Opera Desktop Team

Snapshot build with preview of the *new* Skin

For those who'd like a sneaky-peek at the development of the new Opera 10 skin for Windows and Mac, this is the snapshot build for you!

Things to bear in mind while you're playing with this:
  • What you see here is neither complete nor final, and there will be more iterations before the final release. Some elements will still look like the current skin!
  • Currently the skin is implemented for the default setup, tabs at the top, panels on the left, panel toolbar on the left and status bar at the bottom. Other setups will look a bit odd - for now.
  • This build doesn't include the new features in Opera 10, so one of the reasons for the revised skin isn't there. All we be clear when the beta comes out!

A more descriptive post about the thinking behind the new skin, and why we're changing it will follow with the beta. For now, give it time to 'settle down' and see what you think!

Please post your skin feedback in this forum thread.

Screenshot
We have also hit another issue no other browser has run into (yet!). By reaching the version number 10 we have noticed several high-profile sites and frameworks breaking because of wrong browser sniffing. Opera 10 gets (erroneously!) detected as... Opera 1. We have modified the UA string to read

Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.00

(or similar - depending on your platform). The "real" version is added at the end of the string. We will publish a more detailed explanation of this soon. Please let us know if you come across some web sites that break now because of this change!

Update:
We have published today an article that details the UA string change. Make sure to read it.

In Linux (Ubuntu 9.04, using QT4 build) the menus (both Main menu and context menus) look and act like X11 native menus! The previous build's menus were fine.

Both confirmed.

Heinrich Witt 27. May 2009, 15:23

Whats about an 64bit QT4-build?
I cant use that 64bit Qt3-build anymore.

Charles Schloss 27. May 2009, 15:25

ouzoWTF did you scroll to the right, notice how long the scrollable area is

Bill P 27. May 2009, 15:28

@HeinzDo why can't you "use that 64bit Qt3-build anymore"?

zikzakatak 27. May 2009, 15:33

downloading 321

Heinrich Witt 27. May 2009, 15:34

because perhaps it gives no more qt3 here?

Dane 27. May 2009, 15:35

We have modified the UA string to read: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.00

What happened to "biting the bullet"?

Wont this hack give you more trouble in the long run and further fragment various types of browser sniffing?

The current problems are already bad enough.
Look at Chrome's user agent for instance.

Phred 27. May 2009, 15:43

I've always like extra long changelogs. Thanks for listening folks. I hope the community likes the skin.

Blaz Pristy 27. May 2009, 15:45

Love you Opera...you must faster than this guy :o:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MeiwLLZjDo&feature=channel

And polished out the plus button...it looks like swiss flag.

Skully 27. May 2009, 15:45

Yes, on Ubuntu 9.04 and qt4 shared built the menu look like x11 ones.
Further does it list qt version 4.2.2 as installed version but it should be 4.5. Might be the reason for those ugly menus.

Charles 27. May 2009, 15:45

I wish I were more thrilled by the new design. I'll stick to the native Windows theme that ships with Opera

lsj13 27. May 2009, 15:47

Uhh.. I will be straight with you. I dislike it. The nav buttons, and the new tab button is horrible.. the windows native has too much color for me.. the heart for the bookmark is so cute.. for a girl. The small icons in the mail sections are moderated and clear-out. That was just my opinion.

FataL 27. May 2009, 15:49

[DSK-246447] Can't install Opera with a limited account

Now I can install (and most likely upgrade) MSI
But I still getting messages at the end of Classic installation :frown:

FataL 27. May 2009, 15:53

Use "?" as a shortcut (instead of, e.g., "g") in the URL field to search with the default search engine

This is nice, but can you also parse "?keyword" (without space between)?

sorry, thought it was meant in vertical way. horizontal I didnt notice. so I can confirm now.

Phred 27. May 2009, 15:55

@staff: Is it of any possibility that Opera 10 could be completely rebranded down to 9.8? It seems worthwhile unless the features that we don't know about warrant a jump to version 10. Just throwing that out there... sure i'm not the first one.

ouzoWTF 27. May 2009, 15:59

I still have my problem with some not showing unicode chars :frown:
If somebody has an idea, please post here

pixpusher 27. May 2009, 16:04

nice... looks like you will move the tabs ontop of the titlebar like chrome and safari 4

Ben Tudball 27. May 2009, 16:06

I like how the tabs actually look like tabs now. The active tab really separates well with shadows over other inactive tabs.

For the sake of being universal, please keep in mind that the standard icon for bookmarks is a gold star. Opera doesn't call them "Favorites", where the heart would fit nicely. The heart icon does look nice, though.

Really like the new download icon. More intuitive. It even shows an indicator in the panel tab when a download has completed. It is a red dot, but I think it would be nicer to have the down arrow with a red outline.

The file download state icons were needed. Thanks for these.

Don't like the Show Images / Cached Images / No Images icons. The Camera icon was much better.

The wand icon is a key. The key is more intuitive for this feature, but "Wand" just doesn't suit a key icon. This feature should probably be renamed "Password Wand" or something proper.

The Reload icon needs to be green again. The Stop icon needs to be red again.

Thanks for this preview. So far, more positive than negative. I look forward to seeing how the skin progresses in the coming snapshots.

Blacker47 27. May 2009, 16:12

Please don't make the same errors as IE and don't play dirty games with version at user-agent string.

