Opera Desktop Team

Snapshot build with preview of the *new* Skin

For those who'd like a sneaky-peek at the development of the new Opera 10 skin for Windows and Mac, this is the snapshot build for you!

Things to bear in mind while you're playing with this:
  • What you see here is neither complete nor final, and there will be more iterations before the final release. Some elements will still look like the current skin!
  • Currently the skin is implemented for the default setup, tabs at the top, panels on the left, panel toolbar on the left and status bar at the bottom. Other setups will look a bit odd - for now.
  • This build doesn't include the new features in Opera 10, so one of the reasons for the revised skin isn't there. All we be clear when the beta comes out!

A more descriptive post about the thinking behind the new skin, and why we're changing it will follow with the beta. For now, give it time to 'settle down' and see what you think!

Please post your skin feedback in this forum thread.

Screenshot
We have also hit another issue no other browser has run into (yet!). By reaching the version number 10 we have noticed several high-profile sites and frameworks breaking because of wrong browser sniffing. Opera 10 gets (erroneously!) detected as... Opera 1. We have modified the UA string to read

Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.00

(or similar - depending on your platform). The "real" version is added at the end of the string. We will publish a more detailed explanation of this soon. Please let us know if you come across some web sites that break now because of this change!

Update:
We have published today an article that details the UA string change. Make sure to read it.

  • There are several issues with the skin: Speed Dial is unfinished, there are missing/outdated icons, some things may be placeholders/work in progress, and so on

LOL
Thats certainly something either FX or IE (Considering its long dev cycle) wouldn't experience soon.

btw, you could have included a screenshot with the post. I really want to see how it looks. Dload will take 2 more mins to complete.

@bfg10k Right click the icon, and go to configure.

Daryl Joseph Ducharmedarylducharme Wednesday, May 27, 2009 2:27:22 PM

Looks great. Just noting that there is still a bug ( at list in the Windows version XP/Vista ) that links from other programs don't work when Opera is closed.

Still, I'm loving all the Opera 10 newness.

incastea Wednesday, May 27, 2009 2:32:04 PM

Smooth as always has been. The new skin is cool (and bluish) and has a refined look. But I'd rather have the tab close buttons on the top-right corner of the tabs. It's somehow easier for me to use them when I have a lot of tabs open. BTW, it's good to see to have the versioning glitch solved (even if its a temporary solution). It has caused much headache for me recently. Thanks again for the new build! Excited about getting my hands on the first beta! cheers

BleedingHeart Wednesday, May 27, 2009 2:32:06 PM

I take it the skin is to try and keep consistency between platforms while fitting in on each?

So far it feels and looks like a cross between vista/7/kde without looking good in any, the last one looked pretty good in vista.

New icons seem very, retro?

No biggie I'll just change it and plenty will like it.

I think changing the wand to a key is a bad idea unless your renaming the feature.

The context menu in compose looks good, the ? in the adress bar is a good idea.

Pallab DeIndyan Wednesday, May 27, 2009 2:32:29 PM

Using it..the new buttons are much much better
the contrast issue with tab bar has been taken care of.
All in all it is definitely an improvement.

bfg10k Wednesday, May 27, 2009 2:34:52 PM

@NoteMe Under configure there's only an option to notify about network speed (already unchecked). I'm on a Mac, I don't know if this is the problem...thx anyway smile

Give us a new icon soon wink

Øyvind ØstlundNoteMe Wednesday, May 27, 2009 2:47:36 PM

@bfg10k

Sorry, I misunderstood. You can't turn that one off. We'll see if we can do something about that before the final. No promises though wink

Got it via Auto-Update - seems to work great now.
Except for a little thing:
Could you please display a messagebox before starting the installer.
Something like:
--------
Opera downloaded an update.
Would you like to install now?
Yes || Install Later
-------

It gives me everytime a thrill when i start opera and an unexpected installer starts up.yikes
The second thought is that there is not always time (especially at work) to wait for the update installer.wait

EDIT:
OK. One autoupdate-bug left.
The installer won't uninstall the previous version (correctly).

My Speed Dial has a white background, looks terrible. A friend's Speed Dial is dark gray however. Can I change the color?

Daviddavidviolin Wednesday, May 27, 2009 3:03:25 PM

I like the new skin, however, I would love to see a layout that takes up less space on my screen. There is a lot of screenspace wasted, that would be very useful on netbooks for instance. I hate to say this, but since version 7, IE has had a very space saving layout. Maybe there could be a "netbook option" implemented?

One more thing... Update the O icon!!! Its not 1998 anymore.

Harlekin Mondharlekinmond Wednesday, May 27, 2009 3:05:05 PM

The skin is really beautiful, thank you very much for this build yes

Khorino Wednesday, May 27, 2009 3:06:58 PM

Just two things I didn't like:

- PErsonal bar favorites take more space than the older skin.

- The icon for sites that don't have one was better with the star.

Rafał MiłeckiZajec Wednesday, May 27, 2009 3:07:02 PM

++MLx;

Qt 4.0 was released on June 28, 2005. Now we have Qt 4.5 and 2009 if I have to remind you. And what? Still on qt4 build for x86_64 Linux. Great.

I actually did, but I wondered because a friend's Speed Dial is dark gray (what it should actually be, I think).

Looks nice, but I had to recreate all my filters in M2. I use IMAP and after the install all filters had no emails and going to properties and reapplying the filters did not work. Everything went back to normal when I removed the filters and recreated them.

In Linux (Ubuntu 9.04, using QT4 build) the menus (both Main menu and context menus) look and act like X11 native menus! The previous build's menus were fine.

I dislike the heart icons used for bookmarks in the panel, especially on the personal bar as place holders when no icon is available (and here I especially hate the colors used)

Seems that this new skin still uses too much vertical space for the tool bars

agree the new tab icon is a bit over powering

some of the new icons (received, outbox) are really slick
