Post-Alpha Opera 9.5 Release

, ,

Just when you thought the Alpha was exciting, here's the first post-alpha release!

Previously the term weekly has been used to describe our "weekly" releases. As most of you know they don't always appear at the end of every week, therfore we will be endeavouring to deliver a steady stream of builds as they are ready. So be prepared, the next release may come on a Tuesday or any other day of the week.

So what have we been doing?

We have been working hard on performance and fixing bugs, so go and grab the build and help us make Opera 9.5 even better! smile

Known Issues
  • Some Linux/UNIX packages are not available this time
  • Won't run correctly on Windows 95 or 98

codename_slesar:
That's the most silly sentence of all comments; congratulations.
Just keep using 9.23, and wait for 9.5 to be released, and stop saying non-sense while using a post-alpha realease

Junyor:
To sum up the bug with operapluginwrapper: the only way to fix it is to wait for Flash devs to fix this?

Daned4n3 Saturday, September 15, 2007 1:02:38 AM

i really dislike the new way the scrolling is done in 9.5...

it does feels smoother when scrolling quickly through a page, but when i scroll by one single "click" of the mouse wheel, the page first jumps and then eases in to the new position and it's harder for me to follow the position of the text i'm reading.

Northgrove Saturday, September 15, 2007 1:11:39 AM

"CRASH when rightclick on image and clicking "save image..." (repeatedly), not at all images though. the first build with this issue ever"

Confirming this here, for example: http://www.guildwars.com/community/guildweek/gotw-2005-04-06-amazonbasin.php ... as I tried to save the image of the caped character in the article introduction.

Update: OK, I can reproduce the crasher once again on trying to save the image on that page, from another computer / install. Reported as bug 285006.

Agree. New scrolling feels better when you press up or down keys once, but if you press continuously old style smooth scrolling seems better.

thx 4 fixing delete function in windows panel.

please bring back default
close other - ctrl-alt-shift w
close all - ctrl-alt-w
keyboard shortcuts.

I've personally re-installed them.

cached images
try this page with 9.23
http://majorgeeks.com/

notice that "hot", "pick" & "new" don't display in 9.23 with <cached images>

but do in 9.50

bookmarks
a) bookmarks not sorted properly.
b) focus is on <view> initially when doing a ctrl-shift-2
have to TAB x2 to get to <quick find>

links
a) focus is on <save>
have to TAB x4 to get to <quick find>

in 9.23 <quick find> is focussed

this bug was also present a long time ago.
9.5 doesn't remember previously opened directory
currently set to
"C:\Program Files\Opera 9.5 alpha"

Actually, that's the opposite of what i was saying smile

I like the opera 9.5 scrolling better when it comes to scrolling entire pages etc. but i dislike it when scrolling by small steps, as it makes more of a jump than in 9.23

Fabio Palliniflitz Saturday, September 15, 2007 2:50:42 AM

Click on the tray icon wont hide Opera in this build. Tested in WinXP SP2 only.

The 'x' buttons are really nice in notifications, I found them in the "find in page" ('.') too. ;-)

Thx for bringing back view bar.

Great progess, Kestrel r0x! Looking for some news in linux-flash.

Anilcranil7 Saturday, September 15, 2007 4:31:38 AM

I do not have words to express what I feel like...

OPERA ROCKS@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I am not into web development and do not understand much brwisers, but I have been using opera since 4.x versions....
With every version it fast, more secure and stable...

GREAT!!!

thenebulonfry Saturday, September 15, 2007 5:30:28 AM

Loooove the new mac build. thanks alot!
I migrated my my user js folder from 9.23 to 9.5, but none of my scripts work. Any reason for this?

Aletta Mesalettames Saturday, September 15, 2007 6:24:29 AM

Should mentione Win98SE.
It loads all but the mail program and then looks funky not loading
pages (or trying to) or speed dial images.

pLastic01 Saturday, September 15, 2007 6:30:27 AM

Please make the transfers window stop opening when saving an image.

And, please, when 'Reuse current tab' is unticked in prefs, let the 'Go to Web Address' browser menu item open the tab in the background.

Thanks smile

I need Qt4 version of amd64 build, as will many others next month with Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). I'm also having problems with meemix.com in linux, but this may be a flash-issue. Else, thanks for another fine build, unbeleavable how many times I've used synchronization already! Now if only I could synchronize all my searhes too.. p

Dinh Duc Quangbobebi Saturday, September 15, 2007 7:32:26 AM

Sorry ! Bookmarks can't sort by ..... ??

