Phishing, UNIX and plug-ins...

, , , ,

...are the main fixes in this mid-weekly build.

PhishTank has been added as an additional Fraud Protection blacklist. PhishTank is a free community site where anyone can submit, verify, track and share phishing data.

Changelog:
  • Fixes to the Fraud Protection feature.
  • Fixes to Opera freezing with Flash 9 on Linux.
  • Fixed smooth scrolling on UNIX! w00t!!1!
  • Flash now works on FreeBSD! OMG!!!11!1!

We would like feedback specifically on any regressions you might notice with plug-ins on Linux. Note that the fixes might not fix all issues with Flash 9 yet, but you should see improvements.

A little note on where to enable smooth scrolling on UNIX: you find a checkbox to enable the feature in the advanced tab of the preferences, under "Browsing".

For our FreeBSD users that would like to experiment with Flash on FreeBSD: getting Flash to work is (unfortunately) not completely straight-forward yet, but here is a little HOWTO:

  • Copy operapluginwrapper and from the Linux static .1 archive to your local installation, overwriting the existing one
  • Copy libnpp.so from your FreeBSD package to the opera binary directory
  • Start Opera

Arjan, our lead developer for Opera on FreeBSD, has posted a more detailed step-by-step description to the freebsd-questions list.

Feedback welcome

Awesome guys!!!!

dieburnbot 5. December 2006, 17:46

Thanks for the new build. Is the only thing new in the Windows version the Phishtank thing?

olli 5. December 2006, 17:48

dieburnbot,: There is also some bugfixes on the fraud implementation

Kyle Baker 5. December 2006, 17:56

Wow, I'm really loving this! Its a tuesday build! I was having a few problems with flash content on youtube and google videos. I'll be back to report on the status...

Thanks again

Tomasz Cieńciała 5. December 2006, 17:58

Will it be possible to report phishing site to Phishtank directly from Opera?

法师 5. December 2006, 18:00

safa,hahahaha

Andrey Petrov 5. December 2006, 18:02

PhishTank  Alternatives always a good thing!

y0r1c 5. December 2006, 18:09

Remco Lanting 5. December 2006, 18:10

Ramūnas 5. December 2006, 19:07

The videos on youtube still doesn't work everytime, sometimes I just get gray box in that place.
This build, and flash 9.0.21.78

Joey Wagh 5. December 2006, 19:08

Is PhishTank integrated into Opera? If so, how?

babox 5. December 2006, 19:13

What does Opera do, for example, if PhishTank consider fraudulent a site and GeoTrust consider the same site secure?

Ar1Pe 5. December 2006, 19:35

Thank you again :D

Ed 5. December 2006, 19:38

When are you guys gonna work on the cookie settings in site preferences. That is definitely a bug.

Kamalesh Thakker 5. December 2006, 19:38

I think it was quite cruel to fix smooth scrolling for UNIX, but not Mac yet...

I think I'm going to go around pouting all day.)

romaluca 5. December 2006, 19:40

I have install this version of opera in ubuntu.
When the install is terminated the program tell me that there are conflits.
When i try to launch opera this starts.
The problem is that not load the web page.
Thanks

Andrey Petrov 5. December 2006, 19:56

What does Opera do, for example, if PhishTank consider fraudulent a site and GeoTrust consider the same site secure?

I think that Opera should believe in worse

Andres 5. December 2006, 20:09

Big surprise

Even Nedberg 5. December 2006, 20:12

Great build!

www.motogp.com almost works on Linux, but it is very slow! The page uses heavy flash!

Or are they going to give a priority to one of the two sites (GeoTrust and PhishTank)?

The exact algorithm is not yet complete, but the data is managed server-side and will slowly be fine-tuned

Great works
I only remind some bugs ;-)

It's unhappy that doesn't exists any access to status of reported bugs.

Andrew 5. December 2006, 20:37

Believing in the worst is definitely the better option.