Жарко Христовски (Zarko Hristovski) 27. May 2009, 16:16

now all you need to do is remove the window title and menu bar
looking forward to next skin version,
cheers

Charles Schloss 27. May 2009, 16:17

possible crash when creating an album on facebook crashed Opera

Zotlan 27. May 2009, 16:21

Skin doesn't look bad but it's still too damn thick. I want to look at web-pages, not toolbars.

Joey Wagh 27. May 2009, 16:21

many of the trailer pages on apple.com/trailers don't seem to load for me (like http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/pressurecooker/ )

EDIT: Now it is working for me... weird.

Ahmed Ghanem 27. May 2009, 16:25

Looks nice to me, but certainly not complete as you stated, speed dial has serious illness :D

anyway I think I don't like the bookmarks icon, maybe it can be a REAL book bookmark, just twisted so that it fits in space, it'd be awesome.

I get a whiff of Opera X Beta coming soon!

Ben Tudball 27. May 2009, 16:27

UI inconsistencies. (Not skin related)

Turbo context menu: Configure Opera Turbo ... (Remove space before the dots)

Mail > Low-bandwidth mode (Should be Low-Bandwidth Mode)

Tools > Quick Preferences > Open Pop-ups in Background (Should be Pop-Ups)

Tool tip for New Tab button shows "New tab (Ctrl+T)" (Should be Tab)

Blaz Pristy 27. May 2009, 16:28

Joey Wagh
Do you have Quicktime on...you must then click trailer button twice.

Yeni Setiawan 27. May 2009, 16:35

Since Opera using Qt and I see many improvements on their feature, then Opera should enhance more feature as well.

Godspeed!

schouwerwou 27. May 2009, 16:35

Hmm, version 10 getting detected 1. Where did we see that again? http://orcmid.com/blog/2008/12/wtf-adobe-flash-version-1x-crisis.asp

WOFall 27. May 2009, 16:36

The list of mail (eg. in rec'd) no longer alternates colour with every second item, but is instead white. And the emoticons are much worse than the previous ones...

ZeGa 27. May 2009, 16:38

Oh yes, It's very nice!!

Charles Schloss 27. May 2009, 16:43

Wajo357 if try to remvoe the ) at the end of the url, if that is not it try disabling blocked content on apple.com

Ricardo 27. May 2009, 16:44

Installer does not uninstall previous build automatically.
Vista+SP2

MartinezZ 27. May 2009, 16:58

Hmm, I want "back" darker skin, this skin is too "over-colorized". Less colors for everything and, ehm, less hearts on icons, please...

celiochido 27. May 2009, 17:01

gracias por la build :D

M. 'Case' F. 27. May 2009, 17:04

In my eyes, the new skin has the same problem as the old one - you can't easily tell whether the non-active tabs refreshed/reloaded or not, the white text label colour (idle tab) is too similar to the light blue text label colour (refreshed tab). I would at least reverse those colours, so that you can easily see which tab has refreshed - the white text at least stands out a bit more so you can easily see that "something happened on this tab". But ideally, I'd like to see the refreshed tab stand out even more - slightly brighter background, different label text colour (light yellow? light orange?), something like that.
Also I don't think that the heart icon for bookmarks is intuitive enough - I think that the five point star has become "the norm" for bookmarks across apps and platforms and it's not always good to change things just to be different.

Other than that it looks good from what I've seen so far.

It would be nice to just pass single words to search engine just like any other phrase consisting of 2 or more words...

Michael Thompson 27. May 2009, 17:07

I really like the new skin! Thanks for the build.

Yeh, would be good to be able to just type a word and have it do default search and put a letter before for other searches.

It's a bit sad about the 9.8 thing. I only had trouble with one website on that basis (http://www.trin.cam.ac.uk/) and they changed it once I emailed them. Hopefully it can one-day graduate to 10...

New skin looks nice.

Joey Wagh 27. May 2009, 17:12

apple trailers now work for me... weird. Before they just didn't load the page at all.

Hypezor 27. May 2009, 17:14

Concerning the skin, it looks pretty nice, and even works on Unix! :D

Zoli 27. May 2009, 17:15

hmmm..where did the viking arrow disappear from adding a new tab? It looks nice however

silas.lenz 27. May 2009, 17:16

10.00 Beta (stands in opera:about)?
Is it already an beta?
And no i don't like the new theme (especially not the heart icons, and the menus in the previous builds was much better).
The tabs have an better form now but the old color were better...
And where can i download it?

I remember that it's possible if you check/uncheck something in opera:config...

withme 27. May 2009, 17:25

This new skin is just amazing.

Yamaneko 27. May 2009, 17:27

Quite ugly skin, but luckily there is alternatives
Still cannot use multiple profiles simultaneously :frown:

Matheus 27. May 2009, 17:30

Much better than the 9.5 skin! But I think the buttons could be less separated.
Also the add tab button is a bit odd. Maybe just a plus sign without the background (like the panel button) will look better.
Finally, the status and menu bar is much larger than necessary.

Tri M. Nguyen 27. May 2009, 17:32

I still got the flash scrolling issue that was fixed last week (DSK-252561). Get's it when watching videos on http://www.adressa.no/tv/ or playing flash games on Facebook etc. Haven't tried other places. Youtube works great tho.
