feeds that you can subscribe to with ANT.

Medicinefilms.com is an online community for personal movie sharing. A Medicine Film is a short home video made in response to one of the assignments created by the site's founders and super-users. Medicine Films are creative, often collaborative, documentary "slice of life" mini-movies.

Medicine Films now supports three different types of RSS 2.0 feeds, all of which work in ANT.

First, is the site-wide feed for everyone's latest blog entries, movies, and news: http://feeds.feedburner.com/medicinefeed

Second is a feed for each user containing their own content, plus the content of their Medicinefilm.com buddies. For example, http://www.medicinefilms.com/myfeed.rss?username=undah, shows Undah's content and the content of Undah's buddies.

Third is a feed for each single user's content. For example, http://www.medicinefilms.com/user.rss?username=undah, contains Undah's content.

Undergroundfilm.org is a non-profit that is building a framework for content creators and owners to get their work where they want it most: in front of an audience. Undergroundfilm delivers video everywhere the Internet goes: on computer monitors, television sets, cellular phones, projected on screens, and whatever the next new digital distribution opportunity might be.