Opera says fraud site is ok -> User gives up passwords etc.
Opera says ok site is a fraud -> User exercises caution and incorrect database can be updated.

Besides, it's unlikely that a real site is going to be listed as a fraud site.

there's still something funny with flash9 and opera
this with ubuntu dapper:

(process:3037): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2215: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:3037): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_clipboard_get_for_display: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed
Adobe FlashPlayer: gtk_clipboard_get(GDK_SELECTION_PRIMARY); failed. Trying to call gtk_init(0,0);
The program '<unknown>' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
(Details: serial 71323 error_code 3 request_code 2 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
opera: Plug-in 3037 is not responding. It will be closed.
opera: Define environment variable OPERA_KEEP_BLOCKED_PLUGIN to keep blocked plug-ins.

Rafał Miłecki 5. December 2006, 21:06

Absolutely great changelog for Unix users. Thank you :-)

Kenneth Crudup 5. December 2006, 21:12

Scrolling feels better and I don't even have "Smooth Scrolling" turned on- is it real, or just in my head?

PM 5. December 2006, 21:17

Are you considering making fraud protection ON by default?

Please consider the overwhelming response of community members atleast againt current default "OFF".

alf245 5. December 2006, 21:30

I am sorry, but scrolling on Linux has not been fixed entirely. When the checkbox "Smooth scrolling" is unchecked and several tabs are open, scrolling via keyboard cursor keys is still extremely choppy.

alf245 5. December 2006, 21:37

@kennycrudup: I don't see any improvements here with "Smooth scrolling" turned off.

Wojtek Kowaluk 5. December 2006, 21:39

Finally some good news for Unix users, thanks. :-D Smooth scroll works nice, and so far i had no problems with plugins. At last I can try Flash 9 beta, cool.

ThArGos 5. December 2006, 22:01

Thanks a lot for this Unix update =)
And you made me quite laugh with "woot omg!11" ^^

Kyle Baker 5. December 2006, 22:09

I just came across a problem on facebook.com that Opera and FF2 have problems with, but IE7 doesn't. It seems that when I click on the "share|+" button above the youtube video that the share menu is trapped underneath the flash video. For some reason IE7 handles this differently and puts the flash video under the menu and works fine.

Opera without share menu
Opera with share menu
FF2 with share menu
IE7 with share menu

Anyone confirm?

Fixes to Opera freezing with Flash 9 on Linux.

Only some examples!

No it doesn't work! It crashed on this website

if you use the back button
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_list.asp?class=mb&cpu=1
http://www.sport1.de/de/index.html

it doesn't work on this website
http://www.express.de/servlet/Satellite?pagename=XP/index
http://www.betanews.com/
http://www.kicker.de/

it doesn't load Flash apps.

Need more work!
Tested on debian etch kernel 2.6.17-2
Tested on debian sid Kernel 2.6.18-3
Tested on Arch Linux 0.72 Gimmick Kernel26-2.6.18.4-1
Tested on Arch Linux 0.72 Gimmick Kernel 2.6.18-7-ARCH
Tested on openSUSE 10.2 RC5 Dec-02-2006

It's better us before, some apps what crashed before, doesn't work now, but still there are some crashes!

compare to FF it needs more work on Opera!

aimzz 5. December 2006, 22:32

When did this little build sneak in??? o_O
bug :chef: bug

Pinin 5. December 2006, 22:44

Opera Team: When did you expect to correct this bug???

1. open www.celebdaily.com
2. click on image > Click on image
3. Wait till image is loaded complete
4. right click save image
5. click very fast save
Result: image is damage.

-When I save the picture with Strg+Click it´s perfect.
-When is save the complete!! loaded picture with right
click "save image" the loading-progress begin a second time??
So when I klick save without waiting the second time load
process is ended its damage.

All windows 9.** Opera versions have this bug and
I´m not the only one: Opera Forum
http://opera-info.de/forum/thread.php?threadid=10953&hilightuser=2188
The last windows opera version without this bug is 8.54

Zeppelin 5. December 2006, 22:50

thank you! thank you! thank you!

these (Flash 9 on Linux) freezes were getting extremely annoying

thanks again :D

the improvements are at least obvious, keep up the good work.

