Opera Desktop Team

A New Snapshot and My First Post Here

, , ,

Hello, my name is Øyvind and this is my first post here since I joined the Opera's Desktop Team less than two months ago. It has been a busy time for me, but at the same time, I think it was the perfect time for me to join. I have already witnessed the release of 9.52, and we are getting close to releasing 9.6.

Before I started, I was just a MyOpera member roaming the #weekly IRC channel. Fridays were always a highlight. That's when I got the answer to all my questions. Did someone fix my bugs? Were there any new features enabled? When is the next version due? Now when I am on the inside I get to know all this information every day I go to work. And the best of all, I can now fix bugs myself, as well as play and contribute new functionality for the next release. So now I get to have fun every day. What more can I ask for?

Today we have formally EV-enabled Verisign and Comodo in Opera v9.5 and later, which you can read more about in Yngve's blog post. So go and try out our new snapshot, and have a lovely weekend.

Crashed in GMail within 2 minutes, when I tried to refresh in my inbox when it got stuck with "Loading..." displayed at the top.
Reported many builds ago, no responses, no fix :down:

wirusek 12. September 2008, 16:09

Thanks for the new build :cheers:

sebt 12. September 2008, 16:12

New mail behaviour allowing to download full mail body ("This message is incomplete but can be fetched the next time you check and receive mail") seems to be broken when "Leave messags on server" is checked.

Even if I click Fetch Complete Message, the above banner remains with "This message will be fetched the next time you check and receive mail" displayed in the mail body, with the "Fetch" button greyed. Then, clicking Check/Send, the original "This message is incomplete but can be fetched the next time you check and receive mail" reappears, with the button pressable again (ie. not greyed out).

This cycle seems to be unbreakable while "Leave messages on server" is checked.

Should I file a bug report or is this known?

Seb :smile:

Where the hell are the QT4 .deb builds??

BTW, thanks for the latest weekly, and I hope you'll have great time with Opera software dude. :D

flitz 12. September 2008, 16:15

Linux GCC4 QT4 .deb not ready yet. ;-(

tsarhan 12. September 2008, 16:15

I see in this build you've enlarged a search field (the right of the address bar), it's really cool, but I want to have ability to set it's size manually. Ico-pics (favicons) of sites doesn't loads in this search field.

Junyor 12. September 2008, 16:21

@Exolon: Bug number?

@sebt: Yes, please.

Exolon 12. September 2008, 16:23

@Junyor: 360259

Someone else asked whether this is on a clean install - it's not... so I might delete my profile and try again if it's the case that old profiles can cause problems.

Please fix the 100% CPU freeze while opening a new window #343143. I can't search the history because of this and if I do I have to restart the browser. That's really annoying.

HeeZy 12. September 2008, 16:43

sync is still broken for me.

piroxicam 12. September 2008, 16:50

No multilanguage setup? I've installed and my Opera browser was in English after the installation.

You are our last hope! :D
Congrats!

VJgamer 12. September 2008, 18:19

Is this just my install, can someone please confirm or disprove.

On the last two builds, on google maps (maps.google.com) after I have searched for a place, clicking on any of the links that pop-up on the map ( To here - From here - Search nearby) brings me to a blank (white) page with javascript:void(0) in the address bar.

I'm thinking I just need to do a fresh install.

MrBlueSky 12. September 2008, 18:27

A great first post Noteme! Keep up the good work. :up:

Thanks.

Sweet. Thanks a lot for that transfers bug fix. Still won't install this one though, will wait for dragonfly fix :smile:

davidviolin 12. September 2008, 18:48

Ï have to say that with the previous 9.6 beta 1, I was very happy to see that the filesize had actually SHRUNK, however with this release its back to normal again. Too bad, as most applications just add features, the filesize increases and not enough is done to clean up old code. One of the reasons utorrent is so popular is that its about 250 KB and yet it has a LOT of features. Maybe Opera could learn something from that?
Otherwise, the CNN videos still wont display fullscreen, hugoboss,com still doesnt work, and there are many pages that have formatting problems.
Also, I would love to see Opera reach 100% on acid tests, and then using this as a sales argument in advertising campaigns. Yes, Opera, like firefox needs advertising. This will boost the useage, and then again, more web developers are going to write their pages optimized for Opera.

olli 12. September 2008, 19:07

FataL: What do you mean? You given up on the rest of us?

olli 12. September 2008, 19:12

cranil7: We are working on it :-)

Stifu 12. September 2008, 19:15

davidviolin: yeah, disk space is a real issue nowadays... Not.

It's wrong to draw conclusions just from the size of a file. To exaggerate things, you could imagine Opera itself is extremely small, but calls one or two external libraries that boost the file size by a few MB. Would that make Opera any less optimized, or its code less clean? Not really.
As long as your browser doesn't become Photoshop like, there are other things you should worry about.

lamarca 12. September 2008, 19:28

thanks for the new snapshot.

Maybe he did, hehehe. At least there's a new hope, because some old Opera interface bugs seem to be forgotten a long time ago. I'm reporting some of these bugs here since 9.5 first snapshot, and nothing until now... :|

Get javascript:void(0) when using http://maps.yahoo.com/

After trying typing in the addresses to get directions click on the round trip button and you get javascript:void(0)

VJgamer 12. September 2008, 20:28

@excastis

That is exactly what it is doing on Google Maps. I wonder if they are related. I can confirm your issue on Yahoo! Maps.

SteelRealm 12. September 2008, 20:48

I don't have issue with Google Maps =\

dom0410 12. September 2008, 20:52

I've got another javascript:void(0) problem -

On http://www.microsoft.com/en/gb/ clicking on any of the links underneath "Microsoft UK Site Guide" brings up javascript:void(0) instead of a box with various content. Can anyone confirm this is happening?

Also, where are all the languages?! I want British English not American English!! :cry:

Build 10427 Windows XP SP3

zikzakatak 12. September 2008, 21:03