Kamaleshkamalesh Saturday, September 15, 2007 7:41:11 AM

Using build 4417 (well done on the Mac changes, beautiful brushed metal skin!).

Gmail:

Bullet lists, and numbered lists work now. smile Quoted text does not, as in last alpha.

Noticed that arrow keys don't work in drop-down lists in these alphas (such as gmail auto-complete addresses. Also in search menu here. Just type a few letters and arrow-down...no result gets highlighted).

Extra line spacing issue still exists when composing mail.

PicasaWeb:

Photos don't load after clicking on an album.

(I actually liked the page-loading spinner in the address bar in the last Mac alpha.) sad

Btw, any efforts to include "text-input area" resizing as in Safari3? Super useful! Is that in CSS3?

geo dimogeodimo Saturday, September 15, 2007 8:02:58 AM

OS: Windows XP SP2

------------------
BUGS

* History problems: Although the value "0 addresses to remember", dropdown menu (address bar) still displays visited pages.
* Yahoo: WebMail (classic): Write mail toolbar is missing
* Blogger: Many problems (display & appearance) with some templates
* Transfers: Right click (e.g. for clearing completed transfers) is not working all the times
* Bookmarks: Some glitches with bookmark folders

--------------------
SUGGESTIONS

* An option to enable/disable systray icon
* An option to rename subtitles (Speed Dial Boxes)
* A textbox/small toolbar to quickly change and enable disable proxy addresses
* Remember last save path (tansfer save dialog) -not always MyDocs path

p.s. First try to solve bugs like high process/memory usage, right click problems etc. than adding features. IMHO it will be easier to maintain opera and then add new features in a bugs-free program. Now its difficult to report bugs for kerstel engine because opera -the whole program- is very buggy with low usability (e.g. wand doesn't work).

Andriy Podanenkopodarok Saturday, September 15, 2007 8:45:24 AM

nice!!!!

Andriy Podanenkopodarok Saturday, September 15, 2007 8:47:12 AM

and what about window with mail accounts list checker at bottom of mail folders?
Such as in 9.23

GrantTLC Saturday, September 15, 2007 9:05:33 AM

Yeah, I'm getting the Bookmark problem - I can't seem to sort them alphabetically.

But more seriously, my downloads seem to have stopped working! Two .EXE files I've downloaded read as 0 bytes in size.

pLastic01 Saturday, September 15, 2007 9:27:13 AM

I've got images saving with .htm extension...
And if I save a duplicate image, the Save As box doesn't confirm that I wan't to overwrite the original image.

JasmoJazmo Saturday, September 15, 2007 9:29:04 AM

Why Email client is not having "sending profiles" or something similar (to thunderbird) to easily change a SMTP and maybe other stuff when changing from network to another (work / home for example) ?

olli Saturday, September 15, 2007 9:47:09 AM

pLastic01,: Thx I reported the image saves as .html and the second issue is already known

PascalG Saturday, September 15, 2007 9:55:45 AM

Very nice version, very fast !
just report a problem with saved page in .mht : the end lack
and your new shortcut (ctrl+b and ctrl+h) for bookmark and history are very good, but can you make a ctrl+e for the mail ? because I am switching every time between bookmark and mail, it is not easy to use the old and new shortcut wink

.Dani Saturday, September 15, 2007 10:15:56 AM

There seem to be some slight issues with the way Opera uses a third party program to open certain files. The one issue I can reproduce time after time is opening a .w3g file (Warcraft III Replay File) with it's default application (war3.exe). Opera 9.5 simply opens the game's main menu, whereas it should actually use war3.exe's default opening action, which includes something like -loadfile %1. This worked fine in 9.23, but is broken now. I'm guessing this is true for other extensions as well.
Apart from that, great release smile

koimark Saturday, September 15, 2007 10:23:43 AM

Does anyone else has problem with exiting Opera with OS X. Exiting via File - Exit or via shortcut doesn't do anything but blinks selection. I must now force Opera to quit. Opera itself works fine and seems better in OS X. Originally I installed Opera 9.5 over the 9.23 (and changed preferences folder of old installation to new). I thought this caused problem but with fresh installation it is the same. (Default Opera skin)

But still Kestrel is impressive - it is now my main browser both in Windows XP and OS X. Also synchronization is good feature. I would also like to synchronize sessions. I use a lot of tabs and use them also as a to-do list.

pefe Saturday, September 15, 2007 10:27:31 AM

I can´t enter my bank account. Even the virtual keyboard opens but without keys.

berend ytsmaytsmabeer Saturday, September 15, 2007 10:31:41 AM

@pefe: a quick fix :enable "fit to width" ctrl+F11
I see that the place to fill in the passwords and stuf isn't reachable so ctrl+F11 makes it appear again.

rechenkoenig Saturday, September 15, 2007 10:35:52 AM

I really like how smooth and quick the 9.5 builds feel - and they're already quite stable.

