Well, I'm a bit disappointed to be honest.

First, the RC testing was ridiculously short. Then, loading up 9.5 over the top of 9.25, I noticed problems within minutes:

Unix versions get "double close widgets" when using a tabbed interface - literally, there are two each of close, minimize, maximize buttons while a tab is open (not including the application's ones). One set does *absolutely* nothing. And at one point I managed to get the working set to disappear and had to restart Opera to get it back.

The new skin is a bit hideous and very monochromatic, especially when you open Mail. Why aren't new messages highlighted in a colour, rather than just bolded by default? I can't get back to the skin I had (the larger, coloured buttons etc.) now.

I managed to crash it within about an hour (just random browsing, not stress testing) but was unable to catch any debug output. I also had a random hang, and had to kill the process to continue.

Talks of speed improvements don't seem to translate down to low-end systems where it actually performs identically or worse... a 600MHz, 128Mb RAM machine shows absolutely no performance improvements.

Despite having the toolbar setup that I wanted, I had to redo most of the options again (although it obviously picked up the settings because it had other things) and sometimes "improvise" with the new options to make it similar.

The new dialogs for secure sites with bad certificates and for downloads are too over-simplified for my tastes.

I haven't even tried to do a lot of mail or anything yet. My PC's will be staying on 9.25 for a while until all these silly niggles are sorted out. This is the *first* time I've ever put off upgrading to an Opera "stable" version (been using it since pre-6.0-ish), despite always testing new versions carefully first to ensure compatibility.

Yes, there's a lot that is new but the things that have been missed are ludicrously simple and could have been fixed in about an hour on a developers PC.

Tracio 12. June 2008, 13:49

Any reason behind the new (and confusing) filename scheme for *nix builds and the messy FTP directory content?. There aren't deb shared builds under the shared/ directory, same goes for static debs and then we have the confusing filenames for shared deb packages that appear under the general ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/950/final/en/i386/ : the etch-qt3_i386 is the one which works for Sid and Lenny but it's only named "etch".

Quite messy, especially considering that it's against the new filename scheme used on the latest snapshots (gcc4-shared-qt3_i386 , gcc4-qt4_i386, gcc295-static-qt3_i386 ).

"Which is which Pt.III" is badly needed...or rather go back to the previous filename scheme which was just fine.

Max 12. June 2008, 13:58

i thought, it is too early to release =|

Naelphin 12. June 2008, 14:01

Is this the same as RC1?

thobi 12. June 2008, 14:05

hey there,
thanks for the new release. i'm surprised that it has been just two days since the RC. perhaps a bit to early.
i have to admit, that there seem to be a couple of "problems" which might have been solved before.
but as always i'm trying to do my personal best to spread out the latest release to the rest of the world :-)

h2cus with new snapshots!

Cyro 12. June 2008, 14:06

Congratulations Desktop Team!
You rock! :king:

Oleksandr(Alexander) Shturmov 12. June 2008, 14:09

Well, it's rarely Opera weekly builds crash with me, but the final crashed 2 minutes after i downloaded it! This is rediculous, unfortunately I can not quite remember why it crashed, but it started with CPU peaking to 100% and ram to about 700 megs(Vista perhaps??). However I have made a video of the bugs i found in the next 5 minutes, I uploaded it here: http://www.danu.dk/videos/opera_9.5.html

Paulina 12. June 2008, 14:09

Firstly, great opera build, as always

Secondly - why so hurry with the release? I thought that opera will be released AFTER Firefox 3, and (of course) it will be hell lot better than ff.

What's more - why there's no version linked to qt4? snapshots linked to qt4 worked the best for me, especially because I have some problems with polish characters on translation (some of them are missing, for example, in the menu tabs names, there are squares instead) - with qt4 version there was no such problems.

And when I read the rest of the comments... I think that you've just made the same mistake as Mandriva did with 2008.1 Spring release - it was released in hurry, before Ubuntu and the release is... well, a bit wanting. But, I may be wrong.
In my opinion, RC2 wouldn't be so stupid idea as you may think

Anyway, why old skin is not available any more? A lot of people noticed that in RC and they said they want it back!

netlord 12. June 2008, 14:12

well

nice release, but i have two problems

when im moving the mouse over a link the popup showing the link isn´t working..

i cant open the sidebar by moving the mouse on the left side of the screen.

can anybody confirm these?

