New snapshot: Introducing advanced tab activation

, ,

This build implements a much requested option for all you users switching from other browsers.

You can now get that Safari, Firefox, IE or <insert alternative browser of choice here> tab handling in Opera, too.

To take advantage of that, simply change Preferences > Advanced > Tabs > "When closing a tab"
to your desired behavior:

Activate the last active (default)
Activate the tab to the right
Active the first tab opened from closing tab

Now start closing them tabs like there's no tomorrow!

Known Issues
  • Plug-ins crash Opera on UNIX/Linux.
  • Some plugins on Mac don't work at all.
  • Format selector when saving pages is broken.
  • Opera will not fetch more than 50 new IMAP messages in one go - you'll need to reset the account to get more.
  • Inline find stops working after entering one letter (using Ctrl/Cmd+F still works as expected).
  • Advanced tab activation currently does not work on Mac or UNIX/Linux.
Changelog
  • Added a new preference in Preferences > Advanced > Tabs which controls which tab to activate when closing a tab.
  • Fixed crash when composing mail with empty signature
  • Fixed crash when emptying history and VPS was disabled
  • css3 :target now works on targets identified using name attribute
  • New spatnav highlighting, similar to the one used in Opera Mini 4 and the Wii browser
  • iframes with contenteditable are now in in the tabbing order (Another gmail 2 fix)
  • 64-bit: Again possible to open (image) attachments in mail
  • Some more improvement to fast forward.
  • Opera Link now works better when using Work offline
  • Again possible to open links from widgets
  • UNIX: Drag and drop now works properly in the ION window manager

WARNING: These are development snapshots: they contain the latest changes, but they also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, they may not work at all.

Bug #306062 appears to be solved! :hat:  Thanks!

Linux build always crashes if a plugin is loaded :frown:

zoquete 11. February 2008, 12:03

why this flash does not work properly in Opera? http://www.avp-r.com/US/ Neither 9.25 works :frown:

Thanks so much

zix 11. February 2008, 12:10

Fine, but what about the (quicktime) plugins on the mac? They are broken for quite a time (3 builds?).

adze 11. February 2008, 12:16

Just to second FS0903, it should have been mentioned that plugins still crash unix Opera. I know it was mentioned in the last build's changelog and not stated as being fixed here but this is quite a big issue and probably should have been specifically mentioned that this problem remains unresolved.

thobi 11. February 2008, 12:18

thx. let's try it

Wade 11. February 2008, 12:19

is the "Plugins crash Opera on UNIX" fixed from the last build?

kiaM 11. February 2008, 12:22

@desperado666: www.derbauer.de works for me. Win XP SP2

FS0903 11. February 2008, 12:22

@adze: Yes, but is a little bit gambling, if you open a page and don't know if its load or not...only if ads on the site. I expected that the bug has a little bit more priority than advanced tab activation...

dfyfe 11. February 2008, 12:23

@desperado666

www.derbauer.de --> crash
works here.

Imac G5, PPC
Mac OSX 10.4.11

artstk 11. February 2008, 12:48

I guess, I've never said 'Thank you' guys, for fantastic job, you're doing. I use Opera for years and I can't imagine using another browser.

Opera 9.5 and everything you can do with CSS3, SVG etc. is sooo-oh splendid!
90% of people using Opera... webdesigner's dream;)
Thanks a lot!

marsu 11. February 2008, 12:55

Hi,

Three points:

1. Inline search with ".": I can enter only the first letter.
2. Loading time for the spead dial page is wrong.
3. Downloading a file with "Run" causes a "File not found Dlg".

M.

TheMajor 11. February 2008, 12:57

What's the difference between these? They both behave exactly the same here (move to last used tab).

- Activate the last active (default)
- Active the first tab opened from closing tab

can anyone try this link pls. i can't see the images with the latest build. seems they don't get loaded :frown: worked fine with the last build. i already tried to clear the cache which didn't work -> http://alltid.org/league/17230/ (i know the server is very slow at the moment).

edit: seems to work now. sorry, don't know why :frown: thx operic!

Added a new preference in Preferences > Advanced > Tabs which controls which tab to activate when closing a tab

Good job! Hope you'll add "Activate the tab to the left"!