The new Open/Save File dialogs which let you choose the program you want to handle a file with at this moment are great.

But PLEASE give an option in opera:config to go back to old behavior of middle click scrolling: To center the mouse on middle click in order to have the same scrolling dynamics upwards and downwards. I always appreciated Opera for NOT doing it the way IE or Firefox do it.

Undo of closed windows and saving of selected Windows as sessions is a good start, but i'd like to see more session management - like saving selected tabs in the window panel as a session or previewing sessions as a list of pages.

Closing multiple tabs in the windows panel still does'nt work (bug-282026).

POP3 download of Mails does'nt work. Opera just downloads 1-3 Mails at a time and then waits another 5 minutes for the next 1-3 Mails.

pLastic01 Saturday, September 15, 2007 11:02:36 AM

@olli: thanks for letting me know!

When i start Opera 9.5 in the Windows Task-Manager the Memory raises up from 19.500 K to 36.500 K and then the Opera Window is showing. I don't like it to wait until the Memory in RAM has a size of 36.500 K. Could you fix this ?

shaneh Saturday, September 15, 2007 12:25:48 PM

nice build.. though I found an easily reprodued crash (Vista):

Press '/' to do a quick find. Hit the 'x' on the search window. Opera will crash.

Also, there seems no way to hide the systray icon.

And non-ratchet style mouse wheels still have 'jumping' issues while scrolling.

t1gershark Saturday, September 15, 2007 12:36:47 PM

Noticed also a problem with a mouse gesture.
Double clicking on an empty page does not load
the "Home" page when speed-dial is not visible.

Bill PBill_P Saturday, September 15, 2007 12:53:49 PM

cached image is not functioning properly, on some site it's ok and on others it seems all images are shown. See washingtopost.com vrs nytimes.com for an example.

illiad Saturday, September 15, 2007 1:23:57 PM

alettames: is that a crash in win98, or not?? (can you get to the 'preferences' ?) smile

Galileo Saturday, September 15, 2007 1:34:37 PM

Nice to see a new build. I wonder what has changed and bookmarks have so many problems now? Beside the sorting problem when I select a bookmark from its properties to place it on Personal Bar another bookmarks is placed instead. If you could explain us why this change...

vrah Saturday, September 15, 2007 1:44:00 PM

Arrgh, what's up with this 'Mail Store Update'. I have never used Opera for e-mail and this 'Updating mail store...' is running now for about 5 hours. Will it ever finish?

underman Saturday, September 15, 2007 1:45:18 PM

Thanks for the new build, Team Opera!!

Using this build as main browser =)

But I just want to point out the regression with bug 260228 with b9500/b9523: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=184869

The download manager on www.sub-way.fr doesn't even show anymore even with browser.js disabled, whereas it still works with opera 9.23 and all builds before.

It would be nice of you to fix that as most of premiers of US TVshows are coming this month smile

Hi! Unfortunately, opera:cache display no files, "empty now" cache button and translate function don't work anymore... sad

GuilhermeSpyMan Saturday, September 15, 2007 2:57:00 PM

Clicking the new mail notification now opens the Received Mail instead of [/b]Unread Mail[/b]. Bad idea since I just want to see the mail that just arrived.

Easy way to crash this build:

Press / on keyboard, quickly click X on "Find text" pop-up, quickly press /, quickly click X and so on... Crash on second loop for me, occasionally on the third loop.

Win XP x64.

Can anyone confirm?

senyorito Saturday, September 15, 2007 3:39:29 PM

I'm having trouble with my bookmark's arrangement on this new build -- Opera v9.5 Build 9523. And this is the first time that I'd encountered this bug (I think this is a bug). I haven't encountered this problem on Opera 9.23 and below.

Before, you can easily arrange and sort my bookmark's arrangement view. Now, even if I re-arrange it or by dragging a bookmark folder, it will still back when I relaunch Opera.

I don't know if this is only on me.

Would be cool if I could click a mailto link and Opera would allow me to specify a webbased mail service to use, such as google or live mail.
