Tab thumbnails on the sides and Opera Unite improvements

Another snapshot and yet another new poster :hat: Today's snapshot contains, amongst other things, changes to the tab thumbnail feature, you can now place tab thumbnails on the sides as well :D

Opera Unite has also undergone some changes, optimizations of the Unite infrastructure and replacement of the "unite://" protocol with "http://admin." being the highlights. We would appreciate if you play with Opera Unite as much as possible, so we can gather some more real-life feedback.

Note that due to changes in Opera Unite, the new Unite infrastructure will not work with older builds.

Enjoy the snapshot!

Highlights

  • Tab thumbnails can now be placed on the sides
  • Optimizations to the Unite infrastructure
  • Replacing the "unite://" protocol with "http://admin."
  • The Unite button on the status bar now shows available Unite users on the local network

Known Issues

  • Unite "http://admin." addresses are not forwarded to the user's Unite domain
  • The new Unite infrastructure will not work with builds from before the previous snapshot
  • [DSK-260153] "Computer name is in use" dialog appears twice when taking over Unite computer name
  • No automatic updates this time around

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Props to gandhi2 for his first blog post, though I think his avatar is a bit too tranquil.

hogehogehoge 31. July 2009, 13:55

ruario 31. July 2009, 13:56

Hi shoulda had another avatar ready. I fact I think he does have another avatar usually but he must have put it on ice.

svein 31. July 2009, 13:57

No regular avatar? Or is he just out of avatars?

ruario 31. July 2009, 13:58

He has other avatars. Indeed I think he has a tractor trailer load of avatars to choose between.

Congrats on the blog post gandhi2

How must I do that?

Tab thumbnails can now be placed on the sides

Nice job :D

netwolf 31. July 2009, 14:03

Thanks for the new build!

But please tell me, is there a way to get rid of this ugly red circle in the upper right corner of every single (unread) tab?
It's already annoying me after 2 minutes...

Robert90 31. July 2009, 14:03

The recent snapshot link at the side aren't updated, first had the old one :frown: Luckily the new one is already ready to install

Edit:
Already fixed I see

+1000 I also do not like in on the mail panel icon the dot or on the trashcan when a pop-up is blocked.

Right Click>Tab Bar Placement

belthur 31. July 2009, 14:07

Wow...thanks

lucideer 31. July 2009, 14:07

Hrmmm... I see no thumbnails in tabs on the side.

- Tried all skins
- Checked all three places that "Enable" is checked (context menu, Appearance dialogue, Advanced settings>Tabs)
- I see thumbnails fine on top and bottom.
- I see the resize-grabber vertically along the tab-bar at the side.
- Grabbing it allows me to resize the width of the tabs, but they are just small text-height tabs.

What am I missing?

Other than that, everything LOOKS very nice. The toolbars for the new-tab and closed-tabs buttons integrate very nicely on the side.

Bug with menu-button being irremovable is still present though.

Robert90 31. July 2009, 14:09

This build still crashes when I close an undocked dragonfly window. Qt4 32 bit (openSUSE 11.1 with Qt 4.5.2) Reported a while ago as: DSK-259412

Zotlan 31. July 2009, 14:09

Ah the thumbnail bar thing now completely disappears, excellent!

DanielHendrycks 31. July 2009, 14:13

I kinda dislike the line, I liked it when it blended with the address bar.

Other then that awesome job, I was afraid this tab thumbnail placement wouldn't be done for years.

svein 31. July 2009, 14:14

lucideer: You have too many tabs, they collapse at a certain point. Open a new window with only a few and you'll see the thumbs.

CodeDuck 31. July 2009, 14:15

Excellent. Now the normally wasted space (a ton of websites use fixed width) can be used for the nice state-of-the-art tabs and some more of the precious vertical space can by the websites.

Only suggestion: When using the thumbs on the side, place the "Add new tab" button on the top and not on the bottom. Its not a problem to move them by yourself, but it looks a bit odd on the default configuration.

snf 31. July 2009, 14:18

Number of this build please ?

Wade 31. July 2009, 14:18

at the moment i am using build 4502 in ubuntu 9.04 32bit and again when trying option 'check for updates' it informs 'you are using the latest version of opera', i have selected 'Download All Snapshots' in opera:config but it has never ever worked!

edit: just noticed "No automatic updates this time around" but there has never been automatic updates for linux builds...

hope this will be fixed before final build!

Read the known issues, they are not there just to fill up some space: No automatic updates this time around

Probably just because it's Friday and the employees also have a weekend to celebrate. (this has been explained a long time ago in the post of a new snapshot)

Edit:

Originally posted by Wade:

If memory serves me right they also mentioned this, for linux there will never be automatic updates, only a notify that there is an update, because of all the package managers etc. they want you to use your system package manager and they're not gonna build some automatic update mechanism for linux

fearphage 31. July 2009, 14:22

Again, a very strong changelog. Thanks ladies and gents!

One question, where do you install the new OperaUnite services (on HDD)?

- Sorry for my bad english...

On Linux automatic updates are provided differently. You need to add our Debian repository deb.opera.com. Also we are not providing auto updates on that repository for snapshot builds on Linux right now. Just Betas and when the release version comes out.

Unite is part of the regular installation, all you have to do is turn it on. New services are installed simply by clicking on them.

Somehow I doubt that's it as I have 3 tabs open in the current window. And only 1 in one of the others!!!

I've tried restarting the browser to no avail. Also noticed NUMEROUS bugs related to the new side tab bars, which I'll enumerate, report and post here later.

Thanks for the confirmation, hope it will get fixed soon because it is a really annoying bug because I use dragonfly a lot last days and my screen is to small to leave it docked. Now I have to dock it again before closing, which is just annoying.

snf 31. July 2009, 14:32

@DanielHendrycks.
Thanks !

theadolescent 31. July 2009, 14:36

That "tab on the side" feature is great for widescreens. A reason to use Opera on its own. Thanks!

Cjcr 31. July 2009, 14:37

hi,

I'm need for edit new services (icons and other things) (not for pre-installed unite services)...

¿Any idea?

To see tab preview on the side, revert the original UI layout (Ctrl+F12, Advanced, Toolbars, Opera Standard, then OK) and customize it again for yourself. It worked for me.

I love the great idea of unread-tab-indicator. Looks very nice and coooooooool. :D thanks Team!

Thanks cousin. Did the trick for me.

Actually, just changing toolbar setup, and then changing back to my customised setup worked.
