Stability is this week's word

, ,

Lots of work has gone into stability this last week. Other highlights are new package names (see details here), and fully localized UNIX packages.

WARNING: These are development snapshots: they contain the latest changes, but they also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, they may not work at all.

Known issues
  • Some dialogs do not have initial focus
  • [Bug 327180] Dragonfly does not work when JavaScript is disabled
  • [Bug 324377] Save Linked Content As fails sporadically

Changelog
  • Address field buttons are now updated correctly in all circumstances
  • Fixed international installer on Windows
  • Fixed several Wand issues

Lots of stability fixes:
  • crash on digg.com
  • crash with master password
  • crash on google maps
  • crash on a rather common javascript function...
  • crash when printing
  • crash when reloading a page...

Mail
  • Fix for Apple Mail import.
  • Filters and folders are now distinguishable
  • Attachments in multipart/related body part are now recognized properly
  • Reverted special handling of Delete in filter views - 'Del' always moves to Trash bin, 'Shift+Del' now deletes completely without using the Trash bin.

Several fixes to the undo functionality, such as e.g.:
  • undo after marking all as read should work now.
  • undo now reverts marking as spam
  • undo removing from filter

Windows specific:
  • Fixed painting of some SVG

UNIX specific:
  • It is now possible again to drag'n'drop URLs
  • All packages are now fully localized!

Thank you but Opera has a bug tracking system to let them know what is still broken. They generally don't need a reminder. I filed a bug that encompasses what you are talking about. Bug #329614 - It is a general problem that affects all flash and possibly other plugins. I have some internal flash apps that are broken as well.

Good Job

that rivals Safari's speed

A quick question - What .deb file do I need to grab to install on Debian Sid? I'm used to either using the deb.opera.com repos or grabbing the *6-shared-qt files.

Cyro 20. May 2008, 17:34

Congrats!
Stability is the key. I hope you guys deliver more snapshots like this one.
Keep up the good job!

Tommy A. Olsen 20. May 2008, 17:46

grogge, ionbulgar: Any modifications you have done to search.ini are not overwritten. If they are then it is a bug. Any modification done in the the installation directory will be overwritten, but not if you modify it in the preferences directory.

Tommy A. Olsen 20. May 2008, 17:48

The Seeker: gcc4-shared-qt3

TheSeeker11 20. May 2008, 17:52

Thanks toman, much appreciated  I'd just been doing some Googling and found some more info here regarding the new builds.

porneL 20. May 2008, 17:57

undo after marking all as read should work now.

Finally! After all these years! Thank you!

Andrew 20. May 2008, 18:05

Thanks! You are the best!!!

But there is a regression in account at http://nozbe.com

Look, please:
http://aerbas.com/images/20080520200240_nozbe-opera.png

Works fine in previous build.

PS WinXP, SP3, clear install.

Mika Takala 20. May 2008, 18:06

Desktop Team RSS feed still hasn't updated with this post. Is it broken or has it been changed?

Thanks for the build, btw.

beholder4096 20. May 2008, 18:12

Warning!!
I do not recommend this build for those, who use test builds for regular e-mail in Opera. Opera started re-download all my e-mails that has been left on the server ("never delete from server"), although the messages have been downloaded before. This was up to 1700 messages, some with big attachments, Opera mail in this build was thus unusable. The same thing happened, when I tried to delete all the messages in the trash.

There is something up with M2 in this latest build, so much for stability...

I'll have to re-check with a backup version of Opera that worked ok, because there may have been a change in the mailserver that I use (they change the hw and sw). It will take time...

AwareSoul 20. May 2008, 18:18

Hello fearphage,

Will userjs scripts from the site below work in this build? Thanks in advance.

The "sniffing" script is no problem, the problem is another one:
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;URL=http://www.volkswagen.gr"

Notice the missing ">". That's bad coding, but it's not a problem for IE or FF, because afterwards <head> is closed, thus it's logic that the meta tag must be closed. The other browsers simply ignore it, Opera interprets the meta tag even though it's not finished (and redirects every 0ms). That's forbidden.

thanx for great browser, especially for pocket pc version (9.5 beta) which works great on my HP paq 214.almost as good, as desktop version.
using your browser for a few years now. started with netscape,ie, than firefox.
long live opera,
thx again.

Saulo Benigno 20. May 2008, 19:03

niceeeeee.. my 'b' key crash-bug was fixed... nice work guys

btw, betanews.com works for me, on vista sp1.

Ferris 20. May 2008, 19:18

Do you know if Google Docs, and or Office Live Workspace will be fully supported in the final of 9.5?

Thanks

konas 20. May 2008, 19:42

Hi. I have just installed the 1971 build x64 on Hardy. But in Help/About it says build 1737. If I run opera as root then it says build 1971. Why is this happening? (also the acid3 scors differ when run as root and as normal user). Before insalling the new build I did uninstall the previous one

Thanks :-)

That site is old and the scripts are unsupported. There is a userjs forum now but no userjs repository currently... I think 100% of the scripts from that site will work because they make no use of xpath since it was not avialable when they site was operational.

Yes, this is definitely latest build problem. 9945 has no problem whatsoever. Please fix! I cannot test!

