Opera Desktop Team

Come and join us!

, ,

Opera continues to expand and we need more people on the Desktop team to make even better products in shorter time. If you already live in Scandinavia or if you'd like to try to work here, please check out our open positions. This is the right time to apply! If you know someone that should be working for a company like Opera, please point them to our job site.

In particular, we need C++ developers for Oslo, Norway and Linköping, Sweden. We don't care if you prefer Windows, Mac, Linux or FreeBSD, you will work under the environment of your choice. For instance, if you think you're the right person to make our Mac version integrate better with OS X: We may have a job for you. If you think we should go open source: This is as close as it gets, code Opera yourself and get paid for it

We also look for strong designers, both for graphics and interaction design for our consumer products (Desktop, Widgets, Mini...).

Sorry... I can't help you :frown:

borg 15. May 2008, 15:02

@GregLand: Sure you can: Use one of the above links to spread the word on Facebook or Digg or something

Opendix 15. May 2008, 15:04

arr.. why opera can't stay in switzerland? P:

borg 15. May 2008, 15:09

@Opendix: The closest we get is the Prague office

coxy 15. May 2008, 15:24

If someone could make one of these for Opera, I would buy them a drink.

Ever heard of The Mythical Man-Month?

borg 15. May 2008, 15:38

@d4n3: Where are the Mythbusters when you really need them?

sidfirex 15. May 2008, 16:03

@borg.. maybe 'coz many are at the "Opera Mobile" team's blog i recon.. trying to see if its a myth the blog actually exists (unless ofcourse the Opera Mobile 9.5 beta build is released..):wait: :wait:

anyway good luck on the recruitments!

nunop 15. May 2008, 16:03

I would love to work at opera as a software engineer, but I'm moving from Portugal to Sao Paulo, Brazil. Are there any plans for a new office there? :left:

It would have the benefit of being in a portuguese speaking country (sixth world major language) and it would also be the first one in latin america  ...

TriMN 15. May 2008, 16:24

Why is the post tagget with the "SPAM"-tag? :D

May I suggest one thing... Opera could move their HQ from Oslo to Trondheim.

... I know what you're thinking! You're thinking, "Ahh, that whould have been great!" Hmm, maybe you weren't thinking that, but I was.

andresruiz 15. May 2008, 16:28

Tell me when you need a marketing guy for Latin America or wherever :D , by now I keep writing every week on my Opera's Blog in spanish, if you understand and want to check it out...: http://www.andresruizsays.blogspot.com/

But if sometime you need more time from me promoting Opera, I'll be more than happy to join you !!

Fyrd 15. May 2008, 16:31

What are the chances of a person getting one of those cushy work-from-home jobs at Opera like Junyor has (IIRC)?

Fujiy 15. May 2008, 16:32

I live at Sao Paulo Brazil too. Works at Opera is my dream, but I just know .Net Framework...I admire C++ , but i dont have knowledge.

Workd at Opera is a great job, you will work with better developers!!

borg 15. May 2008, 16:56

@Fyrd: Not too great and most of the people in question have first worked for a long time at one of the main offices so they are truly part of the team.

Macallan 15. May 2008, 17:18

Damn, why didn't you post this before I moved to the US? :right:

GiraffePC 15. May 2008, 17:35

If there were a Classic Installer for this Alpha release of adverts, location could be chosen to suit the applicant.

miechu 15. May 2008, 19:14

Hi,

if you are interested here is my cv: http://miechu.pl/CV_Mieszko_Lassota.pdf

Khaled-Khalil 15. May 2008, 19:43

working at opera was always a dream for me, but i just graduated last july, now i am in my military service untill next december, now i am afraid after this post Opera will recive so many job requests more than it really needs, so i will be too late at december

anyway, good luck for those lucky ones who will get the job, you will not only enjoy coining the web, but something may be more or equally great, you will work with those great people at opera like Johan, Claudio, Charles, Olli, Junyor and all others we just like them from their posts here and there, working with them would certainly make a joyful envirenment.

Khaled-Khalil 15. May 2008, 20:16

as i said above, i cant leave Egypt until december, can i apply to the job now ?

lamarca 15. May 2008, 21:03

brasil is far away from scandinavia .......

taussick 15. May 2008, 21:10

Prague is great destination for me (I live in Czech Republic), but think I'm not skilled enough, I've just entered university studies x) The only project I'm participating in now is Miranda IM. Would be nice to offer some positions/easier ideas which would fit students

P.S.: but Interaction designer sounds fine  Some Junior positions would be cool

yitzhaq 15. May 2008, 21:19

Khalid: It's never too late, we're always looking for talented people :)

Khadgar 15. May 2008, 21:29

I'd love to apply, but I can't move (yet); I certainly can't move out of country. I'd certainly take a graphic design and interface design job at Opera if I didn't have to move too far away. At the moment the best I could offer is to work mostly from here and fly to Oslo or Mountain View or whatever for stints as I'm needed. I certainly hope you guys find someone to help with Mac OS X integration. That'd be a great job IMO.

nzMM 15. May 2008, 21:58

@coxy

We've already got that in Opera9.5, but i like how inquisitor separates the results based on their context.

kamalesh 16. May 2008, 01:20

@nzMM: Is that via userJS? Link?

wellofsouls 16. May 2008, 02:38

well, I'd LOVE to work at Opera, but I live in Beijing, China...

so do you have any need of oversea part-timers/volunteers or something? I'm working my best at spreading Opera in Beijing (well, in my company, at least...)

bleachfinder 16. May 2008, 03:45

I have abit in poll section becuase i can vote only 1 in 1 poll you too?

rejdi 16. May 2008, 06:12

Just another 2 years at university and I'm your man guys!

