Safari 4 vs Firefox 3 vs Opera 9 – VERY Non Technical Review

, , , ...

That B**** is FAST! :eyes: Safari 4 I mean ….seriously! I find Opera takes long to load in general but Safari’s load time is non-existent! Firefox 3 (with considerable plug-ins) loads pretty well but Opera takes twice as long :irked: Safari destroys them both.

Opera needs to watch it’s back cause the only thing that keeps me from switching is the way Opera handles Transfers in it’s own tab, the “Duplicate Tab” & “Paste & Go” features which I use extensively.

Another thing I love about Opera is the close knit community. If I have a problem I can contact Opera directly & get help in a second. I doubt that would happen with other browsers.

One quirk I dislike in Opera is the way it handles Bit-Torrent files. …because they have a built in Bit-Torrent program when I click a torrent file to download, Opera takes it by default. However I would rather use my own Program. There must be a way to turn that off but for the life of me I cannot find it. :irked:

I have a plug-in in Firefox 3 that gives me Speeddial (though not as much as in Opera) & Safari has a similar “Top Sites” interface. Yeah Opera came out with it first but in the end it doesn’t matter. Once it works on your particular browser. Therefore that feature is no longer an advantage for Opera.

Now this Acid3 Test I keep hearing about is a big thing for browsers. And apparently it’s HARD to pass because not even Firefox gets a perfect score. Opera fails…. & but Safari 4 gets the perfect score :insane:
I can’t begin to imagine how difficult making a browser & keeping it up to standard with current technology is, however it is a bit sad that for all Opera’s innovation (Speeddial, Unite etc.) that we don’t even get mentioned in the same sentence as the ‘Popular browsers’.

I remember hearing that the reason why some sites can’t load pages in Opera is not Opera’s fault but that the sites do not take the time to make themselves compatible with a browser of such small market share.
So I guess some problems will be resolved as Opera gains more recognition… but some (like the Acid3 test) they will have to resolve on their own.

More Speed Dials (Opera for Mac)

,

hey people :smile: ..I saw how to set more Speed Dials for Opera! (thanks Doc). Those who run PCs can visit here.

As for Mac users, while in Opera click “Opera > About Opera” from the menu tab. Note the path to the Opera directory.

Open a Finder window & navigate to the last folder & look for the file speeddial.ini

CLOSE OPERA (open what ever pages you need in Firefox so you can read along.)

Open the speeddial.ini file in any text editor (I used a free program called “Text Wrangler”)

Paste this to the bottom of the code in the text editor:

[Size]
Rows=3
Columns=5

I have a Macbook which is wide screen so having more columns than rows work better for me... but for those with a 4:3 ratio display you can use 4x4 rows & columns.

Save your file then open Opera. :up: if you have any problem.. ummmm... blame Doc :left: :whistle:

Things I'd Like To See In My Opera

Okay Tag I'm it :rolleyes:

(Tagged by philry4n & wallpearl)

What would I like to see in Opera? hmmmmm I wonder if I can find 5 things :insane: ..I know someone I want OFF Opera! :lol: but I can't list that :lol: okay:

1. Breakfast! :lol: ..I come here as I wake!.. it should offer me some grub! :lol:

seriously..

1. The Top Bar that houses the email & watched posts should update automatically. That way I don't have to refresh my page which can take a while if I have a slow connection or a CSS with lots of photos.

2. Email - I should be able to tag important emails.
When checking off boxes for emails to delete, I should be allowed to check them off on multiple pages so when I press "Delete" they are all deleted.
When I delete messages from the "Sent" section why does it revert to my regular inbox? :bomb: yeah fix that :irked: stay on the page I was on please :irked:

3. "CSS For Dummies" Group... up till now I have not seen a group that condescends enough to provide easy info on how to change their Custom Style Sheets :eyes: ..the existing sites are detailed.. but the terminology is confusing. Not to mention the style of the pages look cluttered & scares off people thinking it's just too hard to do :faint:
The first thing people think of, is changing their Banners.. then the Background & then possibly the colour behind the text on the blog area. As you progress the tasks will increase in difficulty & terminology. The idea should be to TEACH.. not just offer tips for those who all ready have a background.

4. More Themes!! ...so many themes but they all look the same :irked: cause they have the same format. (with the exception of those 2 new themes by Dustin.) (personally I hate the grid style of the friends page :faint: I like them one on top the other with their quote at the side :up:)

Some people like myself prefer Simple, Clean lines. Seamlessness. geometric shapes (the Frank Lloyd Wright of Templates) ...some people like details.. curves.. maybe something Art Nuevo? If we could get four basic templates styles to chose from that are completely different from each other that would be great.. each style could have four variations.

(this would make finding CSS for your particular Template harder.. but the "CSS for Dummies" Group could address this easily.)

5. I need someone specific I can address all problems to! I hate being at the mercy of Forums where you leave a question & no one may care to look or answer your question. Plus I know Espen is tired hearing from me :lol: ..Opera may need more than 1 person to act in this capacity though. :smile:
