Opera Desktop Team

A lighter EV

, ,

We have been very strict on our EV implementation - the rationale behind our strict "It ain't EV 'til it's EV, all EV" has been extensively documented by Yngve in a few articles.

However, we are now moving towards a less strict implementation - a consistent user experience is important throughout the wide palette of browsers that implemented EV. At the recent face-to-face meeting with the Web Security Context Working Group, we have agreed with other vendors on this behaviour as an industry standard. You will now get the green padlock, signalling the presence of an EV certificate, if the top level document is served with strong TLS and EV, and all included elements are served at least with strong TLS. For details, please head over to Yngve's article.

In other news, Dragonfly guys have started making snapshots as well, with their first one released yesterday. On the desktop side we have started persistently caching the Dragonfly application so that it loads much faster, and can be used offline, after restarting Opera.

Also, our Core team has started a blog - head over to the new Core Team blog to follow the cool news and latest development at Opera's heart.

WARNING: These are development snapshots: they contain the latest changes, but they also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, they may not work at all.

Known issues:
  • [Bug 327180] Dragonfly does not work when JavaScript is disabled.
  • [Bug 324377] Save Linked Content As fails sporadically.
  • [Bug 332406] The drop-downs in the various dialogs open behind the dialog on Mac.
  • Netvibes.com fails to load in this Windows build.

Changelog:
  • New EV status policy.
  • Fixed a crash when quitting with master password dialog open.
  • Fixed a history navigation crash.
  • Fixed a crash related to Dragonfly.
  • Fixed handling of local resource files when installing Opera in a location with special characters in the path.
  • Fixed an issue where Wand shortcuts stopped working after history navigation.
  • Fixed filtering of messages in the error console - the filter will also apply to future events.
  • Fixed initial focus in dialogs.

Mac-specific:
  • Fixed plugin focus issues on rtl.de.
  • Fixed an issue where the window doesn't activate completely when clicked.
  • Fixed repaint issues when pages are made shorter.
  • Fixed an issue where text gets cut off in SELECT element.

UNIX-specific:
  • Fixed some font selection issues.
  • Fixed some mouse panning issues.
  • Fixed listing of files in the GTK filechooser.

Windows-specific:
  • Fixed default Save and Open location.
  • Fixed a registry corruption of values used when other applications open Opera, caused by the classic installer.
  • Fixed listing of files in the Open dialog.
  • Saving web pages now correctly adds the extension.

odd rendering of page
http://feeds.feedburner.com/thesecrethub/GVQl

when clicking "no"

also
have to click "no" 2x in 9.50

can't dload this:
http://www.icetv.com.au/cgi-bin/epg/iceguide.cgi?op=topguide&tapver=999999&save_as_file=checked&save_as_filename=icetv_epg.txt

find - <match whole word only>, reported on bug wizard many times; probably a low priority

didn't record bug report number

search for the word "the ", note the space
http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2008/05/23/a-lighter-ev
see how it highlights areas the don't contain "the ".
this occurs in 9.27 & 9.50

just reported this
bug-332686

Kyle Baker 24. May 2008, 03:30

@g4qb
Bug number for the find bug? Also happens on this page when searching for "have ". It looks like it happens to any text that leads up to a hyperlink (with a space between) if the same situation occured previously (up the page).

In the test cases I did ("the ", "have ", "new ") this is what happens.

blinkybill 24. May 2008, 04:24

Hi,

The new build seems very fast here. I don't think lowering
the ev standard is a good idea but I think people who are coming
from using other browsers will at least see a uniform standard of
verification and make it some what less confusing.
Also on this point I am hoping that also all the colours and icons
for each stage of verification can become standard so its the same
no matter what browser you use.

@tsarhan,
I don't get any warnings on any of the sites you listed?.
Are there any site that shows the distributing malicious
software warning besides the site tsarhan pointed out?.
I noticed the new Firefox 3.0 RC1 has this sort of warning
besides the one for phishing sites and hopefully Opera will
implement this feature in the near future.

cheers
blinky

Just noticed that "previous step" and "next step" don't work in Google Maps' visual directions in Build 4833/Leopard. Click on one of the steps in thet directions, and when the Street View direction pops up, click on "next" or "previous" and you'll notice it changes in placement, but the photo doesn't get updated.

This is because xpath is broken in windows.