FalconHoffmann 16. May 2008, 13:03

Do you guys have an internship program?

Junyor 16. May 2008, 13:09

Patata 16. May 2008, 13:20

Even I live in Germany at moment, it whould be no problem for me to live and work in Norway or Sweden. The only problem is, that I don't really have any qualification to contribute...

wile-e-wonka 16. May 2008, 13:40

@wellofsouls: I notice Opera has an office in Beijing.

GreyWyvern 16. May 2008, 13:46

What what what??? There are no openings for puffins?

MisterNobody 16. May 2008, 16:16

Waiting Russian office...

Ace2016 16. May 2008, 19:25

Oh please hire someone to work on bug reports, just someone to go through them and investigate them on all platforms. I submitted a bug about panning while zoomed not working in web pages in linux a long time ago, it was when opera 9 started weeklies back when opera 8 was the official version, the bug happened right after you switched to the new build system, whatever that was. Oh and digg is broken, i have to use firefox for a bit

stoffix 16. May 2008, 20:19

even after a bug gets confirmed, it might take a while to fix.
there may be other more important bugs, or maybe it is a complicated bug to fix.

when something doesn't work, I use Opera 9.27

andresruiz 16. May 2008, 21:49

@stoffix
When something doesn't work, I don't use 9.27 because is older; so complex things that fail on Kestrel won't work on Merlin.

iliiad 17. May 2008, 09:03

working to spread and/or make Opera, my personal favorite browser, even better and getting paid for it must be the best dream for me, too bad Opera doesn't have an office in my place :frown:

FalconHoffmann 17. May 2008, 14:38

I'm in the second year of my graduation, I go to the University of São Paulo (USP) Brazil, it is one of the best in the country and the most renowned internationaly. Since I'm in the second year I mostly got experience in C and data structures (lists, binary trees, graphs). Also, before entering college I did a one and a half year technical course where I learned a little of obeject orientation programming (unfortunately with Delphi and VB6) and database (SQL using Oracle). I'm willing to relocate to Europe for an internship, do you think that Opera has a place for me?

olmari 18. May 2008, 02:22

FalconHoffmann, you never know if you won't try  Go send an open application if nothing of current job positions meet you

konic 18. May 2008, 11:33

Well, this all kinda strange in nowdays (!?)
I mean, why (internet related) developer has to be in certain particular place ?
Don’t we have enough ways to pass/deliver/and so on.. throughout the world whatever needs to be shared ?
Including money, to begin with

olmari 18. May 2008, 13:48

Sure peoples can be around globe for certain types of job, but do you think Opera software or any other company hires peoples just "over internet"? I'd invite persons first to local place, and if he/she is good for the task and rediable then he/she could get to home country and work from there... My 2 cents

Ace2016 18. May 2008, 14:50

@@stoffix : so you want me to use opera 8.54 released over 2 years ago??? -_-

I think the opera devs are spending most of their time on the paid version for mobiles rather than the free desktop version which is understandable i guess

@@olmari: And who is going to be paying for the flights and accommodation?

Just because you see someone for a few hours or days doesn't mean you can trust them with access to opera's source code ;)

stoffix 18. May 2008, 15:30

no, I haven't said that, it just bothers me when people complain abaut the latest snapshot, and say they have to switch browser, when opera 9.27 works just fine.

but of course, if you want to use opera 8.54, why should you use something else?

Ace2016 19. May 2008, 07:25

opera 8.54 is the last version in which the bug is not present, after than the entire 9.0 to 9.27 to the snapshots all have this bug.

yitzhaq 19. May 2008, 22:08

Ace2016: Not only do we have people working on handling incoming bug reports, we have an entire department more or less dedicated to it. :)
As well as a host of volunteers and other people helping out, so not to worry. Everyone's voice is heard, and all bugs that are reported are looked at and analyzed. Not all of them can be fixed right away of course, but trust me, we don't just ignore stuff.

As for resource allocation, the people who work in the desktop department (most Opera people you will see comment in here) work only on desktop. There are other departments that work on mobile, devices and other platforms.

Ace2016 20. May 2008, 13:21

oh ok, but 2 years is a bit too long, you must be getting lots of bug reports

GreyWyvern 20. May 2008, 16:23

I still have open bugs from four years ago; and I guarantee some of the more veteran members of my.opera have even older ones. It's all about priorities; you just have to accept that there are other more important fixes which need to be made.

e-mak 21. May 2008, 11:03

I have dropped my CV on Opera job website and hoping for the best.

fabiao 21. January 2009, 18:22