Andres 12. June 2008, 14:12

With all respect, it seems like a Joke, I can't understand than Firefox 3 Betas or Release Candidates uses less RAM and have been more optimized than Opera 9.5 surprise-final release---2 days after 1st release candidate.
Opea and its deadlines.
Even the changelog is a last-moment work; in 9.5 Beta 2 changelog says "changes since Beta 1" so you expect to find on Final Release something like "Changes since Release Candidate" or "Changes since Beta 2" but not, you read "Changes since 9.27" :clown: Bad joke.

Sin2x 12. June 2008, 14:13

Pure awesomeness...

Graham 12. June 2008, 14:15

If you want the old default Opera skin, then you can always download the Opera 9 Classic Skin 2, which has recently been added to the list of skins you can download in the Appearance dialogue. The new skin does look nice and promising, and I'm sure many will like it, but I'm content with the previous skin, at least for now. Thanks for putting it up there so that us old sticks in the mud can change back to the old ways.

Arnt 12. June 2008, 14:16

 :hat: I have used Opera since version 3 and with every release I get amazed. Not bad. Not bad at all! :hat:

chivitli 12. June 2008, 14:26

I upgraded from Opera 9.27 and noticed following with native skin: there is no contrast between active and inactive tabs (pic: http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/7514/contrastwu2.jpg ), contrast should be as in previous version, or like it is on this pic between 'tabs' of IE and Opera. Also, when tab loads in background, it doesn't become blue as it was before, and therefore you cannot know when background tab has loaded fully.
And how to turn off Opera icon next to clock? I was looking everywhere...

A, one more thing: if page is loading slowly (some facebook pages for example), I can't scroll until it loads, it freezes!

I go continue experimenting...

johnnysaucepn 12. June 2008, 14:27

Even the changelog is a last-moment work; in 9.5 Beta 2 changelog says "changes since Beta 1" so you expect to find on Final Release something like "Changes since Release Candidate" or "Changes since Beta 2" but not, you read "Changes since 9.27"

Which is as it should be - betas upgrade from betas, finals upgrade from finals. This is normal.

Opera still using less memory under more intensive use for me than the FF3 RC.

Johnny 12. June 2008, 14:28

flash now works seamlessly in linux!!! :D (bug: 336691)
which is fantastic seeing it didn't work at all in the RC.
what was the topping on those pizzas? p:

top job!

a changelog between this and the RC would be nice though...

also does this mean the weeklies are gonna be more rare?

The link address is showing in the status bar. Only when the status bar is disabled (it was by default in 9.2) will the link address show in a tooltip.
The panel toggle can be enabled again if you like, customize it.

Bill P 12. June 2008, 14:33

@Rijk - I was asking about acid2 not 3 and wondering if it still mattered and if so why is my result bad (running 64bit Linux). Also kyleabaker says it works fine for him.

@kyleabaker see:
see: http://my.opera.com/Bill_P/albums/showpic.dml?album=10633&picture=7553975

UPDATE: acid2 displays correctly if I login as a different user indicating there's something in my config screwing up the test - any ideas? it's not proxy or ftw as i shut them off.

@Bill_P, looks very much like you have Fit To Width on (View menu). Try switching it off and see if it makes a difference.

Secunia's test is crashing Opera 9.5!

Werdel 12. June 2008, 14:51

I've read so many negative comments about this release was a rush, now I'm not even sure whether to try Opera 9.50 or not. After the first few snapshots Kestrel was so promising, the major speed improvement, lots of new features, but stability and usability are one of the most important things for me. And now I'm reading how many sites doesn't work (which worked perfectly with 9.27)... I'm a little uncertain...

freekey 12. June 2008, 15:00

Well.. Finally... :L

Thanks a lot anyway!!!

Ilja N. 12. June 2008, 15:00

Nice! Looking forward to "What's new in Opera 10"... Or? What's next to test?p:

cybpsychdsync 12. June 2008, 15:02

does any1 encountered problems with the Feeds (RSS)?

Try this -> http://www.anandtech.com/rss/articlefeed.aspx

1) The dialog box asked 3 times to confirm subscribe (some feed pops 2 times)

2) Click Yes, Yes, No [or any 2 YES combination]

3) Click the Feed menu. It'll show 2 entries.

4) Under Feed menu, select Manage Feeds. In this box, it'll show 1 entry.

5) Delete this entry in Manage Feeds. Click the Feed menu. 1 is gone, but 1 'phantom' entry is still there and not shown in Manage Feeds.