Thanks a lot!

*waiting fo new ebuild in official Portage tree*

vinczej 11. February 2008, 13:11

Yes, TheMajor, you've right. For example if I open:

A , B > B1 , C , D
I close B.
- Activate the last active (default):
Jumps to D -> OK
- Active the first tab opened from closing tab
Jumps to D -> Wrong, because it should jump to B1, shouldn't it?

zoquete 11. February 2008, 13:15

I love the new spatnav feature, how can I set the color of it, if possible?

de2em 11. February 2008, 13:19

Why files lexicon.bx and lexicon.ax after conversion my mails format are so big?
Is this a bug, or is it OK?

operic 11. February 2008, 13:22

@thobi: I CAN see the images, seems everything is fine

allix 11. February 2008, 13:22

Will there be any qt4-builds for linux-x86_64?

Muzzlehatch 11. February 2008, 13:26

please, make static build for Intel-FreeBSD or shared for FreeBSD 7 with QT4

Weird - for me the only version of Opera I can get working on FreeBSD 7 is the linked one provided here. Works great apart from seg fault when importing .p12 certificates (applies to all Kestrel builds and also affects Mac OS)

toadbee 11. February 2008, 13:29

I can't get past the endless Master password loop. After entering about 20, Opera crashes. Had to revert back to the last snapshot... WinXP

beholder4096 11. February 2008, 13:32

INCOMPLETE FEATURE:
I'd be happy if developers would add complete features, when adding new features copied from other browsers. As noted by Sterkrig, the advanced tab activation sorely misses the "activate tab to the left" option!! WTF???

Please use some Opera ingenuity when adding features next time and give us a full set.

MartinezZ 11. February 2008, 13:36

http://cdr.cz - "wrong crashed layout" sice 9770

olli 11. February 2008, 13:39

beholder4096: I'd be happy if people here realize they are testing "snapshot" builds where there will be bugs and incomplete features..

p7389 11. February 2008, 13:49

The new snapshot broke browsing for me, error no-connect on all pages. So I'm here on IE (!) now, reverting one version...

nitro2k01 11. February 2008, 13:53

The new tab options are good. But I'd like to have a checkbox that says "Never focus transfers on tab close". The reason for this is that I always have transfers open and locked, but I never want it to get focus when I'm closing another tab. This is a real life annoyance for me in some situations.

kiaM 11. February 2008, 13:57

Animated gifs still broken. At least with Opera on Win XP SP2.
Example: http://www.nur-gifs.de/gifs/spinne.htm
Can anyone confirm?
Is there already a bug report on it?

zoquete 11. February 2008, 14:00

kiaM: works for me

lamarca 11. February 2008, 14:04

after submiting a post on forums, the page doesnt display your reply. it shows the top of the thread.
same happens if you click the arrow to go to the last post. can anyone confirm it?

clean install on winxp

@MartinezZ: It works fine for me

Some problems:

Trying to open a downloaded file from opera always returns "file not found" error. (on upgraded opera on windows XP and on fresh opera in tablet windows vista)

A new, fresh installation on my tabletPC (hp tc1100 with windows vista) pops a "mail initializaition error" all the times I open Opera (and there's no mail accounts in this fresh installation!)

And another thing: my tablet PC is barely unusable with Opera due to lack of "tip" support: when focusing a textarea or a input field (also opera's address bar and search fields) there's not the usual button that brings up the Tablet PC Input facility, that helps Tablet PC owners to enter text. Please, tell me that you'll work it out.. I'm LOST without opera! :/

sebt 11. February 2008, 14:26

Thanks! :D

As others have mentioned, it would be useful to know if plugins are fixed on Unix in this build. It seems to me that they are still broken.

Hopefully with the new tab activation we will finally silence the endless moaning that Operasoft never listens to its users, recognising that not everybody's pet feature can be made a priority.

Seb

Alpha-Toxic 11. February 2008, 14:36

I found some GIFs that are broken for me:
http://alpha-toxic.hit.bg/gifs/index.html
Is this only on my end?
XP SP2

kiaM 11. February 2008, 14:37

@Alpha-Toxic: I can confirm that. :-)
