Desktop Team on tour!
By Arjan van LeeuwenAVL. Monday, May 21, 2007 12:15:53 PM
So you didn't get that?
In case there are people reading this blog that can't read Dutch, let me rephrase that.
The Desktop Team is getting ready for a full out invasion of the Netherlands, and we're taking no prisoners! However, if you happen to be in or around the city of Utrecht on the 28th of May, then this will be a perfect opportunity to have a friendly chat with the people behind Opera while enjoying a beverage of your choice. And if that's not enough, there's also a chance that you'll go home with one of the famous Opera t-shirts!
The meeting will take place at 13:00 in Cafe De Flater, Oudegracht 140, Utrecht. If you plan on attending, please leave a reply in this thread, so that we have some idea of the amount of people that might turn up.
See you there!
And by the way...
Opera 9.21 was just released! Go and update your browsers!

Seriously?
Next time, put it up the day *before* the day before a holiday, particularly if the holiday falls on a Thursday, and particularly if said product has been finished for several days at that point anyway...or just wait until Monday.

Zover heb ik ook met deze nieuwe versie er last van dat het wel meer dan een halve minuut duurt voordat Opera opstart, dat wel een beetje lastig is en met oudere versies had ik daar nooit last mee.
Hoe kan ik dat verhelpen?

I would like to suggest an automatic ad-blocking ad-block filter list updater to be integrated into Opera, since I do believe it would be an absolutely amazing new/improved feature for Opera.
I am suggesting this since I needed to use.....FF for a couple certain websites, I am a Linux/FreeBSD user, so I wince at the option of IE. So during my use I was just rummaging through the extensions to make my temporary stay in FF more bearable, like Mouse Gestures, etc. But one extension I was very impressed with and think our beloved Opera is missing is an automatic ad-blocker. Sure I have set myself approximately 60 generic (http://*.intellitxt.com/*) custom blocked objects within the options, and I basically have about every pop-up/ad/javascript blocked on the sites I do visit frequently. But other individuals may not have the patience as I do in order to create meaningful but overall USEFUL AND IMPRESSIVE ad-blocking filters. SO i say we/you make an option available that can be ticked on by a check box in the same preference section as the built in optional Fraud Protection.
We all know that once a FireFox user gets used to no adds from this Filterset.G list updater for FF extension, they will complain and think Opera as inferior, which we all know is not the case.
So having a built in, OPTIONALLY turned on ad-block filter list updater (and optional time between filter list checks like every 1-2 weeks) would make Opera an even more formidable opponent in the browser wars , which I wold love to assist in making opera the universal victor.
So some script or built in feature to read the http://www.pierceive.com/filtersetg/latest.txt file to see what the latest filter is, and refer to the most current filter to download, or some other kind of ad/pop-up blocker would be what I'm referring to. If you are using Windows, as I was ~4 months ago, I never worried about FF + AdBlock plus, because if you are using Windows you MUST try a blocking program called Ad Muncher (http://www.admuncher.com/). Since that is the approximate equivalent I would be comparing and referring to, as it was always a required/essential app on my XP box back then, and it worked wonders, no worrying about program slowdown either, since it was a totally standalone app that sat in the system tray, BUT if Opera had some sort of integration or cooperation/inspiration from this, I believe Opera would be making another significant leap ahead of the other available competition browsers.
So Opera Dev's, PLESAE consider considering/refining the ad-block/pop-up blocker to either up to or beyond the standard to other browsers with or without a stint helper extension or app, since I believe the Opera community does deserve a (web)life free of annoying, page delaying ads, no matter what platform they are using opera on, as just a checkable/selectable option like the Fraud protection
Thank you for reading my long post as it is the very first suggestion I have submitted to date, hope it wasn't too boring, and to give a shout out to the guys/gals who make Opera and it cross-platform magic possible, YOU RULE!!!!, OPERA 4 LYFE!!
(I also put this post in the Desktop wish-list suggestion forum, but also here to help address the situation)

Also, most likely won't be able to make it to the gathering. I'm about 99.99% sure I won't be able to make it. Too bad tho. I know it will be difficult, but do try to have fun with me there.

You can go into the FT site via deeper link, but the fly-out menu seems to be broken and does not instantiate in this build...

Or: "You're not much if you're not Dutch".
Serously though; the comment regarding an ad blocker I am in full agreement with, as I occasionally use the new Maxthon2 browser for certain web sites, which uses IE7 as it`s rendering engine and has a very effective ad blocker.

For example limiting the amount of stored RSS feeds would be nice. I have to constantly clean feeds because they have 1000s of messages I'll never read again. Also they should stop Opera from freezing for a moment when several feeds are updated on first start.
People have also wanted a "delete message from server" option for the mail client so that once you delete a message it's also removed from the server. This is most likely familiar to anyone who has gotten spam and then has to go through some webmail to delete it from the mail server as well.
PS. Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get a WEBSITE SPECIFIC option to enable "UserJS on HTTPS" WITHOUT THAT ANNOYING NAG DIALOG? I need to use a Novell Groupwise webmail that's behind HTTPS and it shows all fucked up in Opera (no Next 50 messages buttons, messages show up in small windows and crap like that). This could be fixed with some UserJS but I don't want to have some click some stupid dialog every time I go read my mail.

If you've read around about 9.5 at all then you'd know that they have openly stated that they freezes have been eliminated in the internal builds of Opera 9.5x (Kestrel). This is the phase that is supposed to start introducing some extreme fixes and improvements.

Man...anyway adbrite inline ads may not be working with current and past versions,
as with some Amazon ones.

I've downloaded the new version and works ok.
However i've found that yahoo mail beta is complaining about the browser.
With previous release (9.2) yahoo mail beta worked (not excellent but worked).
I've tried to mask or have opera to identify as a different browser but doesn't work.
Thanks
