Opera Link duplicates

, ,

Yesterday, our Opera Link server monitors noticed an increase in the server load on our Link server farm. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be because of increased traffic of items being added and synchronized, an increase far higher than expected from a new release alone. Our Opera Link server team soon realized that this was triggered by a bug in the 9.60 desktop browser and we went to work trying to identify the bug.
I'm happy to say that we managed to reproduce the bug and our Opera Link server team implemented a workaround on the server that is now live and seems to be running fine.
The users that were affected should no longer see this problem and duplicate bookmarks that got generated should all be gone.

This is also a good place to remind people that we do have a way to remove duplicate bookmarks for all to use. Go to the Opera Link web interface, then use the "Remove my duplicates..." link that is located on the left side.

Great, I'll restart Opera. In work Opera usually runs for weeks until the X server crashes or a new kernel is released :-)

Tamil Friday, October 10, 2008 12:17:33 PM

Thanks for quick fix.

mkomkoo Friday, October 10, 2008 12:20:25 PM

Great. Not what Opera Link needs a better web management interface. Like delete all.

origPumu Friday, October 10, 2008 12:21:08 PM

Thx for fixing this.
BTW, I love this new feedpreview! smile

It's really good news.Thanks.

PeaceDestroyer Friday, October 10, 2008 12:39:18 PM

Finally a fix to this issue, it was annoying indeed.

Thanks, Opera team! yes

How about making an intermediate page that shows what changes will be made when you click "Remove my duplicates..." ?

There could also be an option to select what changes you want made (checkboxes next to every change)

Un Allegro Lupacchiotto Rossoualr Friday, October 10, 2008 12:43:06 PM

ehm... the bug is still there... my bookmarks are locally and remotely duplicating again sad

skeeter Friday, October 10, 2008 12:45:10 PM

It didn't work for me. Theres still alot of duplicates and I get a

"401 Authorization Required
You do not have the required credentials to view this page."

when clicking on opera link after logging in.

Svoboda Friday, October 10, 2008 12:46:27 PM

The whole Opera Link thing works somewhat strangely for me. First, as of 9.5 it created duplicates and then more duplicates and when I had all bookmarks like 8 times I stopped the synchronization. Now I tried it again - and it seems to have created some buplicates and it also seemed to discard some of my setting - I am speaking about bookmarks nicknames. They simply disappeared. I am wondering what happens when I coma home and turn the link on on my second computer too. I hope I am not doing something wrong.

Paul SkinnerPaulSkinner Friday, October 10, 2008 1:16:18 PM

I was experiencing exactly what Svoboda said yesterday and was getting quite pissed off. I'll try again today and see what happens.

PawelPawelko Friday, October 10, 2008 1:17:52 PM

Thank you, I got big mess with bookmarks with this bug.

calex71 Friday, October 10, 2008 1:18:15 PM

id also like to be able to see what links it is removing

Teal_One Friday, October 10, 2008 1:23:23 PM

Not fixed here. Something is still wrong with that. After I moved some Bookmarks (which were not in a folder =? they were in the root directory) into a folder, every sync moves the bookmarks back and/or creates duplicates in the root directory.

Is a restart of Opera requiered to fix the problem?

Rijk Friday, October 10, 2008 1:24:22 PM

Personally, I'd just make a backup of the bookmarks first before trying the 'remove duplicates' feature. Instead of poring over the changes the server will do if you don't trust it, it might would be quicker to remove the duplicates manually... smile

JuliusDigital_Outcast Friday, October 10, 2008 1:26:29 PM

I'd get duplicated notes since before 9.60 went final. And had to leave notes out of the sync. Will this fix that issue?

pincopallino Friday, October 10, 2008 2:02:37 PM

Do you have any idea why my speed dial does not synchronize? The local one has nine links, the remote one zero.

EricJH Friday, October 10, 2008 2:06:47 PM

Noticed it. Thx for fixing it.wizard

z@h3kZAHEK Friday, October 10, 2008 2:08:41 PM

oh my god.ıt does't work now and all bookmarks are double now.sad

Jakob Henrikssonb0kaj Friday, October 10, 2008 2:28:29 PM

There are still plenty of duplicates here... what can I do about it?

Luchio Friday, October 10, 2008 2:58:25 PM

Quicker? I don't think so... There's no way to select many bookmarks and choose delete. Heck, there's no way to just delete a single bookmark in one step, you have to click "Edit" first, and then "Delete". I went through that and it was a very long and painful process...

Bartek GarbiakLukinPl Friday, October 10, 2008 3:11:30 PM

Actually duplicates attacked me when I removed the duplicated bookmarks via Link site irked

Charles SchlossChas4 Friday, October 10, 2008 3:48:56 PM

LukinPl how did they attack you?

Rijk Friday, October 10, 2008 3:51:12 PM

@Luchio: I meant, quicker than first studying a list of changes in the My Opera Link pages, as some people asked for here.

bobwonderful Friday, October 10, 2008 4:04:18 PM

Still not working.. Many duplicates. What changed between 9.52 and 9.6? or was it the link server??

yanek Friday, October 10, 2008 4:09:15 PM

Good to know of possibility to remove duplicates from the web side, but from the beginning of Opera Link I have never managed to login successfully to the link.opera.com still the same error message:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /yanek/account/link/.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

Apache Server at my.opera.com Port 80

My two operas at home and work synchronize correctly.

StelianLZ2SDC Friday, October 10, 2008 4:49:54 PM

Go to the the Opera Link web interface, then use the "Remove my duplicates..." link that is located on the left side.

Thanks Petter!up
I'm rarely enter the Opera Link Web Interface, the removal of Duplicates Links adres is very useful. I have before doing it manually. Sometimes these Bookmarks, after a bad synchronization server were not in a folder, a beyond all folders (although I placed them there) Reporting is this a problem? He was not connected with duplicates of Bookmarks.

