A Snapshot a Day Keeps the Bugs Away

,

Time for another snapshot! We've fixed several issues that appeared in the snapshot yesterday, bringing us a step closer to Opera 9.5 Beta 1. Note that until the beta is released, there will probably be fewer fixes per build.

WARNING: These are pre-alpha builds: they contain the latest changes, but they also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, they may not work at all.

Changes:
  • Several stability fixes
  • Fixed problem loading Babelfish when trying to translate selected text
  • Disabled thumbnails in tab cycle by default; re-enable using opera:config#UserPrefs|UseThumbnailsinWindowCycle
  • Included Opera 9.2-compatible keyboard shortcuts file
  • Improved performance of history searching in the address bar drop-down
  • Fixed problem where web pages could load in chat tabs
  • Fixed some margin collapsing issues
  • Improved Opera 7+ mail importer
  • Fixed several issues with Windows 98
  • Fixed mail header display on OS X
  • Added an option on UNIX to choose the dialog toolkit: opera:config#FileSelector|DialogToolkit. 0 is auto detection, 1 is Qt dialog, 2 is GTK dialog.

Known Issues Fixed
  • [BUG 284849] Yahoo! Mail Beta crashes Opera.
  • [BUG 291258] Framesets don't work. Gives blank page on Gmail and other sites
  • [BUG 291335] Bookmarks in sub-folders are moved to the root folder
  • [BUG 290618] Viewing messages with smilies in Opera Mail may cause Opera to crash
  • [BUG 291267] Filters in M2 don't work
  • [BUG 290943] This build fails the Acid2 test

Known issues
  • [BUG 291580] Mails are blank on first click if messages bodies aren't downloaded when fetching
  • [BUG 291608] Clicking any mailto link will cause a confirmation dialog
  • [BUG 290416] Widgets don't work after restarting Opera
  • [BUG 267632] Images don't display when printing
  • If you used the Brushed Metal skin in the previous release, Opera for OS X will crash on startup
  • Won't run correctly on Windows 95
  • OS X version may cause persistent freezes on start-up
  • POP server cleaning has been disabled: When disabling the "Leave messages on server" option, existing messages on the server are not removed
  • [BUG 287170] On OS X, UI thumbnails have black backgrounds when using native skins
  • [BUG 184894] Native OS X UI elements cannot be used in skins
  • [BUG 286384] Yahoo mail is broken
  • [BUG 280261] Removing messages from filters does not work

I hope people will stop saying you won't be ready for beta... You obviously will be ready for it at that rate. :D

I believe! :alien:

Yepppppppp !!!!
Thanks !

d.i.z. 18. October 2007, 17:30

Thanks,

Opera can't remember mail (POP3, probably IMAP too) passwords across sessions. Is this considered as a showstoper?

It's probably bug 286864 (it wasn't reported by me).

d.i.z. 18. October 2007, 17:37

And thanks for fixing my bugs:
#290705 (autofocus crash)
#290696 (parse freeze)
#290618 (smiley crash)

Orlando 18. October 2007, 17:39

Wau! Thanks for the build! Great fixes!

thecrypto 18. October 2007, 17:42

Flash is still broken for me on x86_64 Linux. Probably gonna have to wait till after the beta for this to get fixed but everything else is working wonderfully. Keeps me from wasting time on YouTube anyways. A recent Opera convert and I am loving it.

Darken 18. October 2007, 17:44

Good job Desktop team!

SoulOfDoinel 18. October 2007, 17:44

Sig..sig...
I hadn't time to try 9600.

But I'm happy to see 9603.

I'love daily built !!

elitegeek 18. October 2007, 17:46

whatever it takes to have the end result as good as possible.

Keep up the good work!

csant 18. October 2007, 17:47

thecrypto, try using the operapluginwrapper from the 32-bit builds - that might work with the latest public Flash (not the beta). YMMV.

Soleen 18. October 2007, 17:49

Thank you for your work.

will there be Opera 9.5 beta 1 build for Sparc Solaris? I am afraid that not, since there has not been for a while, and the last one does not work at all.

Markus07 18. October 2007, 17:49

When you work on exif data, maybe you can change the viewing of time.

When in EXIF is

Exposure time: 0.005

it means 1/200 sec. OK it is easy to calc. But When

Exposure time: 0.0666667

then I need a calculator. 1/15 sec. is the result.

Markus

AyushJ 18. October 2007, 17:50

csant 18. October 2007, 17:55

Soleen, the sparc architecture has been suffering from some severe issues - we are working very hard on it. :worried:

FataL 18. October 2007, 17:58

Blobs not happy -- Opera freezes when you are trying to split them with "h" key.

It works for me, I haven't entered a mail password in a long time. Another tester sees the problem in one our of four of his POP accounts though.

If we can find a fix, it will be fixed before final. But we first have to figure out why this happens. Was this an upgrade mail acount, or freshly set up in Kestrel?

vinczej 18. October 2007, 18:05

Congrats for Desktop Team! It brings back the hope, that beta will be releasable!

I wait for widgets and some improvements of M2, yet.

AndrewNi 18. October 2007, 18:05

Win 98 support is back! Love the fixes and this extra snapshot

Works for me.

