Experimental <video> build released on Opera Labs

, , , , ,

Yesterday we published an experimental build with support for the <video> element and 3Dcanvas for the "standard geeks" to play with :-)

This build is based on Opera 9.5 Alpha so if you want to play with this please remember to not install ontop of a existing version.

You can download it from the article on dev.opera.com.

We have added new native controls and you can also embed Video in SVG.

You can find video examples here:

Some pages using the video element in SVG:

No known issues or other changes?

By fearphage, # 8. November 2007, 16:04:57

avatar
@fearphage: It's based on Opera 9.5 Alpha 1, so it wouldn't make sense to list any known issues compared to a previous snapshot release.

Only use this build if you want to test video.

"The Opera video build is currently only available for Windows"

Almost beleived i could test it. :D

Will this be included in 9.5 release?

Only win builds :frown:

Also I expected, 9544 would be based on 9624, so that the build-number would make sence. I does not now.

It won't be implemented in this Friday's build - information from Junyor.

No crash while Listing IRC-rooms. Which is 100%-crash.

I like this simple idea for embeding ogg-videos. Quite some time ago there were another build supporting <video>, so the idea si not new. - Information from Wildente

Thanks zoquete

How does it "work" ?

And when will be Opera international version? In Aplha builds or later?

SVG+VIDEO demo doesn't work in Opera, but works in special Firefox build...
Other tests and special Firefox builds you can find on this page.

Just copy the locales-folder, traslation are not finished yet.

So, why this build is based on Opera 9.5 ALPHA?

Makes more sense to me when you develop new functionalities on newer builds.

Let me know!
Thanks!

no more crash in opera linux :frown:

May be because this bata is very stable and the result after adding this new feature is not sure.

Anyway, in Betas, are mostly no new functionality added, right?

Wonderfull, I think (and hope) that it's could be the future of video on the web.
Really good job !!

This is excellent news! Fantastic work guys! The video tag is really impressive.

Is there any documentation for the 3d canvas element?

I probably won't be able to give this build a test: well done! Continuing to add features without losing the focus on usability is the holy grail of software development and you are very close. The recent tweaks to the UI of Kestrel might have escaped most but are extremely welcome. The panels "pane" no longer looks like an afterthought: I've found myself using it more and more having ignored it for years. Upon reflection: it was UI aspects of this that put me off! So thank you very much to whichever developer paid so much attention to detail on this. The only thing that's missing perhaps is some form of indication as which pane I'll see when I press SHIFT + F4?

I ask, too. Where is any classic installer?

I installed this build, but I received a message about a missing d3d9.dll. I use XP SP1. After I copied the d3d9.dll, I received a message about a conflict with ddraw.dll. What do I wrong? (I'm very wondering about this video-build) :frown:

Oh, I would love to see this in stable 9.50 so much!

Indee, you should update to SP2

Thanks, zoquete! I hope rather for a installable build.

@vinczej: d3d9.dll is part of Direct X 9. Do you have that installed?

Just say 'none' and there is no misinterpretation

the controls are much better than the previous 9.0 based release.
But you could spend a bit more making the design better, like using semi transparent glassy round like icons, preferably red, like hte Opera logo, and the controls lack a progress bar.... :/

Also, the controls are black by default, therefore they're not immediately visible in black videos like the beginning of this one

I wait for the next weekly (the sooner, the better). The current weekly has been doing pretty well, except for one page that doesn't work at all: https://rpilms.rpi.edu/

it gives a "Secure connection: fatal error (47)" on all the 9.5 weekly's, but works fine on Opera 9.24

I miss this Progress bar too and also Full screen feature.

I like that Opera can scale video very well, just try to zoom in or out.

There will be no classic installer for this build.
Only Classic installer would be better option for this build, because many people (me included) will not be able to install this build at work to test -- this installer requires admin privileges. :frown:

1. Please, add ability to save FLV files/OGG-Video from intv.ru, Youtube etc, like we do it with picture (Context/save as).

2. Return extensions to the files, which are situated in Cache folder.

Congrats on the video element though a language that refuses to even properly declare itself and adds very little functionality in addition to what we already have with XHTML1 or HTML4 holds little interest to me. CSS3 properties are much more important then HTML5 and currently Webkit leads the way with Gecko close behind. All we have in Opera is Opacity and even IE has that (even though it's implemented as a proprietary property it can correctly be implemented via conditional comments)...

Load my preview site in *Safari 3*, enable CSS3 at the top right via 'Site Options'. It's a good indication of how much CSS3 owns, if it would only be supported. Webkit's CSS3 goodness...

Impressed! Works really well. Even on the old notebook I just tested i on, performance was rather good! I guess the default UI will change/improve before release, so I won't say much about missing an "loading" indicator, progress bar or the lack of (any visible) playback controls before :hover...
One issue though; playback doesn't stop on back/next navigation...

Download this RAR archive, extract files, modify paths in operadef6.ini & run Opera.

Not related to this subject, but regarding proxies, we have a feature that enables a URL to be OMITTED from the proxy rules, how about having an option where only a selected/requested/defined URL is the ONLY site that would be affected by proxy rules??

Konqueror has the best reference to this feature as an example for implementation.

Thank you Opera Devs!!!:D

By heavensrevenge, # 9. November 2007, 07:02:39

heavensrevenge:

To achieve this functionalty you have to use proxy autoconfiguration files (PROXY.PAC)

Here you can find a pointer
http://www.davidpashley.com/articles/automatic-proxy.html

------------------

An another interesting question is what about SOCKS Proxy support?

Thanks, Junyor! The DirectX9 solved the problem!
This video-function is very impressive! Good work!
[EDIT]This new build have some positioning problems with UserJS-s (e.g. Ospell, textarea-resizer), that can affect other brwosing functions, too.

By vinczej, # 9. November 2007, 08:51:30

Would you implement this "function" in Kestrel Final Version or this build is an experiment for a far far future ??

really nice, I much prefer this to flash videos.

was surprised that there was a windows build and not a linux one, seeing ogg is supported by default in linux but not in windows.

By rhonnysparks, # 9. November 2007, 09:35:20

avatar
rhonnysparks, this is a build with native video support, if I am not mistaken. In other words, it doesn't matter if the video format is supported by the OS or not.
