Speed Dial closer to completion

There has been a lot of work done on Speed dial during the last couple of weeks. We are now getting very close to completion.

Look out for the potential regressions or new bugs. Enjoy!

  • Upgrading will now attempt to merge the default searches with your own. Look out for bugs! Make a backup!
  • Put startbar back into the configuration - disabled by default
  • Speed dial now doesn't load entries every time
  • Added "reload every" to speed dial items
  • Disabled plugins completely in speed dial
  • Improved keyboard navigation in speed dial - menu keys now bring up the correct context menu, delete removes current entry
  • Added opera:config option to configure speed dial . Has four modes: 0 = Folded, 1 = Shown, 2 = No editing allowed, 3 = Disabled
  • New help tooltip in speed dial
  • A bunch of other speed dial fixes
  • Fixed bug where Opera wouldn't exit after visiting Yahoo! games
  • Saving big images should now work better
  • Skandiabanken.no's message about successful certificate installation is now shown

    UNIX
  • Improved Shared memory on FreeBSD and Solaris
  • Added more plugin paths on Solaris

steno 16. March 2007, 17:18

Yeah, my Opera likes to crash after the update every time when i start it. :frown:

ar1pe 16. March 2007, 17:20

Crashes every time for me too!

d4n3 16. March 2007, 17:21

When the devs are on a lookout for regressions, a release is coming

Tenho 16. March 2007, 17:22

Yep, crashes here too. Fresh profile did not help, it still crashes.

CheekyBoinc 16. March 2007, 17:22

*thumbs up*

I Love Opera

G-off 16. March 2007, 17:26

Crashes as soon as I start it.

Seems to be a Windows only bug.

Rijk 16. March 2007, 17:26

@Steno, @ar1pe, @Tenho, G-off:

Does the crash-on-startup go away if you disable Voice before upgrading?

RichardCooper 16. March 2007, 17:28

Crashes as soon as I start it. :frown:

Mathiasfr 16. March 2007, 17:29

Thanks !

jleedev 16. March 2007, 17:29

Two problems:

1. Amazon and Yahoo! searches keep reappearing on my personal bar. These were the only two of the built-in personal bar searches that I had kept during previous versions. Editing them in the Search preferences fixed this.

2. When using a customized dialog.ini, the speed dial configure dialog doesn't open at all. I had to manually merge in the new dialog into my dialog.ini.

ar1pe 16. March 2007, 17:29

@Rijk;

I made a fresh install, and it worked ok. Then I just copied my profile and mail and it still works.

I don't have voice enabled.

kennycrudup 16. March 2007, 17:30

Woohoo! Start Bar's back!

Kuja-IX 16. March 2007, 17:30

When a fixe for this vulnerability : http://secunia.com/advisories/24312/ will be published ?

ytsmabeer 16. March 2007, 17:31

SpeedDial crashes on my.
I am going to clear it and try again.

Cleared the SpeedDial, all is fine now.
8 thumbnails using

mgillespie 16. March 2007, 17:33

Had the crashing issue also. Copied all the INI files out of my profile, let it re-create then, new Opera was OK, copied the important ones back, and it was still OK.

Ahui886 16. March 2007, 17:38

good job
thanks

chrislu 16. March 2007, 17:38

YAY for startbar!

GREAT JOB!

johannordholm 16. March 2007, 17:39

Yay a new version! No crashes here..

Tenho 16. March 2007, 17:40

Rijk: disabling voice before the upgrade did the trick.
Now the newest build seems to be working fine.

FataL 16. March 2007, 17:40

When you try to rearrange items in SD by dragging, some places over thumbnails don't accept dropping ("decline" cursor showed).

svetlin 16. March 2007, 17:41

Works perfect, mail is fine. The only crash was when using some of the "Opera developer tools" on Speed dial. When I open the developer console I get a blank page, right left click to go back to Speed dial and crash.
I'm using the unix build.

ra-mon 16. March 2007, 17:43

No crashes here, with empty profile...

but:
Opera.exe 8746 caused exception C0000005 at address 67CA9CC0 (Base: 400000)

when enabling voice control with speeddial opened.

Thanks for SD improvements :D

FataL 16. March 2007, 17:43

SD still not obey "Reuse current tab" option.

abid78 16. March 2007, 17:45

No crash whatsoever. trying hard but just cant. Thanks Opera team.

agony 16. March 2007, 17:47

speed dial does no longer shows the names under the thumbs

and everytime I restart the browser the search engines are back in the personal bar and I have to remove them every time :\

Linux, shared version

borg 16. March 2007, 17:47

@FataL: How? When SD is the active tab, the link should open there regardless of Reuse current tab, just like a blank tab would. Or is it something else?

Lontronics 16. March 2007, 17:47

Thanks, seems to work fine here (static build Linux)

fReAk87 16. March 2007, 17:48

hmm...
upgrading -> first start -> crash
delete profile folder -> start -> crash
deinstall -> new install -> crash

what can i do?

kyleabaker 16. March 2007, 17:58

Awesome! Testing now!