But, when single key shortcuts are enabled, the h key also focuses address bar. I can't see any shortcuts binded to h in standard keyboard config....

GiraFFi 18. October 2007, 18:06

Included Opera 9.2-compatible keyboard shortcuts file

This means that we have ready layout for ctrl+n for newtab and ctrl+d for paste&go???

If, thats awesome \o/

Kildor 18. October 2007, 18:07

Thanks ;-)
Now I can believe to «Usable Beta».

The account was created before Opera 9.50 and after upgrading it didn't ask for password at first (if I remember correctly) but then at some point Opera asked me for password (probably because of some connection error) and I've entered them and from this time it pops up this dialog everytime I start Opera.

I will look more into it. You know me, I won't stop till I find the cause.

It's 9.2 compatible, not 7.5 compatible  You can get compatible setups for older Opera versions on my blog, I'll later make sure they don't clash with any changes in Kestrel.

Thanks. Blobs should prevent default action by the way.

AyushJ - your Quick-Reply_Formatting_tools are behaving weird when editing message on this blog. Was this the case in previous builds?

Complex 18. October 2007, 18:18

The linux version no longer recognises the -notrayicon command line switch. Well, if it recognises the switch it doesn't do anything about it. Build 1600 (the last one I had installed) worked fine.

Complex.

Luchio 18. October 2007, 18:21

It would be nice if a keyboard shortcut gets assigned by default to the new "Make Readable" function, I found that option to be very useful.

DandS 18. October 2007, 18:29

Is GMail working with this build?

Hypezor 18. October 2007, 18:30

Wow, thanks for effort.
I'm repeating myself, but w00t!§!

d.i.z. 18. October 2007, 18:37

@Rijk: Passwords wont save when there are these lines with wrong hash values:
Incoming Password=000000083F1E16E185ADA8[more numbers]
Outgoing Password=000000083F1E16E185ADA8[more numbers]

in accounts.ini, in section of affected account.

After removing, everything went back to normal. I just had to enter password one more time and Opera happily remembered it this time.

I can't really tell what steps have to be made to reproduce this bug but I hope Opera devs will know why and when this line was added.

Oh, and I know now why this has happened. I have changed my gmail password at some point. So I guess that the problem is that Opera can't update these lines when we change password/user from interface.

If you have some account with those lines, try modifing some number and see if you will be able to correct password from interface. And if it sticks between sessions. It wont.

FataL 18. October 2007, 18:40

I like new mail progress bar, but what Opera will do if I have 10 accounts?

Indication of account name would be much appreciated.

kkuhlemann 18. October 2007, 18:41

Very fast build on Linux. The rendering of the website http://www.heise.de is severely broken with the Windows and the Linux build, the lines with links are merged horizontally.

The png-pictures of the avatars on this page ( http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2007/10/18/a-snapshot-a-day-keeps-the-bugs-away ) are doubled till mouseover on Windows 98SE. I think that is a png-rendering issue.
Otherwise the build works fine on Win 98SE, thanks to enable this again.

Flash works fine on Linux and on Windows again.

anyone noticed that if you right click (sometimes but most of the time) on file list in transfers it DOESN'T WORK. since 9.5 first alpha...

Yes, we're trying to get that fixed soon.

thecrypto 18. October 2007, 19:04

csant, While trying to figure out how to do that I realized that I had a full crash report built by Ubuntu that I just submitted to the bug reporting system. I hope it helps

andresruiz 18. October 2007, 19:06

Great to have frame sites issue fixed. Gmail is back for all those gmail users.
A Snapshot a Day Keeps the Bugs Away I like that, maybe is the only way to be ready for the date. And I ask, is it better to make fresh installations or is ok to upgrade every day ?

(jeje AGAIN) PLEASE don't forget about attachments in Windows Mail (Hotmail) they're all downloading as attachment.aspx

d.i.z. 18. October 2007, 19:09

Another serious bug.
This build can't open local files. Either by dragging it into Opera or using Open menu command.

EDIT: When this file is named index.html !

karmazilla 18. October 2007, 19:16

> Improved performance of history searching in the address bar drop-down

Excellent!

But search strings that contain spaces are still very slow - hope you crack that one before release.

Cryptobionika 18. October 2007, 19:19

"A Snapshot a Day Keeps the Bugs Away". Awesome motto! That is what I've been waiting for! Thank you very, very much! Now I just wait for a snapshot with mail fixes. Thank you again!

MetalRaise 18. October 2007, 19:25

Ah good, framesets back in action.

Is there somewhere a page, where I can have a look at all the submitted bug reports with their bug ID#?

saito 18. October 2007, 19:28

It's 4 in the morning here, thanks for Desktop Team :frown:

kkuhlemann 18. October 2007, 19:29

@ d.i. z.

Confirmed on windows. A silly bug because thats index.html only, index.htm and other files can be opened.

Strange. I've filed bug report 291770.

Improved performance of history searching in the address bar drop-down

Since keyboad short-cuts were changed to be more Firefox like, why don't you implement their drop-drop order.

Firefox

www.foo.com
www.foo.com/check
www.foo.com/check/mail

etc

Opera

etc
www.foo.com/check/mail
www.foo.com/check
www.foo.com

Firefox seems more consistent -- to me.