Kyle Baker 5. December 2006, 22:51

I am also unable to remove mail.google.com from the Manage site preferences window. All other entries removed fine, but mail.google.com doesn't seem to be doing anything at all.

when will it, will it get fixed ?

does not put selection in right side box.

odd rendering by opera
http://www.ac3.edu.au/edu/support.html

try to get to the email address; the drop down menus are activated.

search bug.

with Opera
1. go to Help, About Opera
2. save file to disk, by default it is called "About Opera.htm"
3. open file
4. search for "ion"; Ctrl-F, "ion"
or
/, "ion"; if you don't want the dialogue box.

"ion" in line containing <Version 9.10> is highlighted in yellow

5. press enter or F3 to find the next instance

in line containing <Version information>
Vers<ion> - "ion" is yellow
informat<ion> - "ion" is green

Opera is supposed to highlight the 1st instance of <ion> in green.

compare with IE7 or Firefox
a. open file "About Opera.htm"
b. search for "ion"

works perfectly.
ie. 1st instance of "ion" is Vers<ion> in <Version information>.

here is another possibly related bug.
search highlighting bug

it has been present since build 8533

1. go to
Help -> About Opera

2. search for "pro"

3. note that pro is highlighted in "yellow"

4. Toggle between "Author mode" and "User mode"
Shift + G

5. scroll down the page
note the oddness in the highlighting
on my system:
"pr" is highlighted

6. try to search for "pro"
press F3

note that NOTHING happens

7. now press ESC or click mouse button in the window to get Opera to change focus.

8. search for "pro"

now it works.

Kyle Baker 5. December 2006, 22:59

@Pinin
I didn't come across this at work or in class, but since this is a public blog and for the purpose of improving this product and not looking at sites with content such as the link you posted..you should at the very least add a warning message about the content that is on that page so people know what *might* popup. I mean that's just respectful. I've seen this link mentioned on here several times now with no warnings, atleast have the decency to alert people to the content on a page such as that one. Straight up respect man. People can get fired from work if they try to helpout and pop that page up..even while on their lunch break or what have you.

paran- 5. December 2006, 23:29

Thank you for the flash9 linux support!

Claudio Santambrogio 5. December 2006, 23:40

Jada0007,

No it doesn't work! It crashed on this website

I hope you read all of the above post:

Note that the fixes might not fix all issues with Flash 9 yet

Non-Troppo 6. December 2006, 00:28

You are just trying to contradict me suckers (said in a Mr T accent)! I said last week:

Well, Opera currently use Trust Watch for their database, and you suggested they use PhishTank. I assume you mean't "instead of", because "as well as" is probably technically difficult/impossible. It would require quite a lot of extra work for opera to support two APIs, deal with database conflicts and provide a unified UI to report sites etc.

source

Still not sure exactly how you'll deal with database conflicts and a reporting UI, but so much for my naysaying... p:

Thanks for all...

Maxime Pelletier 6. December 2006, 00:40

Well, the only website where flash wasnt working fine (http://rds.ca/cageauxsports/), now tell me I need a newer version of flash.

Also, when i'm watching a youtube video, if I open another flash website or another video and then close it, the first one stop wirking and turn grey...

So for me, it's worse than last build... using kubuntu 6.10 is someone is interested... don't remember if I have the first or second flash beta. I will reinstall the second.

Christos Lazaridis 6. December 2006, 00:50

Anyone else having font problems in linux? I installed this weekly over a previous one and the menus look horrible no matter which font I select. My previous version was OK (I think I skipped a build so it should be the one from Nov.24).

Only the menus have problem; not the pages or anything else.

Fedora Core 6, KDE.

saito 6. December 2006, 00:53

The almost same error at console as jurkki's #comment2347608
On Fedora Core 5 build 507