As Toman said, that should not happen. Doesn't the search.ini in your profile folder contain a google entry with ID=1 and Deleted=1?

If you are not too hasty, you should see a hint in a tooltip that explains you have to hold 'Shift' to drag items to toolbars.

Bartek Sumowski 20. May 2008, 20:10

Will we ever see support for Google Mail UI 2?

wile-e-wonka 20. May 2008, 20:22

With regard to Betanews, here is what the problem was (for me at least; I can't speak for the prior poster who was vague): the title portion of the page would load, but it stopped there. All content below the top navigation/title portion would never load. I had this problem with the prior build (I'm on Windows 2000, SP4), but I did not have the problem when I tried it just now on today's build.

Kamalesh 20. May 2008, 20:31

CNN video not working again in build 4825.

Gmail2 worked great, until Googlers just updated it a few days ago. (In-page progress bar when loading first time.) Now Opera hangs while "still working" when trying to do anything.

Andres 20. May 2008, 20:33

I don't know why and/or how, Windows Live Mail (Live Mode) is working* on my Opera 9.27 and 9.5 browsers. Anybody knows?

*works but it has some bugs.

Usually Opera only worked on the "classic mode" and "Live Mode" was only available for IE and FF.

wand icon is deactivated on studivz.net!
can anyone confirm?

Kamalesh 20. May 2008, 20:47

Napster store is loading fine in build 4825, but gets script errors when previewing any 30-sec clip.

glecko 20. May 2008, 20:59

with regards to BETANEWS, I got it working by disabling javascript... ths seemed to work for a few sites that i previously had problems with.

Completely awesome build on Mint!!! It is so fast! Thanks!!!!! :D

And a definite improvement on Mandriva 2008.1 (just not as fast) Thanks again! :D

João David 20. May 2008, 21:05

Yay! I'm sorry devs, but this build contain all 100% of the bugs that the previous builds had. So, keep up the good work.

P.S.: I still have no icons at all in Windows Vista and unfortunately, i'm seeing that this bug is going also to the final release.

It is the Masking as FireFox I think that is what works for me but with some bugs also

berend ytsma 20. May 2008, 21:30

@stranded:you should ask Google

Andres 20. May 2008, 21:35

Does anybody have problems with:

I have problems not only with Kestrel but also with 9.27, page lose format.

I didn't mask Opera as FF or IE, I'm using Opera with default settings and without any user js.

When you click on any link in Gmail 2.0 - Opera hangs up until the gmail page is loaded... That suxx..

I'd rather merge odd 'bookmark visited time' with visited links (bookmarks are sort of links).

noroslo 20. May 2008, 23:34

Opera dev team thanks for your hard work. You may want take in consideration to add
1) "some userjs may not work at all in this build"
2) "some pop3 eMails maybe download twice"
3) "using content blocker may make some sites not working properly"
to your know issues list on top of this blog.

Bill P 20. May 2008, 23:43

YouTube (and I assume any flash) does not display video, just audio. This is for both the 9. and 10. Flash-plugin, both of which worked fine last release (yesterday).

Also, if I close a running YouTube tab the plugin wrapper goes to 100% (or close), this is also a regression.

Running openSuse x64

blinkybill 21. May 2008, 00:10

Hi,

Thanks for the new build and it seems to run snappier.
Something I have noticed and not sure if it is just my
machine here. If you go to a secure site either a Extended
Validation site or one that is secure but doesn't have Extended
Validation when you first load the site nothing appears in the address bar. Only if you refresh the page does it then appear.
I thought it might be my skin so I changed back to the default one
but still get the same thing.

cheers
blinky

Case 21. May 2008, 00:13

Upgraded today to GCC4 x86_64 build on Arch64 and immediately noticed that on quite a few pages, miscelaneous fonts (including very "basic" fonts like Verdana or Georgia) are just replaced with Arial. The necessary fonts are installed, Opera sees them (means I can see and select them in Font preferences), I can force them (i.e. as Web page normal font), but if they're just used in a page design, Opera replaces them with Arial. Tried enabling/disabling core X fonts, no dice. Even static builds do this. I've missed a few builds lately, but I've now backtraced that this started with build 1962 - any build before that works fine.

EDIT: Oh, and I've just found out that if I disable Xft fonts in opera:config, the correct fonts are displayed too - just ugly looking, but correct.

Kristoffer 21. May 2008, 00:20

to all of you posting bugs here:
file a bug report to the bugtracker please

Case 21. May 2008, 00:30

Well, reporting bugs would be much more enjoyable experience if we could at least see that we're not going to report something hundreds of other people have already reported...:/ (Yeah, I know, can't be done right now, but stil...:/ )

ayespy 21. May 2008, 00:48

KUDOS to the Desktop team for attention to detail.

I reported two problems with M2 last week, and both are fixed in this build.

.rtf files are no longer re-appended with a .dat extension in MS email clients (this was a single-build regression, and already fixed).

Likewise, the last build could not retrieve email from one of my POP3 servers if it had also SENT that email. Also, fixed.

Obviously, things can't all be repaird this quickly, but I want to give props for the Desktop team on keeping my M2 worthy of being my default email client.

Yay.