[EDIT]
Speed dial definitly seems to be a lot smoother! Some pages are very friendly with speed dial. For example, try signing into your gamil account and then adding gmail.com to your speed dial list. You'll see that the thumbnail that is captured is the blank page with the "Loading" note at the top corner. This does not help at all when using speed dial cause it's not an appropriate thumbnail. I think that the tumbnail should be updated to the last shot of the loaded page. So if it updates itself then the thumbnail should as well. I'm sure there are plenty of users who will use gmail on a speed dial button and will not be pleased with the resulting thumbnail.

Also just wanted to say thanks for listening to us and bringing back the Start bar! Optional is better than none at all! Glad to see a direct response to some of our feedback! I can honestly say that this is my favorite build thus far!

The textbox field is still too wide on this page. Is anyone else seeing this? http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/1854/desktopteamtextareacz5.png ..anyone?

mgillespie 16. March 2007, 17:58

Windows crash definatly voice related, enabling voice kicks all the problems in again...

The only way I could get things working again, was deleting all the files in my voicelib directory under my profile...

Fyrd 16. March 2007, 17:59

This may be a minor issue, but I would prefer the entries not to be reloaded when starting Opera (though it's great it has been fixed on new window/tab!). If possible, having the option to keep them cached unless specifically reloaded manually would be great.

Akbalder 16. March 2007, 18:12

I had crashes too but setting "VoiceXML Enabled" to 0 in opera6.ini solved the problem.

Hmmm... Yeah, you right. I just can't get accustomed yet to the fact that SD is a blank page. :D

RuneSB 16. March 2007, 18:16

I don't know where to say this :
I wish you will have an @mail where to reach you !

Enyway:
Someone has "blockt me", but i can still see them, please correct this!
And i can't do enything:
So, make the block work both ways, plz

whatever2 16. March 2007, 18:17

my previous account somwhat stopped working, so im back with 2 instead of 3

nice to see a new 'monthly build'. im a little worried, because you guys spent almost a month on something that extension writter could do in few days. i dont know what youve spent rest o that time on, but i hope it is good. because.. well.. opera is lacking polish in more than one part, and still nothing is done to it

ive read chat with operas CEO, and was amused, that 'everything is worked on'. nice.. so next im to believe in miracles?

btw, this new build ceased working, upgrade or not, so no opera for me from now on. and ive never used voice, so guess again.

ive noticed fakeOnContextMenu function in browser.js - isnt it better to just add that damn event? and about browser.js - it does not update with 'check for updates' and if it does, i get some 503 error from xml.opera.whatever. guys, you REALY should invest some time and money in stability of your hardware. it sucks, 2 years after 'great' community [that still is inferior to even free forum software] and i still get server monkeys! it isnt funny, you know..

about the speed dial. 5 diggs on digg show you its cool factor. and it is nice that i can hide it completly, but well, opera crashes.. [both vista/2k3]

ps. we are delighted that development of devTools stopped, build 2520 for long time. it is nice to have an excuse why to not bother and what to say to customer if he wants opera support. 'cant be done, prducer does not provide devTools, and ignores questions from us' [yes, you do!]

enough rant.

to sum it up - opera crashes on both my rigs, completly and i dont have and never had voice installed/enabled

Investor 16. March 2007, 18:18

No crashes, SD is working fine (opens in new blank tab)...

(now, all configuration by using context menu... no more drag/drop from Tab to SD)

Darken 16. March 2007, 18:19

woooohoooo >>

Put startbar back into the configuration

Thanx!

rghammo 16. March 2007, 18:20

Great build so far.

I would like to reiterate that the thumbnails would be more helpful if they were larger or there was an option to zoom in on them easily. One easy (it seems) way to accomplish this is to allow users to choose not to display the search bar at the top of the speed dial/blank tab. I would bet that lots of Opera users use the address bar to search (g "", etc.) making the google bar useless. Without, the tab would have an inch or so more screen space and would therefore be larger. I still vote for a zoom option but maybe that is difficult to implement.

Is this (eliminating the search bar on the SD tab) possible currently? Can it be considered for future builds?

Thanks and keep up the great work!

spiffytech 16. March 2007, 18:28

I, too, am experiencing the reappearing search issue on my personal bar with each Opera startup. This is on Windows XP.

Also, the drag-and-drop function of the Speed Dial items is a bit tricky to work. If I drag the item to the center of the desired position, it doesn't move.

d.i.z. 16. March 2007, 18:29

  • Majority of new features and fixes goes to Kastrel and Opera 10. Opera 9.20 is just being polished at this stage.
  • New builds does not have access to browser.js immediately. Server needs to be configured to send customized browser.js to particular build (I guess).
  • I agree we should have real support for oncontextmenu and some more updates to devConsole.

whatever...

Tamil 16. March 2007, 18:29

While opening new tab, new speed dial should not be shown if there is an speed dial already (Opera should focus already opened speed dial).