Amen. Bug #332581

opera:config#SecurityPrefs|StrictEVMode seems to remain usefull:

arghwashier 24. May 2008, 07:30

@ kamalesh, confirmed on linux, though I haven't seen it here before. The artifacts appear when scrolling.

ubuntu hardy/nvidia 6600gt

edit: this scrolling problem is too annoying, back to 1971 for me
edit2: no problems on mandriva 2008.1 spring though with build 1983
edit3: okay I installed the static qy4 version (which is installed in ubuntu too) and I do get the artifacts in mandriva too

Hans Bendiksen 24. May 2008, 07:55

This build spikes my CPU to 100%. As was the case with 9.2x for me.

But 9.5 has been a joy until now, so I have reverted back to build 10005 and the CPU hogging problem is gone.

I really hope whatever changes in this build that is causing this problem don't persist through to the final... awww

On Vista SP1.

MetalRaise 24. May 2008, 10:19

Somehow, scrolling up and down on image-heavy pages is really slow and jerky. I installed build 9981 for a direct comparison and it works perfectly well, for example on deviantART user pages. In 10014 it's so slow, I first thought something's wrong with my computer.

(10014 is, of course, a clean install, as always.)

Can anyone confirm?

Шуйский Николай [krigstask, Ŝtérkrìg] 24. May 2008, 10:28

Damn that broken RSS! I've missed a whole day (-:E

Hans Bendiksen 24. May 2008, 10:34

@ MetalRaise: Did you compare CPU usage?
10014 was real sluggish on scrolling 'cause of the high CPU usage on my system.

coolmyll 24. May 2008, 10:38

No netvibes, no install

Mateusz 24. May 2008, 10:48

http://www.formula1.com/ looks little strange - it has too long scroll bar. Could anyone confirm that?

ouzoWTF 24. May 2008, 11:13

confirmed @ formula1.com

edit: also the navigation is broken. if you chose something of the subnavigation, the submenu does not disappear, when hovering over an other part of the navigation.

firstnight 24. May 2008, 11:15

Saving webpages:

While the 'save as' dialog does now add extensions, attempting to save 'HTML with images' saves only the html.

This was a fresh install with the 'classic installer' of build 10014 on Windows98, with OperaConfig set to save images in the same folder as the html, rather than using a separate images folder.

MetalRaise 24. May 2008, 11:42

@ hansbendiksen:

Yes, I also noticed an increase in CPU usage.
I really hope it won't stay like this, as performance-wise 10014 is the worst build since months, at least on my system. :worried:

mulB 24. May 2008, 12:09

This Webpage is not building up correctly and hangs: www.cinema.de
e.g.: http://www.cinema.de/film_aktuell/neuimkino
or: http://www.cinema.de/film_aktuell/neuimkino/film?typ=inhalt&film_id=787590

Thanx so far!

PS: Still hoping for 'zoon-adjustment' in Sideprefs...

I'm using windows and netvibes both right now. I'm not sure what is/was supposed to be broken. (XP SP3 32 bit)

berend ytsma 24. May 2008, 12:51

@fearphage:going to www.netvibes.com results in a screen with the text
"please wait a moment"
This is even in the Known issues list.

Broken XPath prevents loading of netvibes. And as you you have applied XPath patch...

Mateusz 24. May 2008, 13:40

I've noticed some strange behavior on this site: http://cda.pl/
When I'm using progress bar as a "pop-up at bottom" it jumps up and down while loading new page.

PS Sorry for my bad English, I hope you understand what I mean.

that's a known issue.

lamarca 24. May 2008, 15:53

i could delete only 'history of typed-in addresses' until someone had a brillant idea to merge the 'history of typed-in addresses' and 'clear history of visited links' with 'clear history of visited pages'. if i check that option, all my 'history of visited pages' are gone as well.
now i have to edit the file opera.dir to get rid of the typed-in addresses.

Rijk 24. May 2008, 15:59

About the EV changes: read what Yngve has to say; I try to give my explanation of why the change isn't so bad in a comment there.

Ahhh i see now. Mootools is using doc.evaluate.

Removing individual entries was never possible from the UI. So if you want what the Delete Private Data dialog did for typed addresses earlier, just delete the entire opera.dir file. The DPD dialog becomes a bit more readable, for the purpose of 'hiding your tracks' it doesn't make sense to have to click multiple checkboxes there.

lamarca 24. May 2008, 16:17

that's not my case, i always deleted the whole typed addresses by going to delete private data and checking the old and good option.

Originally posted by Rijk:

arent those options checked by default?

oh well, if i want to keep ''history of visited pages' i have to get used to edit/delete opera.dir from now on.

Mattux 24. May 2008, 16:54

It seems that the option "watch in high quality" available on some YouTube videos does not work.
Can anyone confirm ?

Mateusz 24. May 2008, 17:24

@Mattux:
Confirmed on Windows XP SP3 32 bit.
//Edit: YouTube Player Beta switch also doesn't work...

Stahn Aileron 24. May 2008, 17:56

Sk0l 24. May 2008, 18:05

Well, I think totally unnecessary merge the options "history of typed-in addresses" and "clear history of visited links" in only one ("clear history of visited pages").
I usually use only the option "history of typed-in addresses", and now... ?

Please, rather than remove options, give us more options.
Anyone who wants to remove the two "types", mark the two "types", but please do not merge two different functions.

MetalRaise 24. May 2008, 18:55

I have to agree with lamarca and Sk0l regarding the options in the Delete Private Data dialog window. Not that it is of any interest, though...

wirusek 24. May 2008, 19:12

max 24. May 2008, 19:46

hmmm how about silverlight in opera? does anybody know something actual?

Krzysztof Trybowski 24. May 2008, 20:35

Here is an idea: how about allowing more pages on quick dial if screen resolution permits? So what, that all digits are taken, I access those pages with mouse anyway. :D

lamarca 24. May 2008, 20:50

sk0l and metalraise: thanks for the support. perhaps we should start a topic on beta testing forum like someone did when the start bar was removed.

mike 24. May 2008, 20:59

I just submitted [Bug 332666]

I also find that all of the 9.5 releases so far have been very unstable and crash sporatically. This usually happens either when I first open the browser or when I begin to type an address manually into the address bar (happens about 1 time in 5). I hope that this gets sorted out before 9.5 is officially released.

Tweak speeddial.ini yourself (-;E

MetalRaise 24. May 2008, 22:31

Well, I guess it might be worth a try...

lamarca 24. May 2008, 22:52

metalraiser: could you please be so kind as to start the topic? i am not good at words.

illiad 24. May 2008, 23:02

yeah the startup is fast, etc... BUT!

- even scrolling spikes the cpu..
- press 'rightclick' - it takes about a second for a menu to appear!! much the same with others functions, including midclick, drag scrollbar.....

http://www.smiston.com/ for example... (on windows 2000)

in 9.27, and 9.5(9981) this takes 3 seconds to display..(using watch, NOT progressbar)

in build 10005 & 10014 this takes 6 seconds!!

- If you think this may be some 'use hardware acceleration' that is neded, please tell...

webtax 24. May 2008, 23:26

when entering http://operawatch.com/category/news/opera-tutorial
then entering a "comments" in any entry in the blog, if i press "back" in the browser to go back to the main page again, opera crashes.

it has happened in other pages as well.

can anyone reproduce this?

Kyle Baker 25. May 2008, 02:03

Google Reader still isn't rendering in Speed Dial when there are no new feed items available and the default page setting is for new items.

Ferris 25. May 2008, 06:57

With this build and the last the forums do not work correctly at http://hardforum.com Specifically I cannot get past the login, it logs in says thank you for logging in then kicks me back to the log in screen. This is a pretty popular hardware/computer site.
Running Windows Xp

Thanks

Claus Berghammer 25. May 2008, 08:30

- "Saves As" dialog still doesn't add file-extension if filename contains dots

- For the moment, no missing Favicons in Bookmarkpane

Krzysztof Trybowski 25. May 2008, 08:39

@Sterkrig:
oh my! THAT WORKS! Thank you, I wasn't aware that I could have more speeddials. I have added two columns, since I have a wide display.

@ALL
By the way:
there is a problem with www.pcworld.pl in this build. Clicking BACK usually doesn't work. And each page adds two entries to history (looks sort of redirection, but I think it isn't). I have noticed the same problem on at least one other site (the name of which I can't remember).

Buchtic 25. May 2008, 10:25

@WildEnte: thx for tips, but problem is, when is opera installed in another then default folder (X:\Program Files\Opera)

illiad 25. May 2008, 12:28

kyleabaker: 'find in page' works *perfectly*.. even the 'part text/link' bit...

and the *same* in source editor(dragged 'find in page' to it) - gets nothing at all.. ??????