6) Close Opera. Check the Feed. The 'phantom' feed still there.

7) Try to do an update on this 'phantom' feed entry. It'll crash Opera!

8) Uninstalled Opera, cleaned registry, deleted folders (Program Files and Profile folders), etc.

9) Reinstall Opera again. The 'phantom' feed still there and crashes Opera again!

Ralf Brinkmann 12. June 2008, 15:03

The context menu of a download window opened by key (on the keyboard) still does not work. With the right mouse button it's ok.

it is true that this release was a bit rushed,
however it's still a stable release (maybe not rock solid but stable nonetheless).
and I would definitely say that there are more sites compatible with 9.5 then there are with 9.27.

try it out, you can always go back to 9.27...

Acid 2 still matters. As said, it only works when keeping all settings at default, and not scrolling or zooming afterwards etc.

I need old-style windows native skin. Any chance to get that?

EricJH 12. June 2008, 15:46

Congratulations on the release. :hat: :headbang:

Dan-Raoul 12. June 2008, 15:47

Wow. Used over 2 hours to get in here. 50* all teh way =P THANKS, Opera! Haven't noticed any bugs for the two last hours ^^ but the panels-buttons got small :< In Meguiddo =/

johnnysaucepn 12. June 2008, 15:50

@cybpsychdsync, can't confirm, I only get prompted once.

Take the opportunity to upgrade - some people have complained about particular sites having problems, but there are probably less than have complained in the past about sites failing in 9.27! There's always going to be incompatibilities when things get fixed.

You can always install a separate clean copy, and upgrade when you're comfortable.

Tim Altman 12. June 2008, 15:59

@grogge: http://snapshot.opera.com/faq#when-snapshot

@chivitli: Yes, when using the native skin on Windows XP with the Classic XP theme, there's low contrast between the tabs. We'll try to improve that for a future release.

@Werdel: Give it a try and decide for yourself if the upgrade is right for you.

Marcin 12. June 2008, 16:07

Is there any QT4-based build or just I can't find any??

Timberlad 12. June 2008, 16:11

Thanks and nice work on this new release. Twelve pizzas??? Why didn't you call? I could have helped out with those.

Cheers

FataL 12. June 2008, 16:11

Is there a Classic installer?

bmd 12. June 2008, 16:13

Congratulations! Been wainting for this for a long time!

I don't wish to spoil the party, but if you try to log in to Google Analytics the tab stays displays "Loading" in the login box and opens a popup warning that, when clicked, actually opens Analytics.

Win XP SP3, fresh install.

My Status Bar is disabled and the toooltips aren't showing  This is annoying because I'd put a lot of things on the Navigation Bar so that the Status Bar could be turned off; worked OK in 9.27.

underman 12. June 2008, 16:15

Congrats boys !!

Finally you made a new skin, maybe this will make me come back from the windows native appearance^^

2 things though:
- big cosmetic bug here: when adding the "new tab" button
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/8849/12012488mw9.png

- upgrading from opera 9.2x: the amazon.com search box now always redirects me to amazon.fr =(
This is freaking annoying as hell!! (even though i got english as preferred language for web page). How do i change that please?

Oleg 12. June 2008, 16:15

It's great. Opera opens even faster now. Thanks, guys!

ei4ia 12. June 2008, 16:17

how to detach/attach tabs now?! dragging tab on desktop opens whole new opera - not just intab loaded window as before (9.27). that's very bad - i do use this function a lot, even when 'detach' option was gone from right-click-on-tab menue.

The YeOK 12. June 2008, 16:20

Well done Opera team, I've been following the beta's for a while now. 9.5 has come a long way, a super browser. I have to say, I love the new default skin!

Peter 12. June 2008, 16:21

I must say that I'm impressed with Kestrel - it's so fast!

Once I'd sorted out the 9.2 keyboard compatibility (don't know why logical things were changed - many apps. use F5 for Refresh)), pasted in a few things such as SpeedDial opening new tabs and images opening in IrfanView (why does a new installation over-write these?) it's going well.

Thank you for the best browser by a mile.

a couple issues:

- with every new install of Opera, the install directory input field somehow remembers the previous directory

- my opera6.adr file (from another instllation) was automatically copied to the new profile folder
this was NOT an 'update', but an install into a unique directory
all past versions are installed in their own separate uniquely named directories
I typically append the "build #" of each installation to the directory name
does Opera now check for other installed versions and automatically copy the file over?