When we can expect synchronization of passwords or even emissions?

I noticed that the synchronization of searchings in Opera 9.60, their image-icons do not move (all new searchings, have "magnifying glass") Error is this in Opera 9.60?

Thank you! But whether this option to eliminate duplicates, it would be good to be embedded in the Opera Browser? smile

Sorry I don't see how going thru 100 "edit"->"delete"->"edit"->"delete" cycles on link.opera.com would be quicker than reviewing a list of 100 items... Maybe I misunderstand your point.

Bartek GarbiakLukinPl Friday, October 10, 2008 7:03:53 PM

@Chas4 - 9.6 didn't cause any troubles for me but I've clicked on 'delete th duplicates' anyway. Just in case... And then the duplicates started appearing, together with a lot of blank bookmarks (no text, no url, default icon) and something what looked like an opera default bookmarks (or maybe it was something from recycler bin). When I disabled synchronization most of my bookmarks were gone... I restored them from a bin, enabled the synchronization and the issue seemed to be solved. Unfortunately on my other desktop situation repeats and it is even worse - more and more clones are spawning every time the synchronization is done sad I can't stop it... Good news is that disabling synchronization does not remove bookmarks on this installation.

kevinarjun Friday, October 10, 2008 7:20:18 PM

good job...

Rijk Friday, October 10, 2008 7:40:52 PM

@Luchio: yes, you are still missing my point smile I was talking about deleting duplicates (which are most often duplicated folders) in the normal browser UI. The My Opera UI is indeed not so quick yet...

@LukinPl: disable synchronization in all your browsers, and delete the file link_queue_myopera.dat from your profile while Opera is closed.

termoactiv Friday, October 10, 2008 9:01:15 PM

@Rijk:sry but these doesn't work. The links are still multiplying.

Antije Friday, October 10, 2008 9:23:50 PM

Congrats on the release Opera team!

Hey, does anyone know if it's possible to quickly add tabs to a different session without opening that session, opening the tab, then saving the session, closing the session, then re-opening the session you were originally in?

I find myself not using sessions as much as I'd like because they are only full of "old" stuff and I don't want to shelve my new tabs while looking at the old.

Of course--it doesn't need to be said that the auto-save of sessions is probably the coolest browser feature to date for packrats like me--you couldn't pry it from my cold, dead hands. I definitely use and love that aspect of sessions.

GuilhermeSpyMan Saturday, October 11, 2008 12:27:37 AM

Yesterday I removed manually the duplicates after a clean install of 9.60. Today I saw this post and tried the "Remove Duplicates" thing, just to check if there was any leftover...

Well, that's what happened AFTER the "Remove Duplicates":

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Any hints?

ToeBee Saturday, October 11, 2008 2:06:09 AM

Yeah... pretty sure this bug remains unsquished. Now it seems to be happening even after I turned off sync on my laptop. Maybe it is just the sync server lagging behind or something. Guess I'll keep deleting duplicates and see when it stops. Also I should add that some bookmarks seem to be getting duplicated from subfolders into the root folder. Quite annoying really sad

Edit: it seems I forgot to shut down my browser at work so thats where the duplicates were coming from. But as far as I can see, the bug does still exist.

and
other people of good will!

Teach me, how to insert pictures in messages here.
img /img (of course with "[" and "]") doesn't work.

Write down necessary codes, please.

kingcharles Saturday, October 11, 2008 10:23:25 AM

This is still not fixed I think.
My bookmarks are duplicating like rabbits!

Svoboda Saturday, October 11, 2008 10:53:56 AM

To be honest, this has been happening to me ever since this feature was introduced in 9.5. Hence I can't see how anyone could ever be able to use it anyway.
My notes.adr is around 500 KB but after sync it grew up to 2,3 MB and every sync hangs the browser for few seconds so I had to disable the sync in order not to freak out and throw the whole thing out of my window.scared

Svoboda Saturday, October 11, 2008 11:16:58 AM

I don't want to be too clever, but I thought it can't be a matter of more than mere comparision of the bookmarks (notes etc.) attributes like description, name, nick, url and date. If there is any difference (date is of course a bit special) at all, give it to me. Otherwise I already have it so keep it. But I guess there is something more behind this, is it?

We are working thru the weekend to resolve the remaining issues which is causing dupes to appear for some people. Unfortunately, what we fixed on Thursday did not fully solve the issue.

Edgar P. NashNetegrof Saturday, October 11, 2008 1:52:02 PM

I have not this problem, but if Opera Team discover a bug well I ´m happy because will fix, Thanks.

EricJH Saturday, October 11, 2008 2:08:29 PM

Not suffering from it anymore; tons of kudos for sacrificing your weekend...

KoenDeVreeze Saturday, October 11, 2008 3:22:36 PM

I have also duplicate search entries

pincopallino Saturday, October 11, 2008 5:49:47 PM

OK, I have first synchronized my PC at work, then the one at home. I got plenty of duplicate bookmarks, and the "remove" procedure doesn't work at all. I had to clean up my bookmarks by hand. Besides, as said above, the speed dial does not synchronize, it's empty on remote. This new service is a really great idea but it seems at beta at most, it's far from trustable!

Rijk Saturday, October 11, 2008 8:52:32 PM

The bug was introduced in RC2. But instead of downgrading, it might be easier to disable synching until a fixed build is released. And/or don't use this build to remove bookmarks from the trash bin or to drag bookmarks around.

Teal_One Saturday, October 11, 2008 10:34:58 PM

@mitchman2

Fine, tell us when the bug should be fixed so that we can test it again.
