More Than Beta 2

, , , ,

Hi, I'm Manuela and I'm yet another first-time poster. And I'm a Desktop UI developer by the bye smile

I was mostly working on Opera Unite the last couple of months, so it's nice to see it being public now, getting real-life feedback on it. Currently, we are making an effort to polish the feature. We are ironing out some smaller UI glitches, and are making Opera Unite even more usable.

In this build, you'll find everything that Opera 10.00 beta 2 has, plus Opera Unite. Due to remaining issues with the Opera Unite infrastructure, it has been decided that Unite isn't quite ready for beta yet. But don't worry, we're working hard to fix it smile

The crash logger has been improved and now works on Mac.
Important: Mac users, if you have submitted crash logs using the crash logger in previous builds, please re-submit them. We changed the format of the log, and old logs cannot be parsed.

Enjoy the snapshot!

Highlights:
  • Jon Hicks has been working hard polishing the new skin
  • The error pages are now less red wink
  • Plus many many more fixes...

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

For some reason I'm not seeing this blog post on the main Desktop Team blog page - I got here by entering the URL of this post directly into the address bar. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Can anyone please make some screenshots for me (especially from the less red error pages)?

I can't download the new Build until evening because I'm at work right now.

Thanks a lot in advance!

zoquete Thursday, July 16, 2009 9:51:33 AM

HellbillyDeluxe, it looks horrible even without red. Only the headline is in read, it is gray.

No translations this time? I can only find the English locales and not the Dutch one (or whatever language, the locales folder only contains the "en" folder)

And I don't think the new error pages are to bad, but the problem with the not appearing image (footer) remains.

zoquete Thursday, July 16, 2009 10:17:26 AM

error page screenshot

footer image loads very long, then it appears

solcroft Thursday, July 16, 2009 10:19:22 AM

Just a quick comment regarding the skin.

I'm not sure if this exists in previous builds, but I just noticed it a while ago. On the active tab, if you mouseover the Close button, the right border of the button appears awfully close to the right edge of the tab.

Might look a bit better of a few extra pixels were added in between.

a) On opera:* pages keyboard shortcut for Zoom is not working.

b) Compare error page in 9.6 and new one. New one have too dark background and its harder to read.

c) If you click link like this: link to #comment notice how Opera hangs on last couple of elements like 88/93. Consequence is that it doesn't take you to expected position in document.

d) Opera Chat: When you go offline, wrong status sign (Online) stays next to server name (forum topic).

e) Is 'Full screen' button icon still old style?

f) http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=gravitation - drop down menus like 'Calculate' is not shown correctly on hover (maybe it's same problem that was fixed on Youtube via browser.js?)

[System: Intel, WinXP_sp3, Opera10b_1643]

zoquete Thursday, July 16, 2009 10:23:55 AM

solcroft, the problem is that the background gray area of the button is too large. The same in addressbar.

zoquete Thursday, July 16, 2009 10:27:44 AM

http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/ works again after Hall announced it. smile

This is a general problem, it also occurs when you open a normal page without navigating to an anchor. For example, this blog page is for me still "loading" while I'm typing this (66/67), a refresh most of the time solves this problem, or, if you want to navigate to the anchor, just hit enter in the address bar.

I can confirm this behaviour. It seems that active tab couple pixels smaller than non-active tab but still close-button -element is in the same place.

My personal showstoppers in Opera 10
  • Why i can't combine the options 'Allow window with no tabs' and 'Start with Speed Dial'
  • Unknown Content-Type will not open the Open/Save dialog (Citrix: application/x-ica)
  • Can't open old web software which needs IE6 form opera, because there is no entry in the dialog (Win2k, IE6)
  • No option to set the VPS directory to another location
  • All favicons are in one directory. They should be separated in single sub-folder like bookmarked, personal, visited, temporary,...

I know, this error-page is not that important, but may something like his would look a way better:

The Opera crash reporter creates a second Opera icon on the OS X Dock. When letting it start Opera automatically again after the crash. The two icons remains on the Dock. I just played around and got THREE Opera icons on the dock bigsmile

Hi All!
On site: http://www.torrentsmd.com/, Opera crashes when trying to save the torrent file!

1) Go to http://www.torrentsmd.com/
2) Choose any torrent and push it.
3) In the window that appears, choose: Download With => Opera => Open = Crash!!!

Can you fix the space problem when thumbnails in tabs are disabled ?

thumbnails in tabs disabled, buttons are too near from tabs:

thumbnails in tabs enabled :

Except that, is perfect, final release will be awesome.

Hewi Thursday, July 16, 2009 11:05:40 AM

Tardio, Too near? What? I think it's better in that way. Actually i would take some pixels away from below buttons aswell.

This happened to me on occasion but with this build seems to be behaving a little better.

Still no auto population of email address in the creash reporder

Still getting the crash on start up issue if you have Show start up screen and click a link in an external application

Still getting football365.com crashes. I did submit lots of crash reports with the previous build.

You would like us to resubmit the crash reports, How?

Also what about times when crash reporter doesn't kick in?

Christos Lazaridischrislaz Thursday, July 16, 2009 11:11:57 AM

Great build, thanks!

+1 for the new error page

I have a problem assigning a shortcut to toggle the Tab thumbnail view. I tried assigning "F5 shift" (and other combinations) to "Toggle Tab Thumbnails" with no luck. Am I doing something wrong?

I like the colour adjustments to Opera Turbo states.

UI inconsistency: Opera Turbo button does not have a green background when click (hold) down on it.

Dennis TardioTardio Thursday, July 16, 2009 11:22:41 AM

There is also an option to sort by name folders in bookmarks.
We can ONLY sort by name ALL folders and files, an option to sort by name only one folder by a right click on it and choose "sort by name", like in Firefox.
I need this option ! smile

addressbar is slimmer in native skin and looks better so. Pleas make the same height of it in standard skin.

Tabbar-height looks huge in native skin.

Ben Ryvesbenryves Thursday, July 16, 2009 11:33:32 AM

Looking great, but I'm still hoping for a reliable way to remove the menu drop-down button when menus are hidden. You can comment it out from [Pagebar Head.content] in ui\standard_toolbar.ini and then remove it by right-click, Reset toolbar to defaults, but it keeps adding itself at odd moments (lock/unlock workstation, drag tab, drag image on page, toggle menu).

Yep, seems to be because it is being served as Content-Type: binary/octet-stream rather than image/jpeg or similar. Firefox and Safari also prompt to download; I guess IE makes a guess based on the extension.

So do you think this is an opera bug that require a fix or something that can't be fixed
